I saw this Ken, but dismissed it as either a CH-53 or Merlin. I never even considered it to be a Mi-26?
Blimey Lee, it was only a few years ago you were asking me advice about photography! Looks like you no longer need it – great shots!
Although I only live ten minutes away, after 20 years I stopped going to the Moth Rally a couple of years back when the enforced changes spoilt the atmosphere for me. Reducing it still further to a single day seems to beg the question of just how much longer it will continue?
Blimey, you must put your foot down – 8 miles in 10 minutes?? 😉
Frank Sinatra – “Come Fly with Me” – TWA Super Connie
I was lucky enough to see this fly at RAF Gaydon’s ‘At Home’ day on 17th September 1966. It flew fairly slowly with smoke emitting from its flaps to show the ‘blown flaps’ and landed in rather a STOL manner. It was built in 1963 and was operated by RAE Bedford for low speed handling trials for a while then in 1969 was flown out to the USA inside a Belfast for trials with NASA at Moffett Field. It was returned to Bedford in 1970 but was never flown again and was offered to Cosford in April 1974.
…I’ll bet that caused Havoc?
For an aircraft ‘on long term rebuild’ it seems to be coming along quite nicely with the fuselage and wings repainted. Here is another view of it at Ronaldsway, now with the engines offered up for attachment. Also I found a shot of it as it looked stored at Redhill in 1960, being silver with a ‘coloured’ cheatline.
Now are all you Auster guys going to bring your aircraft to Henstridge on 26th? I hope to be there in anticipation of seeing the Auster Crofton, Chrislea Skyjeep and Aeronca.
And that looks like a scan from a magazine, my shots were published by FlyPast.
Anybody who has the issue from mid to late 1996 featuring the accident can probably tell if its the same shot.
Not that I’m particularly bothered, but it would be nice to have a credit on the site.
Moggy
Miserable sod Moggy – a ‘credit’ for using a photo in a forum? Mine was published in AIR International – please scan and use it on any forum you wish!As long as it’s not being used commercially, I don’t mind! 😮
Nice tribute Les – well done! Hoping all three will be outside at Kemble on 10th September for us mortals to pay homage to!
Great shots Rob, thanks for posting them! The Auster J-1A Crofton was a great surprise!! Do you know where it is based? Re the BA ‘Sparrow’, I think you mean ‘Swallow’? Loved this posting as we rarely get aerial shots like this in a lovely rural setting.
Oh dear, this looks ominous!!The mounds are encroaching on the VC-10 and the One-Eleven has been ‘speyed’!! 😮
just for 2 hours per day.
Whilst it’s a start, opening the Grahame-White Factory for just 2 hours a day
…WHICH ‘two hours’?
This is tremendous Rob. Where did you get the ‘Red Tops’ from? Are they genuine or mocked up? A nice pair of steps placed strategically would ensure a queue of photographers eager to capture those stencils on top of the engine! Well done!
