“I just hate having to kick-start these things. Bad as my old Matchless!”

    Any takers?

For what? Has the moderator done the dirty on the photo?

My most memorable air shows are those that have included something extra other than just single aircraft displays. The Farnborough Air Shows between 1958-64 were absolutely magic with massed flypasts! The 50th Anniversary of Military Aviation Show at Upavon in June 1962 with every type in service in massed flypasts and the 38 Group attack with Beverleys, Belvederes, Whirlwinds operating in and out with troops and parachutists, whilst Hunters of No.1 Squadron beat up the airfield. (why don’t they do that today with current equipment?). Yeovilton Air Days between 1966-70 with airfield attacks and massed flypasts with Sea Vixens, Buccaneers,Hunters, Sea Venoms and Gannets…oh the sounds and sights never to be repeated!
The RAF’s 50th Anniversary display at Abingdon in June 1968, which had an incredible historic static park, but a rather poor flying display as I recall.
Of course the first IAT Greenham Common show in 1973 was superb with types and Air Forces not seen before – and all in perfect weather! Then there was the Queen’s Jubilee Review of the RAF at Finningley in July 1977. Wonderful shows, all these.Alas, whilst the best stick in my memory, so do the worst. Biggin Hill Air Fair 1967 where there was a combination of thick fog, thunder-and-lightning and non-stop torrential rain ALL day!. I stepped back to try and photograph a USAF C-124 Globemaster, only to watch it disappear in the fog! And yes, I also witnessed Hoof Proudfoot crash the P-38 Lightning at Duxford and the TFC P-63 King Cobra dive into the ground in an equally horrific ball of fire at Biggin Hill!

“West Wycombe is a private airodrome near High Wycombe, not far from West London”

    Ah, you mean Booker!

Alias Wycombe Air Park, but not ‘West’ Wycombe!

What about F5 Tigers? The Swiss use theirs to great effect, why not the Snowies!!

One slight problem – the CAF don’t operate F-5 Tigers and as the type is now out of production, they are not going to buy some second-hand just for the team! 😮

Digital, pah! Wash your mouth out Albert. Never!

Yes, like you, I am a dyed-in-the-wool slide shooter but times are a changing! First the Kodak processing lab. in Hemel Hempstead closes and all films have now got to be sent to Switzerland for processing! Guess what, that lab. closes in September and all Kodachrome will be processed in the USA. How much longer will you continue to buy these films and post them to the States? I think they’re trying to tell us something? 🙁

Rob, Are you going to repaint the 890 Squadron badge on the tail or change it for 766 Squadron as in the photo I posted earlier? Another thing, can the wings be manually folded and unfolded, or do you have to have all the hydraulic systems functioning for that to happen?

Aren’t the current Hawk fleet leased aircraft? If so, they could not use these aircraft unless the CAF bought them outright or bought a new batch.

Wow, how much work you have put into this? This is looking fantastic and if you hadn’t posted those photos, many people would not appreciate all this hard work. I wish other museums would look after their aircraft like this

We’ve had the conversation before John! I switched from b/w to slides in 1966 and gave up b/w then. Now trying to convince myself that after 40 years of shooting slides, digital is the way to go, but I’ve got mixed feelings.
Oh boy, a CD with your slides scanned on them would sell like a bomb! I am also scanning my slides, but it’s a daunting and tedious task! 🙁

Ah, a famous ‘RJG action shot’. Delighted to see any of these in Air Pictorial during the ’60s….now if only it was in colour!!

Perhaps it is time to consider putting stands all along display lines, to which everyone has the opportunity for a seat during the display.

I don’t think it would be so expensive, certainly the entrance fee would be better justified. Everyone gets a seat, and you have the choice of height or proximity to the fence.

They had a stand at Culdrose last year, and I was very happy to use it. I got a great view, was very comfortable, and nobody could block my view – even though I was 4 or 5 rows back. I’ll certainly use it again this year, if I can.

    Rob,

Do you really think they would do that and not charge extra for the priviledge? You would think that the price of the entrance fee would justify being allowed close enough to the aircraft to get decent photos, but ‘NO’ they charge an additional £4 for the privilege of standing a bit closer, having to use a telephoto lens for some aircraft and for photographing photographers with hi-viz jackets on, wandering about behind the aircraft! 😡

Yes, there was the RAF Chinook demo. Here are some more from Yeovilton. The French Navy Alouette was special (as was one of its crew!)as it is the only one fitted with a Super Frelon’s radar nose for training.

Weather in the west is not good either, strong winds, low cloud and showers.
All this is blowing east towards Duxford, but if the wind keeps up at least it may break up the cloud.
