Do you know what actually happened, i heard the afterburners just lit up and pistons started flying all over where the Sea Vixen was parked in the static display. As I was leaving i saw the Navy picking the pistons off the floor!
I was stood by the Sea Vixen when this happened and didn’t see any ‘pistons’ flying about, as I ran to the fence. The only ‘pistons’ I saw flying were BBMF and the Yaks! 😉
Didn’t realise Legends was a month ago today?
Could be one of the last chances to see BBMF Spitfire AB910 in this desert camouflage. I am told it will be repainted at the end of the season in a RAF Polish Squadron scheme, I believe?
Having watched it again I still stick by the ones that come towards you and bank awayto left or right are Yellow and the team was formed at RAF Valley in 1964 with 9 Gnats painted yellow for high visability. Serial Nos XR540, WR 986 XR 987 and XR 991 to 96.
I counted 8 aircraft so can’t be reds then. 😀 😀 😀
Brian
Sorry Brian, but the Yellowjacks were ALLOCATED nine Gnats, but only ever flew with FIVE of them, as the reliability of the type had not been tested and they thought they would need the spares. I think you’ll find this is 1965 – the first season for the Red Arrows, who flew 7 aircraft for the first two seasons, but always took along a spare, so that could account for the 8th Gnat.
Indeed the last season the “Red Pelicans” flew all-dayglo Jet Provosts was 1964, but the aircraft were still around in 1965 painted overall dayglo. Think you’ll find the “Patrouille de France” were at that show also, with Fouga Magisters.
York is outside, but Lanc is in the hanger.
Will the York remain outside during Legends….please?
Dissapointed that the aerostars are performing, they just don’t do it for me.
Sorry, totally disagree! I think they are extremely professional and exciting to watch and they just don’t do enough shows! Seeing a team of Yaks in the air together is not something you see every day!
…so, if it’s going to cool off a bit by the weekend, will Duxford be ‘the last of the phew’!! 😎
Not quite Rob. Its when your mate who is upwind of you tells you his head is getting wet…thats a forecast you can trust.
The situation that you describe is being caught out! 😀
No, that means the pidgeon has missed you!! 😉
Another line of contact is Julian Temple, Director of the Brooklands Museum.
I have just read this and I am deeply shocked. Paul and I go back a looong way and met when we were both in the RAF at Eastern Radar at Watton in 1981. We lived opposite eachother and I helped him set up Warbirds Worldwide. This is so sudden and so sad, I just can’t believe it!
Well, obviously mostly filmed in South Africa and nice to see a Basler Turbo DC-3, An-32 and others, but not much of the Air Atlantique DC-6?
Look, if you have an issue about the Saudi flag, then come and visit our museum and speak to the Manager or Chairman of the Board of Trustee’s about it and vioce your opinions to them face to face and see what response you get. I’m sure you’ll be to busy to do that though 😡
Err, ahem! DONE THAT and have just relayed the response! 😡 If we are discussing the authenticity of repaints, then these matters should be aired. The Meteor, Canberra and Hunter restorations are superb and a great credit to you and Malc., but it’s a shame the collection is spoilt by these anomalies and people are interested to know the reasons behind them!!!
I shall reserve judgement until it’s finished, but it does beg the question of how practical is it to have aircraft strung up high at these angles? How will they get at them to clean them?
Auster IIIs are pretty rare and we can’t afford to lose any of the small handful in the UK. Therefore it was sad to see G-ATAX exported to Australia in 1979. Here she is at Sywell in July 1976 painted red and at Sywell the following year in military guise as NJ916. Talking of Australia, here also is VH-BCG in RAAF colours as A11-40 at Canberra in March 1986. Have you got the Sword model kit of an Auster III, Rob?
If anyone took any Kodachrome slides of these aircraft, particularly the York, Anson and Lancaster, please could they kindly PM me?
