Here is an AWA b/w photo plus my two slides of her leased to Air Anglia in Dec 1975 at East Midlands and in March 1980, back in ABC titles.

Thanks very much Rob. Great to see her receiving attention. Checked my archives and have photos in original AWA scheme, then in Air Bridge Carriers and leased to Air Anglia for a short period before joining Elan. This one never saw service with BEA as they used G-AOZZ, ‘PRM and ‘PRN before replacing them with the three Series 222s, G-ASXM,’N and ‘O.

Thought you might like to see a shot of XW635 just after she had her military markings applied and was named “Spirit of Butlins”, taken at Cambridge in March 1970.

    😮 😮 😮 Oh my god!!!!!!! I don’t believe it!! 😮

I have never seen these before! Where on earth did you get those from? I can,t say how greatful I am for these, espacially the flying shot of her over Hatfield 😀 These are the first real 100% definate shots of 685!

Brilliant. Thanks very much…………got any more 😀 😀

..where did I get them from…I TOOK THEM!!! The shot in 766 Squadron colours is at Yeovilton Air Day on 6th Sept.1969 and the air-to-air shot was taken on 9th June 1970 out of an HS-125 with rescue hatch window removed over Hatfield! I did warn you I have shots of several MAM aircraft when in service, as I started taking slides in 1966. Regret don’t have XN685 in 890 Sqn. markings and assume it joined 890 at Yeovilton around ’71-’72 after the Martel trials.

Okay, well you already have my photo of Canberra WF922 which I sent to LesB. Here is your Sea Vixen, XN685, firstly when with 766 Squadron coded 716 at Yeovilton on 6th Sept.1969. Then an air-to-air shot over Hatfield the following year when it was used by HSA for Martel missile trials.

Superb! Incredible that so many MAM aircraft are being worked on all at the same time. The museum is very lucky to have the resources to do this. Meanwhile there are other types rotting away outside museums that are long overdue for attention! Thanks for letting us see the pics and look forward to updates as-and-when. Have photos of nearly all your aircraft when they were in service, so will be interesting to compare.

The Argosy is being worked on at the minute and we started re-painting her this year.

We did look at other colours, but it has been decided to keep her in the Elan makings she carries now. It’s a big airframe and it will take a while to bring her up to scratch. The props have already been referbished and the engine cowls are next on the agender. I will take some photo’s tomorrow if I remember and start a thread on the project. 😉

Great stuff!! I had heard that it was hoped to put her back into her original AWA livery, but I guess it’s easier to repaint markings that are already there?

Thanks for the news about the Meteor. If you do as good job as the Canberra and Hunter, you will make many people very pleased! Can’t wait to see it finished and come up and take some piccies! I have to admire how MAM constantly give attention to each aircraft outside when it needs a repaint. Now when is someone going to start on the Argosy? Would be lovely in BEA livery or the original Sir W.G.Armstrong-Whitworth scheme?

There is a bit on the News page of the website commenting about the return of the ‘Fish. Hopefully the rest of the wing sections for LS326 will have been delivered to Yeovilton by the end of the summer, so she may POSSIBLY be flying by the end of the year.

That’s by no means a certainty though. Keep checking back on the website for updates.

Surely with all this work on LS326 being done, she must be be due for a new paint scheme, as she has been in that same scheme since 1987! Any news Lee?

Yes, a new cowling is in the process of being fitted.

Where did the spare cowling come from?

Great stuff Septic! I can’t believe how good she looks, considering this aircraft was vandalised with graffiti a few years ago! What a shame the same TLC can’t go into the other Vulcans preserved outside? There must be constant work on her condition, most weekends I guess?
