Cracked it!
Finally got the shot I have been wanting – side view of the Valiant in full sun with no fences, no cars, no cones, no concrete blocks, no people TODAY! Hooray! Fingers crossed that the weather forecast was right, I made the marathon trip to Cosford to see how everything looks. For me, the new Cold War building is very impressive and imaginative. At the moment, the whole area is H&S gone mad, as no one is allowed anywhere near the building and even the Valiant was shot over a fence. You certainly can’t walk around it unless you are working there. The F-111 is outside and will go inside with the Valiant next week, so this weekend could be the last chance you’ll get to see them outside. The Viscount still has just its engines off and the Trident and 707 have completely disappeared. The VC-10 and 1-11 are still completely untouched. The museum staff told me that the areas where the airliners once stood will be occupied by a RAF Hercules, VC-10 tanker and a Nimrod, that are expected to fly in to Cosford on retirement…now there’s news!
Glad it helped VB, I’d like a copy of Airline also…still waiting to find a copy of Buccaneer, must be someone out there with these on VHS…anyone???
yeah, got loads of Buccaneer DVDs 😀 😀 😀
David is right. And 70K for a Bristol Freighter – wow yes please. Would it ever fly in the UK though?
It stands a much greater chance of being kept flying in the UK that the Vulcan does for lots of reasons, not least that the type has been certificated on the UK register by the CAA ever since the prototype flew, unlike the Vulcan which has NEVER flown as a civilian aircraft.Cost of maintaining two Bristol Hercules pistons must be just a tad less than four RR Conways, not to mention the insurance cover. If I could afford it, I would put my money on the Freighter as being a better bet!
Actually going to be a Yellowjacks Gnat 😀
..but Ray was never in the Yellowjacks 🙁
Will she also be at Biggin Hill at the weekend?
Martin,
I’m delighted Cosford have not forgotten the Britannia there and really hope they get her inside. However, as I have said in earlier posts, I am all for aircraft being restored in the actual colours they actually flew in and not a ‘representative scheme’ that the type wore. Therefore I would like to see G-AOVF repainted correctly in its BOAC livery (not with huge ‘speedbird’ logo across its tail and tiny tail reggie, as now!) or even British Eagle, as a figurehead of ‘British airline travel’ and not to portray ‘XL638’.
Oh very nice! I see even the Hungarian Li-2 turned up! 🙂
Air Atlantique Historic Flight all going + DC-6. Tribute to Ray Hanna should see a Red Arrows Gnat in formation with the current team. Biggin always turns out something different, so expect a surprise! One of the themes is Vintage Airliners.
One for me too please! I thought you were going to oblige Albert…??? 😉
When I have been available, the weather hasn’t co-operated! It’s only now just improving!
The Dragonfly would then become wholly irrelevant in an RAFM context, and be up for disposal…
Bruce
No more irrelevant than the Dutch Navy Neptune and Danish Catalina, which both wear their correct and authentic markings, yet there are no plans to dispose of these, so why not put the Dragonfly in its correct colours?
Just another thought, if the BA collection is been wound up what is going to hapen to these two?
If it was up to me, I would return these two to their authentic and original colours – the Dragonfly to a dark grey & duck-egg green Royal Navy scheme (as it never was G-AJOV) and the Ju-52 (err, CASA 352) to Spanish Air Force colours, as it never wore anything else in service and hope they won’t be tempted to paint it in Luftwaffe colours, as all the rest have ended up!
I’ll be going over to Cosford tomorrow morning, hopefully the Valiant will still be outside, anyone want any pics getting of anything?
a Kodachrome SLIDE of the Valiant would be nice!
1980?
More like 1978 as that was when Hanover Street was made and the Mitchells ended up being parked at Blackbushe after the filming alongside the Ju-52s. The ex-Moroccan T-28s arrived in September that year, but not sure how long they stayed. The Mitchells certainly weren’t still there in 1980.
Pretty obvious it’s return to the UK has NOT been secured. Highest bidder to date is a Canadian. As far as I know they’ve already got TWO of them preserved.
Super shots Mark – nice lighting conditions for landing!
