I think the Irish Air Corps WILL reform “The Swallows” with PC-9s, as I have spoken to some of their pilots, who advised me they have been practising team manoeuvres in anticiption of this, but IAC HQ don’t want to be pressed into announcing anything official just yet.

Re the Canadian “Snowbirds”,I feel pretty sure they will re-equip with Hawks.
The type has been proven in CAF service and within the RAF Red Arrows, but whether they have enough leased aircraft to justify specific allocation, or whether a new order is required is unknown. If they have enough leased aircraft, then surely the obvious answer would be to purchase them outright?

4 x PC-9M’s now form the new IAC display team (as yet not officially named, though rumour has it that the name ‘Silver Swallows’ may be retained).

I thought this was going to happen, but last week I received a letter from IAC Public Relations stating ‘they have no plans to reform an aerobatic team with PC-9s in the foreseeable future’ πŸ™

Dayglo is a type of orange isnt it? Thats my excuse anyway. You quite blatantly posted red so ner!!! :diablo:

No, ‘dayglo’ is not ‘a type of orange’. Dayglo is light-reflective paint called ‘fluorescent’, which can be any colour – red, orange, green, yellow, blue, but usually only ‘primary’ colours. Have yet to see dayglo purple!
I wondered how long that would take… πŸ™‚

Tell ’em about the dayglo knights and pawns ?

    Bruce
..even better, the ‘ultimate’ dayglo scheme must be the “Red Pelicans” in 1964.
    Sunglasses on guys 😎 😎 😎

What is a “Wyevern”? Would it be similar to a Wyvern by any chance?

eny survivers? Please check your spelling before posting!!!

Probably as close as a ‘Scimatar’ is to a ‘Scimitar’ :dev2:

I must admit, I hadn’t noticed….and I’m a stickler for accuracy and authenticity! If you feel strongly about it, why not drop a line to RNHF at Yeovilton? They may be only too pleased to put it right.

PS… Does anybody know a good supplier of Dayglo paint, we might be considering a…… well… a project!

    Watch this space πŸ˜‰

Halfords & B&Q have loads of spray cans of it! Make sure it’s ‘fire orange’ though?

Albert, if we are talking about dayglo paint, and even the adhesive strips, you are way out on this one. I started making notes in 1960 and recorded Vampires and a Provost at the Battle of Britain display that year with orange dayglo. First T.7 I saw with dayglo strips was a 229 OCU aircraft in August 1961. I saw the Balliols/Sea Balliols at St Athan on a ‘drive by’ so was unable to make notes, but it was definitely April 1962.

Sorry about the Hunter with red strips!

Yes you’re right about dayglo PAINT on RAF aircraft, but didn’t think the paper strips came in until around 1964 and am very surprised to see a GREY Hunter as early as 1962.

Though the RN do give a degree of financial support, it certainly isn’t on the same scale as the BBMF.

Swordfish LS326 hasn’t flown for several years now, and W5856’s last season was in 2003. Both aircraft have been grounded since then due to suspected corrosion in the wing main spars. Work has concentrated on LS326, which has been completely re-wired in the meantime, and the engine currently fitted to W5856 will be fitted to LS326 later this year when the wings have been returned from Brough where they have been completely refurbished thanks to BAES. W5856’s wings will follow suit.

More details on the Flight can be found at the website.

    Hi Lee,

With all this work on LS326, will it emerge in a new paint scheme?

Without having done too much research to back up the claim I’m about to make, it seems to me that Mr Walton is laughing all the way to the back! He spent 10 years+ banging on to us about how he wants to see it fly, realises that he cant make it happen so he sells it, to the country and then charges us Β£400,000 for the pleasure of keeping it in his hangar. That sounds absolutely outrageous! If I’ve got the wrong end of the stick there, then please accept my apologies, but on the face of it, that’s how it looks to me! I say pack it all up, put in a few boxes and bring it here to Scampton!

    Sorry, rant over!

Don’t apologise VX927, you’re absolutely right! There have been too many threads on this subject and we all know what the outcome will be, but there is no one willing to admit defeat!

Mine was Farnborough 1958. We were coming back from holiday in Bournemouth and my Dad casually said ‘ I think the Farnborough Air Show is on today, let’s divert there and have a look’. “Black Arrows” looping 22 Hunters was serious stuff for this young lad in short trousers! Fairey Rotodyne, the ‘Westland circus’, waves of Hunters, Javelins, V-bombers, Canberras etc…..oh there was a serious interest here that couldn’t be ignored….

Great thread if you are Dutch!

Dayglo Dakota: This was how KLM Dakota’s and DC2’s tried to keep their timetable and from being shot down during the phoney war.

NOT dayglo – just plain orange paint….one for the ‘naughty boy corner’ πŸ˜‰

First Domine T1s were certainly silver/dayglo

I think the first three appeared in this scheme, XS709,’710 and ‘711 with ‘712 being the first in the red/white scheme. This is XS709 at Hatfield in February 1965.
