    … and now some RAF.

At St Athan in 1962 (April?) I saw a group of silver/red dayglo Balliols or Sea Balliols, parked at the end of a disused runway. Anyone know what/why/how many and have a photo?

Don’t think these can be as early as 1962, as Hunter T.7s were silver with yellow trainer bands then and and not painted grey & dayglo until around 1965-67. Incidently the first Hunter T.7 doesn’t have ‘dayglo’ panels, just plain red!

Come on Albert, you know you’re itching to show us your photo of the dayglow A&AEE Javelin at Coltishall’s Battle of Britain show.

Oh, I forgot about that one! Thanks for reminding me Steve…..sunglasses on chaps! 😎

I think the Air Show got 3 series as it was originally hosted by Hazel Irvine & another bird whose name i forget but she used to chase Mark Hanna around.

Thanks for that Albert, and yes Wildcat, I have a shot of the Canberra somewhere but it will have to wait until tomorrow.

I think you’ll find that THIS is the Canberra in the background of Cranswick’s Meteor photo. It was T.4 WJ874 which was used by the Fleet Requirements Unit at Hurn in August 1970 when I shot it. It went on to be one the last T.4 in service with the RAF at Marham.

    TIA Mr Cranswick.

A few more whilst looking through my archive.
Given the sheer numbers of aircraft internationally that have sported a dayglo finish this thread could run for some considerable time.

Anyone out there with Canberra T.4 , Meteor T.7 Humter T7 or Vampire T.11 pics ? Oh nearly forgot – JP T3 and 4’s.

51-4419 T-33A at Midland Air Museum.

Sorry Keith, but regret NONE of these have ‘dayglo’ on them! All three have just plain red paint and nothing fluorescent whatsoever! 🙁

Challenge for Albert – Harrier GR1? Only ever seen video of it

Hmm, not sure how extensive the dayglo is on this Harrier you’ve seen, but these are the only two Harriers I’ve shot with dayglo!

The packets you describe sound like the same kind my father used to keep stamps in. Have you tried your local stamp collecting shop, or Stanley Gibbons in the Strand, London? BTW, if you are who I think you are, I used to really admire your action shots of Carvairs and other types published in Air Pictorial througout the ’60s! Myself, I gave up b/w negatives in 1966 when I changed to colour slides and have never regretted it!

    Neil, Colin and all.

Good to meet so many forumites, although I didn’t read this thread in advance and hence missed the gathering at the Pembroke!

Sorry I didn’t get to meet with Albert, nice piccie of the Luton though!! 😀

See you all next year I hope, if not before!!

I didn’t read the forum about the meet by the Pembroke either! Hung around G-ASML to see if said owner returned for ‘duty picnic under wing’, but no sign. Never mind….a minor offence! 😀 Catch you at Keevil maybe?

Oooooooooop’s I stand corrected, Thanks Albert.
So it begs the question, How many variations on the dayglo theme were there?

You are quite correct that black/yellow is the ‘norm’ for target-tug aircraft and indeed the Royal Navy Meteors were initially painted with black/yellow stripes after being converted from NF.11s to TT.20s, but were repainted with the lime green paint in the mid-60s – I don’t know of any other aircraft that had this colour dayglo, so guess they were pretty unique. I have first-hand and intimate knowledge of this colour, having flown in one at 18 years of age!

I took the attached shot of an FRU Meteor TT.20 at Hurn in October 1969. When the prints ‘came back’ I was dismayed the underside colour showed as yellow and black, whereas my eyes had told me the colours were lime green dayglo and black. I assume that the (Kodak) film could not register the true colour. I recently scanned the negative in the hope that the true colour might appear – but no – even with some help from Photoshop.

I’m beginning to doubt my memory now – can someone confirm there were such lime green/black TT-striped machines?

You are quite correct, they were painted dayglo lime green/black stripes underside. Here is one of my shots at Hurn in August 1967. You can see that the attachments holding the target drogue are painted standard golden yellow, compared with that lurid lime green colour underneath. It depends what make of film you used as Agfa was notorious for not depicting ‘dayglo’ correctly, but your shot certainly shows it as ‘lime green dayglo’ and not ‘target-tug yellow as norm.

Dayglo (officially ‘fluorescent red orange’) was first introduced by the U.S. armed forces during the mid-1950s. Some of the early USAF C-130As flew with a mixture of ‘arctic red’ and ‘dayglo’ extremities during 1955-56, so this can be very confusing for model-makers doing research from b/w photos.
Here is an example of a QF-9G Cougar at Point Mugu in May 1964. If you want DAYGLO – this is seriously daygloed!

XP667 RAFC Cranwell based T.Mk.4 heading an impressive line up

Albert, A long shot but any ideas on location/year?

Very interesting! I thought initially this was Cranwell, but they are not all RAF College aircraft. As some are silver/dayglo, some grey/dayglo and a few in the red/white/grey scheme, that would date it as 1969. Grey/dayglo was introduced in 1968 and the red/white scheme in late ’68/early ’69. It’s possible that this IS Cranwell and they had to borrow some serviceable JPs from other Units to make up the massed formation flypasts during the RAF’s 50th Anniversary celebrations in 1968?

Betty arriving at Abingdon for the 1968 RAF Birthday celebrations.
    I assume it’s dayglo on the 748.
    Poor camera = poor quality!

Sorry Peter, NOT dayglo! Slap wrist – against this thread rules! 😮

As the Meteor U.16’s nose is longer than the F.8, I presume they have found an F.8 nose from somewhere? Can anyone confirm this and know from where?
