About a 100 years ago i bought a Walton, black and white super 8 silent film called THE SKYS THE LIMIT, from a boot sale…meaning to have it transferred to video one day but never got around to it. Looks to be in good order, box says ‘GET AIRBORNE-with ace flying club pilots & aerobatic fliers of the RAF’. Crude artwork on box showing Lightnings in formation,Tiger moth? and Magister?….A Rank Organisation Film,
I wonder if its now,or ever was available on Video or Dvd ?
I have this film on DVD. There is a chap selling a combination of these Walton aviation films on E.Bay for ยฃ5.00 each. They are b/w,silent and rather grainy but lots of nostalgia. “The Sky’s the Limit” is mainly RAF aerobatic teams filmed in 1963 with air-to-air footage of the “Red Pelicans” Jet Provosts and “Firebirds” Lightnings plus others.
I shall be there tomorrow and have arranged to meet up with former members of the original 1965-68 Red Arrows. Is anyone else going?
Today at Hendon it sports a yellow cowl http://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/fiat-cr42-falco.htm which if the 60s shots are thought to be original must be inaccurate as the paint on the cowl at Biggin and Chivenor looks to be contemporaneous with the fuselage paint?
I don’t think you can say either are ‘inaccurate’, as both schemes are accurate, just slightly different. Perhaps Hendon wanted to portray a different Unit? I am not an expert in Italian camouflage and markings so cannot say. It was shot down at Orfordness and there are photos of it nose down in the sand, looking very much in these colours but without the ‘BT474’ serial. It was repaired, but not repainted, then stored between 1943 at various stations, ending up at St.Athan in 1968. It was then fully restored and repainted for Hendon during 1973-74.
Very interesting Richard!
Thank you – apologies accepted! ๐ Here’s another shot of it three years later at Chivenor August 1969, still in its ‘original paint’!

Fear not, guys,Neil is OK….I’m just helping him out with the PR/Publicity side of the event.
Many thanks for your support and help in 2005….what could you have up your sleeves for 2006?????????????
Colin
I reckon the Navy should send the blue Sea Harrier?
Whoa !!! Memory Lane ๐ฎ
When I was ten – in 1957 – my old man was posted to Hong Kong (he was in the Army).
I went to Gun Club School until early ’58 – then to St George’s.
For our weekly swimming lessons, we were taken in an old Bedford bus to RAF Kai Tak – to use the pool.
I can still remember seeing the 28 Sqn Venoms lined up as we drove past.
It started my abiding interest in aviation…
At weekends, I used to mooch around Kai Tak – I can remember helping to push an Auster out of a hangar at the Hong Kong Flying Club, ducking behind the wall as the DC-7’s and Connies came in over the road.
They flew right over our flat in Lomond Road……….
I went aboard an RAF Sunderland that came up from Singapore and pestered the US Navy crew of a C-47 (probably an R4D ?) until they showed me around…
Martin Marlins landing in the bay, the new runway being built out to sea – playing amongst the rubble and bulldozers.
You wouldn’t get away with it today – I was out ‘playing’ all day!!!!!
We were in Hong Kong from late 1957 until early 1960 – near Kai Tak, in the New Territories at Sek Kong and finally on the island at Fort Stanley.
IIRC, in 1960 the new runway was opened by John Cunningham in a Comet – and I remember seeing my first Boeing 707 flying over.
I don’t have any photos – just memories…………
Ken
Didn’t know you were THAT old! ๐ฎ
I was in HK with the RAF during 1979-81 and not a lot had changed around the airport! There were still ‘moochers’ there! However there was no longer any RAF presence at Kai tak, only the RHKAAF(including the Spitfire 24 now at Duxford). 28 Squadron was at Sek Kong with Wessex HC.2s and the Army with Scouts – happy days!
Low Strike?
Thought I would chuck this one into the pot- fully rocket-laden Saudi Strikemaster beating up Warton in 1968!
Very rare slide of the RAF Museum’s CR-42 outside in sunshine in original paint at Biggin Hill in September 1966….another gem from the ‘AR’ collection! ๐
Great! Where’s Neil hiding? ๐ Last year I arranged for DH Dragon, G-ECAN, to come. Anything special you would like me to arrange this year?
Indeed the Farnborough clip is from the 1950 show. There are also several more aviation films on this site of interest, including this one of early operations at London Airport in 1949. Great stuff:

Has anyone got any Auster AOP9 photographs that theyโre willing to share with us?โฆ Iโm particularly interested in finding a photo of a Mk9 with the wing mounted camera pod attached, and photographs of XP282 but any pics will be gratefully received!
Many thanks
Ask ‘Albert’….of course! Here is the RAE’s AOP.9 XP277 at Farnborough in March 1969. Not sure what the pod is under the wing, but maybe what you’re looking for….and here is XP282 that I shot at St.Athan in September 1973. Haven’t seen it since and don’t know what happened to it? Hope it didn’t get scrapped! Note that it is devoid of ‘Army’ titles, as it was actually a RAF aircraft – operated by the Forward Control Unit from Odiham along with XR237 and ‘238.
Brilliant shots, always love a Tupolev :).
Where’s the Tupolev?
Some cracking stuff there -wish MAN wasn’t so far away for me! Well done!
Thanks to everyone for their help so far – it is so much appreciated. I think that the intention as to a new colour scheme is to put her back into a RAF one as she will be sharing a hangar full of military Austers, Chipmunks, Cubs, and that Broussard.
Just have to decide to go either for a wartime or postwar one. Decisions….decisions…. ๐
Best wishes,
Martin
Personally, I think there are far too many Tiger Moths restored in their RAF schemes and plenty of examples of pre-WW2 all-yellow, WW2 camouflage and post-war silver with yellow bands. I think there is nothing nicer than a tasteful civilian scheme on a Tiger Moth. This is one of my favourites…
I would put serious money on the Spitfire being SL674 at Biggin Hill and I suspect the Hurricane is likewise.
The roses were that height in 1965. ๐
Mark
Quite agree! Here is Hurricane LF738 (now at Cosford) and Spitfire 16, SL674, at Biggin Hill when I first saw them on 9th March 1971 (roses not yet out!)
