(PS – with this and the shot of G-ALBO at St.Athan, I hope you’ve got a good alarm on your house!!! 😀 😀 )
I’ve already alerted Passport Control before I set the alarm, but the slide of G-AOVD is alongside my Doberman in his kennel 😀
My record shows SOC 31 Jan 73; for fire practice at Farnborough.
I have a photo of her at Farnborough, still perfectly intact in July 1973 minus prop spinners, so guess that was the start of her being dismantled.
Now, as this is turning into a bit of a Boscombe Down/A&AEE thread, who’s going to post a photo of the white and blue MR.3 Shackleton? Still looking for a good slide of this one – anyone help??? 😉
……..Ask ‘Albert’ of course! Here is a mega-rare shot of it at Farnborough on 8th September 1964 before it was repainted in the blue and white scheme and again at Coltishall four years later in the static in September 1968.
Enjoy! 😉
You just answered your own question, non responce from the saudi embassy says it all. We dont make the rules, we just follow em, we enquired, we got an answer. Duxford? who knows, ask them. North Weald? ditto.
MJR
Not at all! No response, indicates they have no feelings either way!!! If they objected, they would say so!!!
We have made equiries into this issue for 53-671 at Gatwick. The responce we got was. We can go ahead and display in Saudi Colours, but are not allowed to display any markings with religeous content, ie Fin flash is fine but the refrences to the Coran cannot be displayed. Hence We have all the original Saudi Warning markings, and are having all but the Coran refrences on the Fin flash. We are going for best of both worlds, one side Saudi Markings and the other in return flight RAF markings. Saudis have softened a fair bit in recent years on this issue. It was a big no no 5-6 years ago, to display any markings at all.
MJR
Let’s get this quite clear…who do these aircraft now belong to, the Saudis, or privately owned? If the aircraft are not going to fly again, they are privately owned and you should be able to paint whatever you want on them?
The MAM Lightning T.55 has not been painted in RSAF markings recently, but has been like this for about 10 years, but devoid of the Saudi flag on the fin, because I am told the Saudi Embassy will not respond to their request to paint it on. Furthermore, if this is such an issue over the Coran, then how come the IWM Saudi Strikemaster is allowed to retail full Saudi markings at Duxford, whilst there is another airworthy one at North Weald also in full RSAF markings. I haven’t heard any objections over those? 🙁
there is a lightning of the saf in the sunderland air museum
in Saudi colours
…with Saudi flag on the tail???
My First Post.
I always thought the Hastings on the Boscombe dump was WD496 (with the long nose probe) it was certainly there in Feb 73, somewhere it read it was taken out of service following a mishap of some sort. TG502 went to StMawgen in late 1972 for fire practice and was gone by 1977. TG500 the third A&AEE Hastings went to Bicester also in late 72 and later the parts turned up at Catterick fire school where it was roasted.
While on the subject of trials Hastings does anyone have a colour pic of TG506 that the RAe used at Farnborough for para work, it had a black lower fuselage and centre section with the outer wings in target tug black and yellow, rest of a/c was standard with dayglo adornment. It was present at the 1960 show.
Jeesus! I’ve never seen ANY photo of TG506 in that scheme and would certainly like to see one also. Where’s Mr.Bond?
Oh, Poo! 😮
Now, please don’t tell me that’s from a slide as I’m still looking for a slide G-ALBO/7708M! at St.Athan. Can you post the whole image?
Here it is, indeed at St.Athan in 1960 (no. the tail’s not chopped on the slide!)
And what about this fuselage – remiss of you not to have a shot! :
…sorry, don’t shoot ‘mock-ups’ 😉
I fully agree with you Martin, this is what I have been trying to tell them all along – this is indeed a very good ‘mock-up’, but ‘NO’ we are going round in circles trying to find some reason why this shouldn’t be! I think we have to admit it’s a very convincing ‘mock up’, but there it is!
To clarify actual production (and I’m sure someone will prove me wrong here!)
By the way, a Britannia was allocated an RAF ‘M’ serial – it being G-ALBO which was given, although never carried, the number 7708M.
….err, ahem!!
whats the scoop on this seafire then? is it a potential flyer??
You are obviously not following this, which has been the subject of an earlier thread. This is Tim Manna’s Seafire from North Weald being sent away to be painted. On its return, it will indeed fly!
Albert
You of all people should know better than to call Brize’s Vicky 10 a mock-up!!! :diablo:
If you recall, that ‘mock-up’ once flew with the RAE from Bedford as XX914…and before that BCAL and BUA as G-ATDJ… :diablo:
If my memory serves me right last time I was at Brize I heard that it’s affectionately known as the ‘VC-5’ due to its now shortened fuselage!
I didn’t call XX914 a mock-up, but was merely quoting from the RAF Brize Norton Station handbook, so assumed they were talking about another one in the Air Movements School section………
handling, and dangerous air cargo procedures are taught to experienced tradesmen, while specialised ADP training courses are available to both Service and MOD civilians. Classroom theory is consolidated through realistic exercises using the extensive practical training facilities
available within the school. These exercises range from a passenger check-in simulator to full size aircraft mock-ups of the VC10, and Hercules C130 K and C130 J. A wide range of equipment and vehicles are also maintained, which can be loaded to the various aircraft mock-ups to reinforce practical skills and techniques.
I would agree with Andy above and stick to my earlier theory that this is indeed a mock-up! The current Air Movements School at Brize Norton has mock-ups of a VC-10, C-130K and C-130J, so why not a Britannia that is now surplus to requirements? As Andy says, compare the details on the original photo with the fuselage of the real thing. It’s very good, but to my eye I’m not convinced it’s real!
I’m sure Robbo or MOTF must have loads of these shots. However, not difficult if you stand back and put a telephoto lens on! The cockpit is the Demon in the RAAF Museum.
Hi,
Nice pics Robbo, thanks for posting. Any shots of the Demons cockpit/gunners position?
…er, that’s Shuttleworth’s HIND Alex!
