A goodly number of great pictures have been posted over the last few days. So a little bit more nostalgia.
I have taken DHFAN’s advice and posted these as jpegs so they should load faster.
1 Noratlass 172 coded 61-NV
2 T-33A 51-4415 coded TR-415 (was in scrapyard at Lasham 09/67)
3 C-141A Starlifter
4 B-66 Destroyer 54-0520 coded BB-520
5 RF-101G Voodoo 54-1455
6 C-54E-15-DO Skymaster 44-9146
If only these were in colour? Guess they are all at USAF bases, but not all at the same place or time? C-141 is possible in New Zealand, as there is a NZNAC C-47 freighter beside it and the C-54D is at Northolt, but not sure as to the others so guess Wethersfield, Bentwaters, Woodbridge or Alconbury perhaps?
Interesting pics again Glyn.
I think the B-66 was the first plastic kit I ever made in, I guess, 1959. I wonder who the manufacturer was.
That would have been Monogram and I think it had a bomb you could drop.
Oh gawd, how many times. SILVER JUBILEE¬!!!!
That’s not clear enough for him…1977
Ian
Was that Chinease stirring or is your english just poor.Yes – another Nimrod – very nice – I just hope this one flies more often than the first one seems too
Mk12
Yes a Seafire in blighty would be cool.

John
John,
I am really looking forward to seeing Skysport’s Hawker Demon flying in formation with the Nimrod and Shuttleworth’s Hind, but whether this will occur at Legends or Old Warden….even at all…remains to be seen.
Albert,
Doesn’t it make you feel ancient to read this thread as “grandad’s photos”? Blimey, by 1975 I had already been photographing aeroplanes for 16 years! I think you started about the same time didn’t you?
I was waiting for that issue to come up! 😮 I took my first b/w aircraft photo of a Starways DC-3 at Heathrow during a school trip in 1960 and started serious colour slide shooting in 1966! THOSE were the good old days, eh Steve? 😉
I have to disagree! The first two shots were definitely taken at the Silver Jubilee as the VC10 XV106 is recorded as static at that show, whereas the 1975 show was attended by XV102. The Tornado fin is without much doubt that of XZ630/P12 which first flew on 14/03/77. You’re probably right about the others though.
Well spotted! I was thinking all the Finningly shots were taken on the same day, but we seem to have two different displays here, 1975 or ’76 and 1977.
My best guess is that these were all taken at Finningley on 20 September 1975, as I think the Diables Rouges Magisters gave their last UK display at Mildenhall in July 76. The NA39 Buccaneer is definately outside the Yeovilton Museum, possibly in March 1969, as it was still being prepared in 1968.
I think the Hunter is a Navy FRADTU (Fleet Requirements and Drogue Towing Unit)
Any other thoughts?
FRADTU is Fleet Requirements & Air Direction Training Unit, after which they dropped the ‘Training’. Interestingly, Sea Vixen XP924 is now the “Red Bull” G-VIXN still flying. The Nimrod is possibly at Yeovilton.
RobAnt,
Sorry, no photos for Finningley 1973. Plenty from shows both earlier and later – typical!
…meanwhile…over to the Historic thread…can’t wait! 😉
My guess is Farnborough SBAC Show 1956
Think you would be spot-on there! G-AOEN wasn’t there in 1957, it was G-AOEO. Incidentally, the ‘Belvedere’ in the background is in fact the Bristol 173.
Last we heard on this Forum was that this Catalina was grounded with engine probems and could not get to Legends at Duxford. Good to see it flying again!
Albert, in answer to your question… a Caribou..Aussie ?
PS..er, no, noticed the large spinner and wider prop blades, plus not so many external hinges , so, probably a Buffalo…….?
PPS..the 20Sdn Pioneer seems to be a lot further North than Singers, as I don`t recall any mountains around there !
First thoughts are right! It is a RAAF Caribou! As for the 20 Sqn. Pioneer, I just guessed that as 20 Sqn. had their Hunters at Tengah, that’s where it should have been based.
It’s called ‘cross-matching’ I think – just rebrand both threads ‘the RAF overseas’?
Laurie,
Thanks for the info. Sorry that this thread and the 1920s and 30s one have got jumbled up, so here are a few more for this one, all taken at Gan by Geoff Mann:
Don’t apologise Steve – that’s my fault! I started posting FEAF shots on this thread, not realising you have started two similar threads. You should combine the two and call it ‘RAF overseas’.
Read the article Albert. All the way to the end… 😉
Yeah, right….what a place to go for a dump 😮
