Heath Row to Drigh Road 1955
A bit earlier that you asked, but I was a passenger on the record-breaking flight LHR to Karachi in 1955. We flew in a L1049G Super Constellation of Pakistan International Airlines and took 17 1/2 hours with one stop at Cairo. A fascinating flight for a schoolboy.

Early crashes
This thread reminded me of a photograph I have of a memorial by the side of the road between Willian and Hitchin. When I originally made enquiries about it it emerged that the aircraft was a Deperdussin 2 seater monoplane which suffered structural failure possibly when a part flew off the rotary engine and severed a flying wire. The two crew were experienced pilots taking part in the 1912 manoeuvres but the literature suggests that at this date there was a monoplane ban in force. . . .
Isaacs Spitfire
I have these photographs from the first Cranfield PFA Rally in the 1970’s. Hope they may be of use.
Pobjoy engines
Pobjoy was an instructor at RAF Cranwell in 1925 and my dad was a “trade lad” there and worked on the drawings and prototype parts for the “Niagara”. I mention this because he said that Pobjoy engines are made from MAGNESIUM castings – please be very careful if you are restoring one!!
ID’s
I don’t have a great deal to offer but RAF Halton had a glider flight and it was housed in a Bessoneau hangar in 1953. They had Sedburgh (T21), Tandem Tutor (T31b) and a Prefect. Launching was by one-time balloon winches. The glare angle supports the orientation at Halton as the hangar faced about North.
Comet nose could also be Caravelle. The Jp is a JP and not a Strikemaster.
Good luck – Chris
RAF Sealand
My dad learnt to fly there in 1934. It was No. 5 FTS and he trained on Lynx Avros and then OTU’d on Siskin IIIa’s. Whilst he was doing so the RAF re-equipped and he did another OTU on Bulldog TM’s! He was posted to 56 Squadron at North Weald on Bulldog 2a’s.
And not even a bent propellor blade. . . . .
RAF Evanton
Just a quick one. Anyone researching Evanton might like to know it was called Novar in the 1930’s and was the home of FAA Flights whilst they were ashore. The site was part of Novar Estates and was near Evanton village.

Glider tug pictures
I’m new to the forum hence the late response to this thread. I have several photos of the tugs around Farnborough, Lasham, and Dunstable in the late 50’s.
Samples attached cover Tiger, Chipmunk, and Auster Tugs at Dunstable. G-ARDX at Dunstable. Roy Proctor flying RDX. RDX towing Skylark and Olympia 2b.

White Waltham RAeS Garden party
Hi Mark and everyone – thanks for your kindly welcome to the forum. I have a photo of the Spitfire and also attach a couple more on that day which may help identify the date. Please ignore the 1957 in the slide ID – it’s by no means the correct date. . . . .
regards Chris
