Eventually it ended but I was wondering from way conversation went if it might have involved an injured aircraft being vectored back to base. Anyone in aviation community able to comment on this?

Caught a canadian accent during one transmission possibly indicating CF-18’s are in action.

Any chance what I heard could have been related to the F-15E going down or would ATC be too far removed from that?

Aircraft went down at 17:30 EDT/15:30 MDT which is approximately when I heard the transmission.

V22 Osprey recovered the pilot. The WSO was taken care of by rebels prior to extraction. This explains why previous film showed an Osprey being readied on the Kearsage obviously for such cases.

Want to listen in on the action in Libya? Currently have Snake 11 (Spangdahlem F-16’s) and a RAF E-3 inbound Akritori. In the last hour we have had Ascot 9641 two Tornado’s GR4’s outbound Libya. Earlier had Viper 11 followed by weasel 07 inbound Aviano. All this is in the public domain by listening to the Malta ATC feed http://www.liveatc.net/search/?icao=MLA .
Something like ‘Porter 11’ USAF has asked for a cruising level of 50,000-60,000 feet! Forte 10 has gone to Sigonoella. Fascinating stuff.

Lot of air activity tonight. Tweets from Benghazi indicate shelling on outskirts from Libyan forces, oil storage depot on coast possibly near Tripoli afire plus attacks against Libyan sea elements in port.

Wonder where that new armour attacking Benghazi comes from. 24 hours ago it looked like it had ben neutralized. Remanants or reinforcements? New targets for Brimstones.

    From Beeb:

2029: A Libyan rebel radio station saying it broadcast from Misratah, in the west, says the “moment of victory is near”, according to the BBC’s media monitoring service. The radio station warned pro-Gaddafi forces who had lost contact with the commanders not to disguise themselves in civilian clothes. “Withdraw and hand yourselves over, because you are now isolated pockets”, the broadcast said.

Thanks Rob. Have enjoyed listening for past hour. Not a lot of activity but did overhear a US voice saying he would be back in about 4 hours and was going tactical. Assume this was a US craft headed to theatre.

Military sources say that facility was likely underground which accounts for one missile penetrating deep prior to exploding. Maybe the underground facility has been destroyed.

Interesting that there was little other action overnight. Perhaps damage assessment or political wrangling?

Appears whatever munitions was used were dropped from a Tornado. Could it possibly have been a GBU-28 “Deep Throat”? If there was a C&C facility 10 stories underground that may have reached it. And with any luck the mad Col was down there watching events. Just speculation but there is something curious about hitting this building which some say was completely abandoned.

That would have to mean the place was unmanned because anyone therein would have been killed. Conflicting info .

That building behind the statue with an aircraft in a fist was bombed in 1986. It was not repaired and left as a monument.

    http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/44983000/jpg/_44983444_monument_1999.jpg

The building that was hit was some sort of reception centre in the compound.

    TJ

Hmmmm. Kinda wondered about that. CNN kept alluding to it being the building but found myself asking why gadaffi would have housed visiting dignitaries there. There is a picture of the collapsed building issued by Libyan news agency but couldn’t tell for sure which it was. But Robertson also said the ceremonial tent where sultan gadaffi received guests was close by. US military now acknowledges compound was hit because building housed some C&C facilities. Interesting because gadaffi’s spokepeople say nobody was hurt. That would have to mean the place was unmanned because anyone therein would have been killed. Conflicting info (fog of war??).

Looking at watch it may be time for another air assault to commence with perhaps another wave of B-2’s and other assorted strikes. Tornado’s left Marham some time back and should have/be arriving about now.

FOX and MSNBC reporting the same. Fingers crossed that it could be over soon.

From pictures provided by CNN with Nik R reporting from compound, it appears the building which was hit had substained previous damage. It could be this attack was simply a warning to Gadaffi that they could strike with precision anywhere they want. This was a bit of “bouncing the rubble” likely knowing well that the building was uninhabited plus it had the symbolic “fist crushing USA airplane” outside it. But in any event it was highly unlikely that Moammar was within. He has likely skedaddled into a fortified position having had the c**p scared out of him.

The two holes Nik spoke of indicated a cruise attack and possibly they were of the loitering variety as they penetrated downwards through the concrete with the second detonating further into the building.

Navy and Marine Corps aircraft strike Libya as part of Operation Odyssey Dawn

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDWHgbkzTS8

MEDITERRANEAN SEA (NNS) — U.S. Navy EA-18G Growlers from coalition bases and U.S. Marine Corps AV-8B Harriers aboard USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) launched in support of Operation Odyssey Dawn to enforce U.N. Security Council Resolution 1973, which is centered on protecting Libyan citizens from further harm, Mar. 20.

Watched YouTube footage link on Navy/mil site and saw Sea Stallions/MH-53 Pavelow’s and V-22 Osprey’s launched and being readied. Aren’t these principally designed to insert troops? The Harrier footage was shown on CNN in past 30 minutes and gleaned from same site.

Just saw video on CNN of destroyed vehicles and it is indeed significant. Looks like the entire force was eliminated. It was said that the remainder evacuated whilst being pursued by rebel fighters. Assume this indicates some type of co-operation is happening with air strikes and rebels. Any chance any SAS/Delta’s could be on ground liasing matters?

Arwa Damon CNN field reporter in Benghazi reporting that she is 20 miles outside Benghazi in what she calls a “vehicle graveyard” with huge numbers of destroyed vehicles…tanks with their turrets blown off etc. So we have a mini “highway of death”. Time now to take the air assault to Misriyah and destroy the tanks and artillary which are shelling that city.

Well done boys. The Gadaffi advance on Benghazi has ended.

    WOW wow!!

Libya is now a live ground testing facility for new weapons

Always the case. The French haven’t had so much good equipment press since the Argentinians used the Exocet. Dassault Systems are in negotiations with various countries (including Brasil) over sale of Rafale’s and these actions will certainly provide good press. Some F-35 clients are starting (have started) wavering over that crafts cost (including Canada) and the Rafale, Typhoon and Griffon as well as the Super Hornet are making some noise. In Canada Dassault would combine with Bombardier (Quebec hence French connection) on joint project. But the Conservative Government are standing firmly behind their 65 example purchase of Lightning II’s at least for now. The advantage of the Rafale is that’s it’s multi-role (as I was reminded in earlier post) vs the Typhoon’s almost singular air superiority role. The F/A-18F would be a good fit and Australia has bought them as interim substitutes whilst decreasing their F-35-A purchase.

PS…speaking of using that ‘new car smell’ equipment, I wouldn’t be surprised to see some Raptor’s in the air above Libya in a “support Role” as the US action is deemed. Although I doubt that any Libyan aircraft would rise in the skies unless it was a MiG 25 making a run for it.

The Rafale is an omnirole fighter (Typhoon’s an air superiority fighter). Weapons used could be AASMs, LGBs, even SCALP cruise missiles (but not those for CAS, obviously).

Thanks DK. My knowledge dated back to this aircrafts origins. Should have Wikipediaed it before asking. I assume they used LGB’s and possibly cannon. But are any other types of French ground attack aircraft now involved?
