Did any other pilots in the RAF or any other Air Force fly with missing limbs or bits , or was it just Douglas Bader , I know there was one 1st world war pilot with only one eye .

A pilot not mentioned on that thread though is Percy Blamire – a Coventry Garage owner who raced a Miles Gemini profusely in the 1950s and 60s. He had one leg but I don’t know if he served in the military with his disability.

CFS have all the part numbers as they overhaul these props. Funny enough CFS are on the old Alvis works!!!

To be strictly accurate CFS occupy what was the Alvis test facility where they tested their aero engines and the various military vehicles they produced.
The “works” or factory was in Coventry – a site on Holyhead Road now occupied by a retail park 🙁

It is conceivable the bricks are being taken by skip to a reclamation company and will be transferred to the building’s new location cleaned and ready to use.

This is probably the blindingly obvious suggestion that’s already been tried, but have you contacted the Science Museum? As you probably already know, they have a fabric wing Hurri on display and perhaps they therefore have some technical details for fabric wings stashed away somewhere?
Wasn’t there some form of exchange between the Science Museum example and the one at the Birmingham Museum (Think Tank)? I only say that to add a second string to AdlerTag’s suggestion.

……. the fabric wing has a zig-zag of trusses between front and rear spars, which themselves are made up of upper and lower polygonal-section booms joined by a web. The whole thing, when viewed in plan, forms a warren girder, much like the side view of a bailey bridge…..
Did any other Hawker type employ this sort of wing construction??

Pierre Closterman in “The Big Show” describes an action over Scapa Flow on 21st February, 1944. He and Ian Blair were scrambled in their “strato-Spit VIIs” to intercept what they thought would be “one of the new Junkers 86 P’s?”. They got to 43,000ft about 1000ft above their quarry that turned out to be a “Messerschmitt 109 G equipped with two fat auxilliary tanks under the wings” The three aircraft went into a high-speed dive and Blair managed a short burst and the 109 exploded.

I remember, when helping restore Vampire F.1 VF301 many years ago, at being suprised how much filler material there was on the wings under the paint – presumably there to give a correct aerofoil shape.

Trouble is it’s people who live some miles away from the airport (eg under take-off, circuit and approach) who are most voiciferous in opposition to the airport.

Strange question – it’s not under any threat is it? Graham Vale and his colleagues seem to be going from strength to strength and have done marvellously to acquire and move all those aeroplanes from Long Marston.
