Barry Clay has ok’d for me to post his pic of G-AJOG/OO-ERY at Chivenor November, 1963 – the latter registration can just be discerned on the port fin/rudder.

Lovely looking machine. I’ve also seen both Aircoupe and Ercoupe used – that maybe something to do with the different companies that produced the design (how many were there beside Alon?).

I suspect it has a following this side of the pond as it’s looks fought off the resistance to American “spam-cans” (Cessnas and Pipers) that invaded our shore/killed off our light aircraft industry in the 1960s.

Last one from me for now – SAAB J.29 arriving at Baginton from Southend. Again, haven’t looked up the date but sometime, I think, in 1984. Looking at the background the lorry is on the new MAM site, the Vulcan behind is still on the old (extended) site.
The J.29 was in quite a poor state after sitting near the sea for all those years and, before long, she was roaded again into the Coventry workshops of the Manpower Services Commission where unemployed (largely ex-AWA Bitteswell) workers did a superb restoration job (one of four for the MAM) on her. When returned she was one of the first aircraft to go into the new Sir Frank Whittle Jet Heritage Centre.

PS thinking about it this photo might have been taken upon departure for the MSC workshop.

Indeed, as I said in post 10, Barry Clay’s photo (posted on his Forum) was taken in the blister hangar at Chivenor very soon before the axe fell Nov. ’63.

Is it the “Tom Thumb” designed and built by Mike Crossley the car looks like a Cortina. Driver ???

That was quick Robert – and not a very good picture to work off either. Two more pictures here taken on the same occasion when we were collecting the Tom Thumb from Bewdley, Worcs. on 29th July, 1969.

The Tom Thumb is an obscure little machine – it was never completed/never flew and is rarely thought of. It’s builder Mike Crossley (with his father) had given up on building a Pou du Ciel after the fatal accidents and, having been at one of the UK’s technical aviation schools, decided to build a design of his own. For those that don’t know not only was the Crossley family THE Crossley family (cars, lorries, buses, etc., later bought out by Avro) but Mike Crossley was to become a Battle of Britain pilot and later rose to rank of Wing Commander. So, this obscure little, unfinished homebuilt does have some significance.

nearly forgot, the driver was Bob Ogden (at that time Chairman of the Midland A.P.S.) well-known for his World-wide aircraft museum guides. The Ford Cortina Bob had brand-new. I think it was a few weeks after this that the Cortina and trailer (and we inside said Cortina) were all upside down in a ditch having skidded on some early-morning ice on the way to Thetford to collect Bob’s newly acquired BAC Drone(s).

No prizes for guessing this one as the serial is plain to see.
It was second “change underpants” time (the first was being up on top of the tailplane with no safety measures – it’s a bl**dy long way up!!) – was the canopy going to clear the Cosford railway bridge?
There were two Javelins up for tender at Cosford – we desperately wanted XA699 as it was AWA-built at Baginton – NewarK A.M. got the other one.

I think that one is XK741 currently at MAM. Roger, what say yee…?.

Yep, it is XK741. We had just collected it – fuselage (with canopy thankfully) and tail surfaces from Wolverhampton. We later managed to source some undercarraige/wheel units (T.1 I think) and a proper Folland(?) bang-seat and, presently I believe, some replica wings are being constructed for it. The picture was taken outside Soans Ford dealers in Sydenham, Leamington Spa where it was to be stored. The Museum wasn’t ready at Baginton so that would make the pic (I could look it up but I’m feelin’ lazy :p) about 1974.
Richard Soans was a great supporter of the MAPS/young MAM.

I know what it is and it’s identity. I know where I took the picture and even remember the name of the driver 🙂 But can’t put an exact date on it.

Anyone like to have a go at indentifying it? shouldn’t be too difficult.

    Hi Newforest;
Thank you for the link, but it is Less than useless. More to the point it is extremely aggravating! I tried it at least ten times and every time the tantalizing aircraft photos and text switch after five seconds,to a partial page with just a few annoying advertisements for tee shirts and other junk, with no forward or reverse arrow feature, no website index other than their ads, and no way to click on the actual website with aircraft.
Why do people bother constructing websites that advertising hosts prevent you from seeing?

I’ve a feeling that is not Barry Clay’s site – I suspect someone copied his material and created a false site. I don’t get the continual adverts you mention. The e-mail address shown with an invitation to write to him I think was the cause of his change of e-mail address a while back – I’m sure it’s not valid.
