Ok ok ok looks like people are getting a little lost here, so please allow me to get you all back on track, this is the current situation: 1, 3 and 5 have been guessed:
Svestopol, Andrea Doria and Harugo
This leaves 2 and 4- which vessels are they? I’ll give you all 24 hours before I call it- stay safe!
Well lets finish this one off first, there are two left guys.
Well done Kev and you too Tiornu, great team effort there.
Where is Wan? He’s usually really good at these.
There are two left now, keep going
On a side note, how have you guys found this series? Should I keep them going?
Tiornu: Mate you are doing so well.
The third ship is indeed the Andrea Doria, any one who knows WW2 naval history knows the story of AD. Sorry Dis mate, Zara is different, but thanks for playing.
More can be found at the comandosupremo.com website.
Scoot: Mate glad you got my phone message, sorry if I rang at an odd hour, tried working out the time difference in my head.
Kev and Ed: both wrong, but I will give you a clue- it is Japanese- half a mark each!
Two down, three to go- it’s getting harder now guys :diablo:
Sad to say this but I have to agree with sferrin, The F-35B is going to be rather than it might be, it comes down to, as rightly pointed out, economics. Far too much has been invested with this project to even consider it being canceled now.
Opening an Italian or British line is one thing that may help reduce the costs, but the Americans aren’t going to allow that to happen any time soon (case in point- look at the A-10, they have recently offered the entire program and production line to Turkey, how long has the A-10 been around?).
Should alternatives be sort, the only things I can think of are these points:
RN will be set, since except for four aircraft they sold to India, they still have their relatively new FA.2’s, conversion of some of the older GR’s that are deemed excess to the RAF could help the situation but as pointed out, the QE carriers are able to undertake F-35C operations with a modification and cost. This will be offset with the French also purchasing the same standards for their PA.2 carrier.
The USMC will be fine as they already have Hornets so there is nothing to worry about there, they will just need mini carriers with cats or possibly the Russian style launch and recovery system.
The Italians and the Spanish do indeed have a problem but that too can be sorted out with modification to the Russian system mentioned above, though size may be the restriction.
Finally the last option I can think of would be to revive some of the older projects such as:
The VJ-101C
The VAK191B
The Mirage IIIV
Finally, and this is the more radical idea to be revived…
The Convair F2Y Sea Dart

This last option does actually make a lot more sense if you look in terms of stealth (weapons carried internally), cost (conventional water take offs and landings, unrestricted vessel lengths), easier maintenance (conventional engine over vectored engine), more supportability with upgrades (you could drop in an F404 or any other engine bringing in line with what ever your conventional fleet has).
These ideas are just what if’s and no I am not thinking of bringing them back, but just pointing out what could have been.
Tiornu: Mate for someone who has trouble identifying vessels, you seem to be doing really well.
The First Ship is indeed a Gangut class vessel, infact it is the Sevastopol (aka- Paris Commune/ Parizhskaya Kommuna). She fought many battles with the Black Sea Fleet during WW2 and shelled German positions on the Crimea.
More can be seen at the sevastopol.info website.
One down, four to go.
Someone is on the ball- care to go for the bonuses?
Come on Guys, where are you all?
Again following Unicorn on this one, but I do agree- these polls are too broad! If these are to be escorts for carriers, then they’d have to fit in as part of the BG. But given the multi-tasking that happens these days- I feel that these vessels should be more inclined to be part of a BG but also lead a BG as well as offer long distance patrol duties and even single ship mission capable- the best comparison I can give here is what out new Hobart class are being built to do!
Yeah I’d have to agree with Unicorn here!
I am surprised again here. Given that this is a mythical “Follow on” design, why not incorporate new technologies that are being tested now!
My choices would be reflective of this and are as follows:
A) Metal Storm
B) Rail Gun concept
C) Laser system in a reduced form of that being used on the ABL-1 for the USAF.
My vote would be as follows:
D) Pentamaran: Wide deck area, short hull length, makes for a load of goodies and given todays taskings would mean that this vessel could be sent anywhere for any reason!
B) Trimaran: Similar reasons as the above just less room.
A) Mono hull: Tired and trusted, add wave brakes (as on the Armidale class patrol boats down here) and a dual bow thruster system and you have a fairly capable system limited only by budget and design length.
I am surprised that an E) Catamaran, system wasn’t on offer here!
Ed: Mate you raise some interesting points, most disturbing of these being the fact that my words seemed to have been a tad on the sharp side- Super, mate you didn’t take offence at all did you? Sorry if I came across as such, I did not mean to be.
Ed, mate I still stand by my thoughts on the “SHRINKING FORCES OF THE UK”, not long ago AFM published a story about the problems with the RAF with the main points coming from the Air Marshall himself and he made references to similar problems in the other services. The T-45 order was cut how many times? 14 down to 12, 12 down to 8, 8 down to 6. It’s the same with just about every other vessel in the service. The latest OPV’s are testimony to the UK Government wishing to cut back on spending by leasing rather than buying. this is leading me to ask a question in a separate thread (stay tuned).
As for the RN being the most capable in Europe, I am thinking that there are a few other navies starting to challenge that title: France most certainly would, Italy not being too far behind and Spain still in the equation! Now if you wish to take into account Russia, that opens up a heap of other issues too even today!
Regardless guys, the main focus here seems to be the fact that a multi-rolled vessels are the key these days. Vessels are being tasked with everything from patrol duties, the expat evac and disaster relief. Indigenous air components are being seen as an essential now rather than an after thought or add on. Soon a UAV/UCAV asset will also be seen as a primary need.
Tid like you mate I am thinking along the same lines.
Ok guys you have me on this, but as it has been said, this is a “Temporary” solution!
By the sounds of the use of these vessels on “Counter Narcotics” duties, the RN is being stretched for vessels to fulfill it’s duties. It’s the same for us down here with the RAN, we have had our Survey vessels and Mine Hunters out on border interception duties (the Survey vessels that usually are white have now gone sea grey in order to bring them into line with the rest of the navy fleet and help with those they stop realise that these are naval vessels.

This brings me back to saying that the RN are being cut back to nothing and emphasises the point that soon the UK will have no navy because the polies want more pay in their pockets and defence is the first place it is always cut from. No clear and definable threat- no need for defence. No defence- Threats occur. Thus proving, the biggest threat today is the politician!
Hmmmmm I can see that there would be an advantage to a “Shelter” being built there, but seriously doubt it has been done for two major reasons, please allow me to show you all.

RFA Cardigan Bay
Here we see RFA Cardigan Bay- couldn’t ask for a better shot to emphasis my points.

The design of this type of vessel has been thought out accordingly, the cranes need to provide full spherical access across the deck, when in port or when mounting amphib ops. Both cranes have a full 180* swing, running flush from the back of the super structure out to either side. The reason is simple, this allows movement of cargo from the vessels mid point (where roll and pitch are least) to landing craft at sea or in tidal channels such as you’d find in areas where docks have been removed, damaged or otherwise. A Hanger here removes the main functionality of why this vessel was built and is in service!
Secondly (and this is really clear in this pic- bless the person who took it), see the external access stairs. Notice how each level has external access via them? Now see the sides of the vessel? While stealth has it’s advantages, there is no excuse for ignoring safety. These stairs give access to the deck should a fire occur on board. It’s been a while since I was in the navy but I’m pretty sure that safety standards haven’t dropped any, meaning that there needs to be at least two ways to get to a evac point if anything happens. The usual evac point is the flight deck on any vessel and given the small size of the superstructure, I’d say that they have one set of stairs internally. Given the arrangement of the external stairs, the internal would most likely be in the center facing forward and aft for each deck. In any case, any stairs leading to an evac point can not be blocked by anything no matter what operational use it might have! A shelter for helos here is just really not on the cards, so I challenge you to back up your words with pics mate. I know the RN and the RFA, they are good people and are really proud of the rust buckets they live on, they show any one interested where they live and work and what their life is like- I have met enough of them to know that they don’t mind pics being taken, they’ll tell you where you can’t take pics and if you respect them, they respect you. PICS PLEASE, NOT WORDS.
I have to agree with Scooter here on this one! If Russia hid the true cost of the work, then they have to suffer with what they are getting, after all they managed to sell India the Mig-29K’s- something the IN didn’t really want.
Russia has gotten more and more from India with the promise of a dream. They are basically building a new ship and as with all new ships, there are always teething problems- the same can be said for major modifications (the RAN learnt that with the Adelaide class upgrades to the Super FFG’s).
If I were in position, I’d cancel the deal and crack the whip on the local job (of which they want three), can the Gorshkov, put the funding into a fourth local and the prob will be solved- yes I know it’s not that easy but the way things are going with this bucket of bolts, it might be easy.
