I am suprised at you Arthur, you claim to have ALL the books and ALL the knowledge about ALL the planes. If this was the case then you’d have the same reports as I do from around October 2001 that state this planes capabilities.
I have been following the plane right from the begining, back when it was first published in Popular Mechanics. Then the plane was offered as a Homeland Defence Fighter after a certain incident in September 2001 and that’s where interest really took off. There is a lot of potential in this design it’s the marketing that I feel is draging it behind. Having IAI on board is a huge plus but also a huge draw back as the American government will want to control the program far too much like always.
I too am at a loss as to the purchace of these since the price of the Eagles is not much more, we do have the money (AU$14B in deficit). The news papers here are calling the proposed deal a “Cost Blowout in Defence”.
SLL: Mate to me the RSAF is very capable indeed, but with most of their assets based o/s (S.211’s in Australia, A-4’s in France and heaps in the US), they may as well call themselves the worlds most experienced at training in travel!
I always wondered if a war happened that involved the RSAF, how would they get their equipment home for use on the front lines? I remember reading that some of the American equipment sold to them had to stay in the US for some political reason or other.
As much as I love South Africa (thanks for the pic btw), I would have to say Japan, they have such a capability without being offencive.

The way I see it, the RAAF wants a stop gap strike plane that is not going to cost much, is extremly modern, and most importantly enough, is available now!
As has been pointed out already, the Super Hornet has lost every comp it has been put in; Poland bought F-16’s, Eastern Europe is buying Gripens (smart people them) Malaysia bought Flankers and the rest of the world just don’t see any use for this plane.
This actually sounds like a government to government deal that is being done where we buy something American to make Johnny look like a good friend and keep Georgie happy. Remember to sell a modern combat jet these days, MOST people look at who else has them in service, Since the Super Bug doesn’t have anyone in it’s listing it’s been a hard sell.
Scoot: don’t forget mate the Super Hornet has a 73% comonality with the standard Hornet, at least that is what Boeing claims.
Ja- Maybe I am missing something! Do you see any advantages of the Super Hornet over the Strike Eagle???
Well yes I do Mr Logistics King sir 😛 Think about it, the Super Bug shares common parts with the standard Bug, thus it would make more sence buying these, besides- training would follow one line rather than two for the F-111/Hornet Combo, the Super Bugs would be able to accomodate standard Bug pilot training and not cost too much extra!
The other thing is, if we get 24 of them, that’s enough for both 1 and 6 Sqdns (remember we started out with only 24 F-111’s), so for these planes to equip only one sqdn really doesn’t make sence. :confused:

I just checked the usual sources and the only place I found anything was on “The Age” and it states that the deal is a consideration and not a certainty!:confused: :confused: :confused:
The Department of Defence and the Minister of defence’s websites have nothing mentioned on them and I have learnt that AFR is not the most reliable source of information 😡 😡
In any case I think if this deal does go ahead, I might just look for a new home, say South Africa- they have a great Air Force and operate my two favourite planes (Gripens and Hawks).
Reminds me of the old British comedy show “Yes Minister” when the young chap finds out that the arms contract was taken in bribes he tries to talk to Humphrey about it but as usual Humphrey uses his knowledge of red tape to totally confuse the poor chap.

I have just recieved the latest news letter from ATG and there is something interesting in it about its capabilities:
ATG Reports Major Milestones in Javelin Development
In October, ATG reported the accomplishment of major milestones in the Javelin program including completion of a Preliminary Design Review (PDR), construction of cockpit and wing mockups, transonic wind tunnel testing, and initial tooling fabrication to support production of the conforming aircraft.
The Javelin PDR, held at the ATG facility in Englewood, Colorado in mid-August, confirmed the functional and physical integration of the business jet’s airframe and verified that systems met design criteria. A joint review conducted by Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) and ATG in September further validated the aircraft configuration, marking a major milestone in the Javelin program’s development.

ATG engineers and the cockpit pilot-vehicle interface working group collaborated on construction of a cockpit mockup, which provides a three‑dimensional model that verifies physical integration of cockpit equipment and validates maintenance procedures. ATG is working with Porsche Design Studio to develop styling concepts for the cockpit interior design, including improving the Javelin cockpit ergonomically and creating a business jet interior. ACTA, the Utah-based wing supplier for the Javelin, has constructed a partial wing mockup that ATG is using to evaluate system installation and finalize access panel sizing.
In October, ATG’s Flight Sciences engineers completed 117 hours of transonic wind tunnel testing in Buffalo, New York. The testing—conducted on a 15-percent scale model at speeds between 0.5 and 1.1 Mach—included 180 pressure taps, hinge moment strain gauges on the leading edge flap and yaw damper, and buffet strain gauges on the horizontal and vertical tails. Flight Sciences engineers also ran a high Reynolds number test (3 to 4 million) at 0.2 and 0.3 Mach to refine lift increments on the flap systems.

Transonic Wind Tunnel Test
The Javelin design has completed a total of 1,173 hours of wind tunnel testing, including 223 hours in the transonic wind tunnel.
ATG initiated tooling manufacture with inspection and approval of dorsal and belly skin outer mold line masters. These tools serve as masters for tooling used to build the fuselage of the conforming aircraft. ACTA, another Utah-based composites supplier, completed aileron and elevator mold tools in October and is making significant progress on rudder, yaw damper, trailing edge, and vertical mold tools.
Turb: mate I’d love to see a pic of the Corgi Diecast you have (both of them really).
Uni: you are right for the most part mate, there’d be only a few vessels that might be able to handle the baby tilt, and all of those in US service. Still as you said, future designs might be capable.
Scoot: mate you’ve been around long enought to remember my epic battles about the RAAF looking at the Su-34, I won’t drag it up again! I will how ever say that the chances are better than nil, I’d call them slight.

Now it’s the USS Trenton, a vessel with completely different operating requirements and parts from the British, Russian and Indiginous vessels they already operate.
Another thing that seems to have been over looked here (especially from the logistics king- Scooter), is the different tools needed for the Trenton! Remember that the US is the last bastion of “Imperial” mesaurements, thus this ship will require a completely new tool box just for it!
