Apart from the Aussie Mirages, I really loved the South African models, especially with their special Rocket pod/ Fuel tank combos that they deployed with, anyone with a pic? Here are some other SAAF pics.

Still it should never be forgotten that Israel had them and when France cut off access to parts, look what happened (I’ll be Dassult are kicking themselves over that)!

Of course no Mirage III thread would ever be complete without the Mirage IIING pic 😉 Look carefully at the double delta wing, it’s really subtle.

And finally to cap off a good chat, how about some head ons 😉
These are F-103’s of the FAB on the Milavia site from a friend of ours 😉 Hello!

Con: Mate it’s ok, I find it all interesting. I mean if Australia can buy the C-17, then surely Canada can as well. I know you had a very Pesimistic government before but this government seems to be looking at defence in a new light.

We dumped our Echos when the Julliettes came on line, so I can understand how you are feeling.

I like the idea of the mixed transport fleet proposed above, CC-150’s with C-130J’s and C-17’s that would be a very viable option and very similar to what we have here, worth looking into, though I don’t think Canada can wait for the A-400, lets be real here, it’s only a matter of time before something drastic happens and the Armed forces are blamed (as always), yet no one really looks at who is really to blame- the politicians!

Dubya: Yes mate that is a pressing need and our skies will never be the same without the drone of those engines. I couldn’t believe that we canned the replacement a few years ago just as a winner was about to be announced. I am in two minds as to a replacement, both the C-295 and the C-27J are fine planes and I would really like to see all the options on the table before a winner was selected. Given the current expenditure, perhaps a fleet of secondhand S-360’s that are sitting at Brisbane airport might be a good option, or even some C-212/400’s (I’d be happy with both options). The main thing that has to be acknoledged by the RAAF and the ADF is that nothing around today can do what the Caribou can do sadly, but we must move on.

Merlock: Australia did have the F-4 E in service as a Bomber while we were waiting for the F-111’s to come on line, we leased 24, over three years (1970-1973), they kept their USAF serials. We lost one and ordered a replacement for it, it was paid for and kept which it is now on display at the RAAF Museum in Point Cook, Victoria.

MPACHA: ya goose 😛 I said:

the greatest combat aircraft Australia has ever had

The Avon Sabre was good, the Mirage was fabulous but I can not and will not bow to the Hornet being anywhere near good! Sorry. As for my pic, the Pigs are superb, the Mirage was a miricle and the Canberra was incredible (I have seen the HARS one in a flying display, it can be thrown around the sky like a fighter, it’s amazing). I do like you pic though mate, Kudos to you for posting it!

Oh and Merlock, feel free mate, not my pic anyway but the guy is happy to share!

Thanks Vymp, so basically 14 Yak-130’s are sold to Algeria (I remember hearing that they also wanted the Mig-AT as well, what’s happening there)?

    Is Russia buying any Yaks?

Fed: mate the Goalkeeper is a much harder hitting system than the Sea Zenith, GK is of 30mm calibre and the SZ is only 25mm. There are advantages for both but when it comes down to it, Turkey is the only operator of the SZ where as the GK has gone global (three countries actually produced it after all).

Can’t wait to see what is on the other film, should be good. I too have yet to convert to Digital. My trouble is that I have over $18k worth of equipment so I would like a camera that will be able to use my lenses that I already have.

Con: mate according to that same article I mentioned, the C-17 is seriously being looked at by all the scandanavian countries (rather interesting there) and also by Germany.

Now I know Norway and Sweden are interested in a strategic air lifter but I wasn’t aware of the requirement by Finland and Denmark and if Iceland buys even one I will eat my hat!

The Mirage III O were fitted with a Rolls-Royce Avon RB.146, not ATAR engines.

Sorry Antoine, I don’t know where you got that info from but that is wrong and I’ll show you, this pic comes from a guy who was an Engine mechanic on the Miracles back when they were in service (note the caption):
    http://members.tripod.com/~imogiri/aircraft/a3-73_engine.jpg

The reason the Pakistanis wanted the RAAF Mirages was the total commonality with their existing fleet.

That is not true either Mike, sorry mate. The reason they bought our planes was because we offered them a) so cheaply, b) they were the only ones for sale at the time and c) because our planes were basically factory fresh. We did look after them well!

I am surprised to hear Ja speaking so positively of the Miracles, they certainly were not well liked by many in Oz.

Ummm excuse me? Wow that’s the first I knew about it, in fact everyone here was sorry to see them go, no one wanted the Hornets and it was the F/A-18’s that were not liked. The Mirage was a god send! If you don’t believe me, look at the excerpt from the book that C-Seven has posted above.

The French blocked their use on operations in Vietnam, and threatened to cut off spares supplies if they were deployed. That does not make for a great bargain (buying 116 aircraft, but not being allowed to actually use them as desired not making them very useful).

Well that part is true but only because of the political implications. You have to remember, Vietnam not long before hand was actually a French territory and reguardless the French don’t like harming their own. Would you give someone a gun and be happy if they used it on your Cousin?

Certainly the impression I have received was that they were not well liked – they were reasonably capable

You’re not an Aussie are you mate? Nor have you lived here, right? Speak to any Aussie who remembers the Mirage in service and ask them which they prefered in service the IIIO or the Hornet and I will bet both nuts mate that the answer you get is …Bring back the Mirage!

C-seven: mate thanks for thinking of me, I did fly in the back of a IIID but no way was I a pilot of those (*hangs head in shame*). As for who is right, well the text you have shown from a book predates the M2K so I’d probably go with that one, though it must be said that the Hellenic Air Force were able to test both systems in house since they had them in their service, but it all comes down to training as implied in the text.

I finish here with a pic for you all, it’s a rare one showing the greatest combat aircraft Australia has ever had, enjoy!

Will the entire Richmond based fleet move to Amberly?

No not yet, after 2010 maybe, but the current decission as to the fate of RAAF Richmond has not yet been decided.

Eventually though, the C-17’s might go to Amberley and the Herk fleet split up between RAAF Darwin and the Townsville Army base, thus giving us quicker responce times for operational deployments in SEAsia and beyond.

Steve, you can’t seriously believe that mate can you? We’ve had troubles with the blackhawks for a long time. We should never have bought them. The Seahawks are good machines I’ll give you that much but what’s the point in having a common fleet if some are to be replaced and others aren’t?

Under the Air 9000 deal, the Seahawks will eventually be replaced (not immediately) by the Naval version of the MRH-90.

    Here we go again, *sigh*

The SH-2G was selected for the OPV’s and the Anzacs because these ships had smaller decks then the FFG’s currently in service. Since the cancellation of the OPV it has been proven that the Seahawks can operate off the deck of the Anzacs.

I still can’t figure out why the profoundly expensive NH-90 was chosen, when Australia already operates a relatively large S-70 fleet.

Read up on Air 9000 and it will tell you mate, most of the current helo fleet in the ADF are to be replaced with a new single type offering commonality and logistical support on a scale never before seen in the ADF. S-70’s are to be replaced under that same article (phase 7 IIRC). The MRH-90 offered the best deal of upgrading the amount of personel/cargo over larger distances whilest still operating off the current sized decks. All the other contenders could not meet these critical goals (SH-60 Battlehawk not enough range and not enough troops/cargo, EH-101 far too big to operate off the deck of an FFG). This is why we went for it.

Then of course, you really have to wonder why the incredibly expensive Eurocopter Tiger deal was made?

Ummmm ok well we have spoken about this before as well mate, go look in the thread on the Modern Military Aviation section at the thread on the Rooivalk currently running. Basically we chose the Tiger because it being the newest kid on the block, offered the most amount of design growth potential over it’s rivals. Which would you have prefered we got (please don’t tell me the AH-64)?

With the U.S. commitment to the CH-53K program, perhaps Australia should start considering a heavylift replacement for its small CH-47D fleet.

Of course, it is questionable whether the CH-53K will be compatible with either the French or Spanish LHD designs that have been downselected.

What isn’t in doubt is that the CH-47 is most definitely not a naval helicopter.

Mate seriously, what are you on? It is questionable if the CH-53K program is ever really going to get going. Australia is happy with the Chinook and to give them up for the CH-53 is insane to even think of because it is adding a new type to the inventory that we are trying to cut down on, I mean didn’t you just say:

Australia’s helicopter procurement policy is a mess. Too many new types have been selected, and logistics will prove to be a nightmare.

And here you are talking about a new helo, no way. We’ve had the Chinook in service for a long time, we love them and know them in-side-out. More of the same type is acceptable, converting them over to a new machine and more of them is insane.

Yes Steve, they do, most French guns have at least a DP role if not a multi role. Still I think that they are refering to a smaller caliber weapon.

What interests me more is the fact that Oto mate are giving up on the 40mm turrets and going with the smaller 30mm guns. What I’d like to know is what effect will this have on those navies with the 40mm in service already (and there are a few of them), what support and spares will Oto offer after cancellation of the line?

    Interesting pics mate, thanks.

    Just a couple of questions:
    1. Why are they flying the Turkish flag?
    2. Why is the weapoins fit on these three tubs different to those above?

Australia had a heap of these wonderful planes and after service were sold to Pakistan for a symbolic $1 (geee that sounds like another deal that was done 😉 )

As can be seen with these pics, we had them delivered in the standard Frnech All metal finish with Red intake warnings, they then converted to a two tone (Dark Olive Green/ Dark Slate Grey) camo, then ended up in a Light Sky Grey low vis colour scheme.

The last few are A3-2 in service with ARDU (Australian Research and Developement Unit) initially a Hi vis yellow and black paint job with an indicator paintes aft near the jet pipe to show AOA (this was easy for the pics you line up the botom of the pic and then measure the AOA with a protractor- often the simplest of things work the best 😉 ). Later on in life they gaines a hi vis Day glow orange and white scheme as can be seen and even worked along side the Hornets as can be seen in the last pic.

Here is one of our former Mirage III’s in service these days with the Pakistani Air Force
