I was just reading a piece that says that China’s carrier air wing maybe further ahead than originally thought! Thought they don’t know what planes will eventually serve on the carriers, there is a seculation that they have a plane that is a combination between the S-3 Viking and the failed Yak 44 for the AEW role.

Speculation still surrounds the type of fighter that will be used but more and more people are leaning towards the Su-33 in which Chinese officials have had a keen interest in for some time!

As for who will have the better force projection in a decade, that’s simple, you khave to just look at what is in service now and what is being built now. India can’t get itself organised and would rather squabble over prices of equipment from other countires. China just gets in there and builds things, most of which they produce the parts for anyway, so the answer already lays with China

The Periscope rattled when trying to use it at PD

The Engines made a huge amount of noise due to the fact that the Rubber stoppers that they rested on either were never put in or had deteriorated due to the amount of vibration the engines produced

Finally the computers made a rather loude hum for some strange reason

Of all these problems (including the water flow as mentioned above), only the computer noise is yet to be fixed. The RAN has announced that with the new ADCAP torps will come a new computer system and this will be noise tested before installation.

Well if you want an honest oppinion from someone who served aboard one of them I’ll be happy to tell you what I know.

Most of the teething problems have now been sorted out, HMAS Collins is due to re-enter the fleet soon after having been handed back to ASC for fixing of the main problems (from the third boat on these probems were taken in hand on the production line- these being called “Fast Track” subs- only the first two, Collins and Farncombe experienced the infoamous problems). AIP and TLAM tubes have been given away but we are adding ADCAP to the class, this should make them a lot more potent in the region.

Apart from that, the class is coming along, finally. The other major intergration is going well as well- that of placing women on board subs (I knew the first woman to be accepted for Sub duty, it’s all she had wanted to do).

As for a battle between China and Australia, I would have to favour the home ground as we have the better boats now, especially after the upgrades

When are their 209’s due to enter service? Personally I think they too too long in getting the new subs, sure there was the lifting of sanctions and all that but they had the green light a while ago.

Well I don’t know about you guys but I recently heard in Jane’s that Both Type 42’s are getting refitted and returing to full active service. The UK has finally decided to sell parts to Argentina (viewing the sale as old and antiquated equipment by modern standards). Thus both Hercules and Santisima Trinidad will be back in service by 2008 for a minimum of 15 years.

As for the Lynx, yes they did have two, both (type 23’s) were sold as part of the weapons systems of the ships. One crashed killing the crew the other was later sold to Denmark becoming S-035. Here’s a link to a pic I found and posted on the board here: Argentine Lynx.
