It was a very anxious time for my family, as my sister’s husband was a CPO on Hermes during the conflict. I remember him telling me that every time they had an Exocet warning, the ship would steer away from the threat, presenting her rear end, so he could almost draw an ‘X’ on his bunk wall where the missile was most likely to penetrate!
From my office window, it was amazing to see Nimrods suddenly appearing with refuelling probes, Sidewinders, and new gash-looking ventral strakes.
I had quite a few good friends on the crews, and briefed a lot of them for the trip south, so practically every TV news broadcast was avidly watched…

Impressive watching the guys scratch building new WW1 fighters. Great photography, and if there was any CGI, I didn’t notice it…

Seeing the amazing Norman Watt-Roy and Wilko Johnson supporting the Stranglers in Glasgow a couple of years ago re-awakened my love of Ian Dury and the Blockheads, not that I needed much encouragement!
Ian also played some good character parts in a few movies, too.
    Thanks for the reminder Moggie…

The colouring of an athlete’s clothes isn’t going to make them jump higher, swim faster or run fast with flames behind them …

I totally disagree – many factors go into giving a top athlete a winning edge, however slight, and mental state must be one of the most powerful.
It’s well known that humans are affected by colours – green in hospitals for inducing calmness, reds and yellows for warning signs, etc.
Blue to me is a very passive, submissive colour, while red has connotations of aggression and danger.
Colours of materials can also influence muscle cooling or warming in certain conditions…

The Pictish tribes of Scotland used the swastika a lot over a thousand years ago on their carved standing stones – here’s one in Peebles, bottom left…

As Frankie Boyle once said, ‘Nobody thought Mel Gibson could play a Scot but look at him now! A wife beating, alcoholic, racist..’…

No need to make that sound like a bad thing…;)

    Looks great to me!
It’s only for one year though – Scotland will have it’s own Olympic team by 2016…
