I’m the historian on a US-based forum about vintage Harley-Davidsons, and over the years I’ve learned not to judge the US members by European standards.

For example, on a thread discussing the causes and effects of Global Warming, we Europeans mainly spoke of buying smaller, more efficient cars, insulating our homes, recycling our waste, etc, but the general US reaction was to stockpile tinned food and literally tons of ammunition…

ED817, ED912, ED915, ED921¸ ED924, ED929, ED933 are probably in this photo, taken at Lossiemouth in 1946, showing loads of Lancasters waiting to get chopped by 46 MU…

Nearby, a scrapman fly-tipped parts he couldn’t use into a disused quarry in Elgin’s Oak Wood (also known as Quarry Wood, or sometimes Quarrel Wood), like instruments and switches. Literally hundreds of them, mainly from locally scrapped Lancasters, judging by the parts I dug up.
I was able to reconstruct one complete Lancaster starter switch, and it now starts my 1974 Harley-Davidson. So there is slight, but very real chance it is from one of the scrapped Dambusters Lancs!

Very interesting thread Brattacus – sorry about the relics I promised you, but things just got too hectic with my house move.

Thought you might be interested in a snippet of local news I remember as a kid, probably in the mid 1960s.
A Lossiemouth guy had collected a large sweetie jar full of US silver dollars from the beach area around the Beach Bar.
The story suggested it was from a WW2 US ‘pay plane’ which had crashed into the sea on approach…

My first thought was “Why would she want to introduce another child into the world who may be genetically predisposed to cancer?”
Unless of course having his heir would give her financial advantages…

Hey Stuart – you must remember that old Elgin worthy Geordie Desperate, and Rosie Bottom?

Euthanasia is still widely practiced in UK hospitals, but it’s just not talked about.
My experiences with both my parents and two brothers, was that the Doc would have a quiet word with us, asking if we wanted to stop whatever was keeping them alive, i.e. drugs or machines. I suppose they were taking up scarce hospital beds, but they all struggled before eventually going.
I also witnessed an elderly lady in the next bed to my mother, looking frightened and struggling for breath as she died, while Doctors and nurses passed by with hardly a glance – the decision had been made to ‘let her go’.
Seems to me that a lethal injection would be far more humane, but then somebody has to administer it…

Tory MP Tim Yeo – “This is far too important an issue to allow the Scottish tail to wag the British dog.”
That’s the sort of talk we can’t hear enough of!

No, he’s being sincere – I presume he refers to Scottish seat MPs voting on English matters in Westminster, which would end on independence…

Al, may I ask you a sincere question ? Do you ever feel lonely ?
