Would the British economic climate be any better if the UK was overrun by the Germans in 1940?
For the Germans, certainly, but not the conquered Brits, who would have been gently encouraged to swap all their worldly goods for the odd bowl of gruel, hard graft, and some barbed wire walls.
Some parts of the UK were considered to be populated by ‘untermensch’ by the Nazis, such as the descendants of Pictish tribes on the Scottish east coast, and would have probably faired much worse than, say, the Gaels or Anglo-Saxons, whom the Germans considered their equals.
Shows how idiotic their ideology was – the Picts originally came from northern Germany and Scandinavia across the land-bridge after the last Ice-Age, whereas the Gaels were from Celtic stock migrating from the Basque area of Spain through Cornwall, Wales, and Ireland…
Been hearing these rumours for a while – could fit in with Lossie’s threatened closure announcements after the Scottish elections…
Al – I think you are reading an awful lot more between the lines than there is actually there.
Heh heh – during a news item today about the RAF Kinloss closure date, the BBC also said that “A decision on RAF Lossiemouth, and that of RAF Leuchars in Fife, will be announced after the Scottish elections on 5 May.”
Why would the Scottish elections influence the announcement date, I wonder???

Great Britain was probably still great until WW2, but was bankrupted by the huge expense of having to buy war material to keep the western world free.
The USA, naturally, took advantage of the situation, selling us and the other allies the goods, which helped them out of the Great Depression.
The USA also made sure much of the Empire was dismantled, opening up new markets which had previously been closed to them.
Realisation that Great Britain was no longer great happened during the Suez Crisis of 1956. The USA led by Eisenhower let GB and France know in no uncertain terms that they were no longer superpowers, and forced them to back down…

Doesn’t matter that it’s Ming Campbell’s seat – the Tories know full well they don’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of ever coming to power in Scotland, and the independence body is becoming larger all the time.
They’ve made up their minds that it’s time to asset-strip Scotland before we get independence, and as punishment to the Scots for hardly voting for them at all. The Tories may even want independence too – if Scotland was out of the voting equation, they would never have to worry about losing elections again – the rest of the UK might like to take some time to digest that fact…
How anyone can criticise Britain’s military operations during WW2 after so many decades is beyond me. Britain didn’t want total war, but it was forced by Nazi callousness and brutality to adopt similar tactics. In short, they asked for it, and they got it.
Harris was the right person for the job, at the right time – and the free world should have owed him, his crews, and Britain generally, a huge debt. Instead, it came out of WW2 practically bankrupt, and in a worse state financially than any of the other combatants – even Germany!
I wonder how Qinetiq are getting on with their scramjet testing?

Shame they made so few episodes, but I found Foyle’s War one of the most entertaining shows for decades…

What would modern maritime historians have thought if HMS Victory had been chopped up for firewood after the Battle of Trafalgar?
The Nimrod MRA4 fiasco cost each taxpayer in the UK around £150. Whatever replaces it will just compound that shame…

You want to watch the cyclist being beaten up ? Blimey.I’d rather see some nice fluffy kittens, anyone got any ?
Thanks BB!
Very disappointing though – I hope his cycling skills are better than his camerawork. The van driver should have been given a medal for the restraint shown in the face of such an obvious lycra Nazi…
