This Griffon rod and piston from an 8 Sqn Shackleton was straight from a busted engine (thrown rod), and was black with burned oil and combustion gases.
Many, many hours of rubbing with very fine wet n’ dry paper and then Solvol Autosol metal polish turned it into a gleaming work of art…

Forged? How in hell would you forge a piston? Cast and then machined, but not forged.

Even the factory pistons on my old Harley-Davidson are forged, not cast…

As a fellow Scot, I can fully sympathise with Murray’s reluctance.
