Hi Tom,
If you fail to find a Canadian museum to acquire an aircraft your selling, would you offer it to Canadian private collectors before offering it abroad?
Dept.of Heritage Canada, Movable Cultural Property Program offers a grant to help fund up to 50% of the purchase price for artifacts at risk of being exported from the country. The Mossie would fall under this.
On the subject of the Y2K Spit, thought some of you might be interested in these photos of TE294 being off loaded from it container after arriving in Vancouver from South Africa.
When the Spit bits arrived in Canada (Montreal), Customs “inspected” the container by extracting all of its contents and then repacking it again. The only thing not taken out was the Merlin since it was to heavy. When they repacked it, everything was basically thrown back in the container causing damage to some parts. Then they had the nerve to charge us $700 for this service!
After that, 11 more boxes of parts arrived which I picked up at the airport and was happy to see that Customs just waved them through.
Unpacking the parts I was like a kid in a candy store, never had so much fun!

7 years already! Seems like last week when Mark and I unpacked it when it arrived in Vancouver from South Africa! The progress on TE294 has been remarkable and I’m looking forward to seeing her finished.
Keep up the good work.

The ‘Boeing’ helicopter is actually a Vertol HUP-2 Retriever and think this was outside at one time.
Hi All,
The HUP-2 at Shearwater looks like the one which came from the Canadian Museum of Flight (CMF) in Langley BC. The CMF did a multi helicopter trade with Classic Rotors (http://www.rotors.org) in California where the CMF traded off their HUP-3, a Brantley a H-21 to Classic Rotors for the HUP-2 and I believe a bit of cash. Funny thing is that the CMF had one of the three remaining ex-Royal Canadian Navy HUP-3’s and the aircraft was in very good condition so I’m not sure why they traded it off. The HUP at Shearwater is an ex-US machine.

Nice website. I remember seeing XL231 at the Abbotsford International Airshow years ago here in western Canada.
Brian….
The aircraft was flown to CYKZ (Buttonville) airport a couple of weeks ago and it is being flown to CYPQ (Peterborough) very soon when the weather breaks. We are doing the import into C-reg over the winter. This bird is in fabulous AIRWORTHY condition and will be maintained that way. It is owned by a museum that will fly it for air display. I will post pix if requested. Cheers 🙂
I heard that RCAF 17072 was coming back to Canada, great news and yes, please post some pixs. Can tell us who the proud new owner is?
Thnxs!

Looks nice ! There’s also some video clips on the Goderich Aircraft website at

I believe RS700 was imported to Canada July 1956, if this is correct the Cultural Properties Import and Export Act which kicks in after 50 years. This would require it to be offered to a Canadian buyer first and they must match any offered prices, failing this, it can be exported.
This would have delayed any sale of the aircraft and my guess is that the people in Calgary seen this deadline approaching and made the move to sell it.
As to the aircraft leaving Canada, no one likes to see them go but sometimes they’re better of with someone else.

Hi Phil,
Your more than welcome to use the photos. As for the restoration, ya it’s not the best but it’s still impressive to see.
There’s more info on this aircraft on the museum’s website at http://www.canadianflight.org/collect/col_11.htm

Interesting to note that last June (2005) the wreckage of RCAF Canso 9701 which crashed Feb 12 1945 was found in the same area that the CMF Hampden was pulled out of. The Canadian Coast Guard vessel CCGS John P Tully came across it with a submersible while doing some scientific work.

Hi Phil,
Here’s a link to some photos of the Canadian Museum of Flights Hampden, taken about a year ago.

Hope this helps.

Nice photos and a beautiful aircraft! I was pleasantly surprised about a month ago to see a Sea Fury tucked away in the corner of a local hangar. I never got close enough to see which one it was but I suspect it was N60SF since it was done up in RCN colours and looked like it had the Bristol Centaurus installed.
