I can only think of the guys who at this very moment 61 years ago were just loading into Gliders and Transports, or starting their journey across the Channel in ships and landing craft, who had mere hours left to live.

Lets not forget the sacrifice made to give us the lives we enjoy today.

Sorry has to be bumped.

The calendar’s official launch will be at the American Air Museum Duxford on the evening of Thursday 23 June 2005, invited guests only. The signed limited editions are selling fast so if you would like one of those get in quick by dropping a line to facesfromtheblue@tesco.net

The two charities benefiting from the profits from the sales are:

The Mark Hanna Surgical Research Fellowship, Blond McIndoe Centre
Royal International Air Tattoo Flying Scholarships for the Disabled.

I got a text this afternoon from our man from Croydon to say the Princess had flown today but had tail wheel retraction problems. I’m sure he wouldn’t have been present with out getting his camera out. So we wait with baited breath.

Getting slightly back on topic, it’s interesting to note that of the approx 1260 VC’s awarded since it’s inception 190 (15%) have gone to Irishmen. After the English winners this is the highest number awarded to a particular nationality, the Scots come in next with 159.

In WW2 181 VC’s were awarded, 7 going to Irishmen, among those are Eugene Esmond the Channel Dash VC and David Lord who gained his at Arneham.

Despite the differences between Eire and the UK, Irishmen have never been slow to come forward to fight alongside the soldiers of their closest neighbour. Let’s not forget that there were British citizens who formed the British Free Corps to fight for the Axis cause.

They are probably now rarer than Lancasters, and a number supposedly ‘preserved’ (two at Paphos, plus one at Duxford) are on the ‘endangered’ list. I wonder how future generations will view that!

By all accounts the DX Shack is going to preserved/displayed in sections, which I find pretty odd.
