Good idea, you go poking around in the scrap yard with a long, thick stick. I’ll hide behind this stack of sand bags until the bang has subsided, any other volunteers????

The area is heavily mined and possibly booby trapped, though I believe avenues to recover these rare airframes are being investigated, it will be a while.

Ahhh yes, those sunny days of yore, I remember in the ’70s sitting in the spectator area at Southend with a bottle of coke and a bag of crisps, whilst Mum & Dad went to the bar with Grandad, watching the BAF Carvairs, Heralds and Viscounts….
BAF always did a nice line in T shirts for Kids that they sold at Southend

Your wish is my command, can’t do anything about Carvairs, but Heralds I can, but only a couple.

The old Viscount always brings back memories of being a kid and living under the flight path for Lulsgate/Bristol Airport, the mainstay of the traffic were Dan Dare, BA , as well as the bright Orange Cambrian airways Viscounts.

On top of this we were regularly treated to the Dan Dare Comet 4’s plying their trade.

Nearly 30 years later, it’s funny how the memories recalled as kid, are of, warm summers, which lasted longer and the skies being full of great sights and sounds. Am I beginning to sound like Mk12 ?

That’s because you don’t live on a small island where a cow crossing the road on its own is big new.

Guernsey has a short runway i think

4,800 ft, any longer and you’d fall off the end.

I had a look at their website last night and was tempted to leave a message asking if anyone there could shed any light on the matter. The text did mention that a lot of the staff had been there for ‘many years’. Its worth a try.

This may have been the site that I was thinking of as can plainly see the Church in the background. Perhaps the cars were just junked around the back and it was like you say a garage and not a scrapyard as I originally thought. Got to get those photos!! Martin

I’ve just had a look on Google to refresh my memory and I tend to agree with you, the Garage (Congresbury Motor Company) backs onto Church Path and obviously over looks the Church.

I’ve had a look at a map for Congresbury and there is a garage in the village that looks close enough to be the area in relation to the church as far as I can remember from looking at the photo.
But as you say its not much good without any proof.Martin

As you drive through Congresbury towards W.S.M, just after a right hand bend there was a main dealer garage on the left hand side, it use to be an MG Rover Dealership. Not sure what it is now, anyhow as far as I can recall it has never been a scrap merchant, however it was quite a large dealership and may have had crashed and damaged cars on the premises. The two scrap yards were on either side of the A370 about 1 mile to 1 1/2 miles towards Hewish.

Does anyone remember a yard at Congresbury?

I lived and grew up in the area and can recall at least 3 scrap yards, two along side the A370 Bristol to Weston Super Mare road and quite close to the village, the other one was off of the beaten track and a little way in land from the A370.

However I don’t recall any of them ever having any airframes on site, not that I spent much time around them unless I needed a part for one of my many clapped out vehicles. There were/are also a number of Caravan show rooms and sites along the same stretch of road.

Maybe 19 MU has a link to Locking or Weston Zoyland, both of which weren’t too far away from Congresbury.
