Both airlines have wanted this for some time. I’m sure it will happen eventually but it’s not yet the done deal that the Yahoo headline implies.

    From the BA intranet:

“British Airways today announced it is in talks with Iberia with a view to a merger between the two companies.

Both companies would keep their own brands and identities, each with day-to-day responsibility for the running of their operations. A new company would be formed to hold the shares in BA and Iberia.

The holding company would have a combined balance sheet and unified executive management structure built on representation from both companies.

The type of merger under consideration is known as an ‘all-share merger’, which means there would be no cash payment from either side.

Speaking from Madrid, chief executive Willie Walsh said: “The talks we are announcing today are made possible by the liberalisation of the aviation industry. They also come at an important time when the industry faces an unprecedented combination of record oil prices, economic slowdown and weak consumer confidence.

“I believe a merger would enable both our airlines to take advantage of liberalisation and grow stronger together. It would create a more financially viable airline that is better able to compete in today’s tough market environment.

“We would be able to offer our customers an improved product and service, with more destinations and better schedules.”

A merger would create the third largest airline in the world in terms of income — more than 16.5 billion euros — with the fifth largest fleet of nearly 450 aircraft.

It is anticipated that the talks with Iberia will take several months to conclude.”

Do you think i should be brushing up on my Spanish?

as per usual Joe Public will cop it in the hip pocket

I am no happier than anyone else that the cost of everything is on the up, but when it comes to flying I think we are heading into a situation where we will once again have to pay a price that realistically reflects the cost of flying.

We have had it good for some years, but can we really expect fly for £1.00 when the actual cost of flying us is many, many, many times that?

Nothing against Ryanair, I don’t like their livery and it seems we get 4-5 obligatory Ryanairs when pics are posted.

I’ve often thought the same Deano.

We don’t see that many BA Airbus pictures because “you’ve seen one BA mini-bus, you’ve seen them all.” I know they’re not very exciting but at least they now come in 3 sizes!

Of course I just live in the eternal hope that someone will eventually catch me on one of my many early morning trips to MAN. I even have a photo frame waiting for that one!

That was the same aircraft ( VH-OEE )

The nosegear door would suggest that this is VH-OJK.

    Great shots as ever GA.

I can never decide whether the 318 looks cute or rediculous!

Unusual for you to include a BA Bus in your shots. I don’t suppose you got one of 321 EUXM arriving earlier in the day did you?

I remember the 1983 incident well but I’ve never heard of this one.

    Very interesting story.

    It was a Ukranian MD80

I knew it was an MD-80something but I couldn’t think of any Russian airlines operating them. That’d be why!

Yeah, they probably didn’t have enough black people for serving drinks and meals so they had to use white people…

fantatsic facility, no hassles, love it.

Likewise from my perspective as crew working from there.

I’m not hugely pro BA management but this story started by the Unite union really annoyed me.

Having been to Barra for the first time just a few weeks ago I can tell you there is nothing scary about landing there. It’s absolutely fantastic.

I have also flown into Gibraltar and Funchal MANY times. Both are interesting but not scary.

    Who writes this tosh?
