I guess it just depends who you fly with.

Absolutely. I believe BA is the only UK airline to allow Flight Mode to be used in flight. The others as FlyMonarch rightly says have decided that it is too much hassle for crew to identify whether passengers are complying with the rules or not. When asking people who are blatantly lying about it for their own self-important benefit I often think the other airlines have it right.

As for Offline Mode I’ve never heard the term but I can only assume that it means the same. The key point is that it stops the phone transmitting or receiving.

at the moment they are just as clueless as BA with what they want!

BA have had some bad press lately, and quite rightly so, and industrial relations are at an all time low, but don’t imagine for one second that BA management don’t know what they want!

I wonder if BA will continue to pursue their A318 venture…

It still seems to be the plan.

I think (and hope!) that the fundemental difference is that for BA this accounts for a very small part of a big company. For Maxjet, Eos and Silverjet it was/is the whole operation.

This makes it much easier for BA to walk away if it doesn’t work.

    Eos airlines were doing fantatsic

I wonder on what basis you make that statement. Clearly from their current position they were not!

Have they never had A A321 in full BMI colours then?

No, the intention up until the acquisition of bmed was to dispose of the 321 fleet. This aircraft, which will become G-MEDN, is part of an order that was inherited from bmed.

I don’t like the bmi colours and the 321 hasn’t changed my mind. I quite like the 757 in partial colours though.

Nick, I’m not sure how much of what you say is what you would LIKE to happen, but I’m afraid I don’t think much of it is likely.

Firstly i dont think LH will use all of the LHR slots

LH have been quite open about wanting slots at LHR for open skies use. I think BD may be lucky to be left with any.

I also think that they will slowly close down the Eastern Side of Operations so that instead they via FRA or MUC.

And how is LH getting rid of any part of the BD network good for BD or the UK?

Also i think that LH will get onto the goverments back and hopefully in 10 years time we will have our first high speed train link between LHR and Manchester!!!

I can’t see how LH could care less about trains in the UK, or for that matter why the government would care anything for what LH thought on the subject.

Another thing i think they will do is now use MAN very wisley. I think they will expand MAN into a USA hub with most BMI flights been USA bound from MAN to places such as IAD JFK ORD YYZ and some in the caribean.

As above I think LH will use the slots for their own benefit, perhaps even pulling the longhauls to expand their own German routes.

I don’t think this is any less sad a day than when KLM bought Air UK, and I think the end result may well be the same.

I do feel disappointed however that the former ‘state’ airline is now in a completely different kind of state and that they continue to trade under the ‘British Airways’ moniker at a time when much of Britain continues to have it’s BA services withdrawn…

And I can entirely understand that disappointment, but on the name I think we just have to accept that they are NEVER going to give it up. It may be having a rough time at the moment, but it is still one of the most recognisable and respected brands in the world (although I sometimes wonder why!).

I think you make a good point re BA being the “former ‘state’ airline”. If that wasn’t the case I don’t think people would be quite so disappointed. But the fact remains that despite what many people think Britain does not have a state airline and flag carriers no longer exist. Whatever the name is it is just a name.

how long until the shuttle service get’s quango’d ?

I think it’ll be a while coming yet, but I think it IS only a matter of time. Trains are getting faster, flying (or at least an air journey) is getting slower.

Some of you know that LHR MAN is my regular route. Over the last couple of years I’ve seen the pax profile change significantly from high yield ‘business point to point’ to low yield ‘leisure connections’, a perfect example of how nothing stays the same for long in commercial aviation.

So yes, concievably a point may well arrive where BA and other airlines feel they can do better things with aircraft, slots, etc.

Operating solely out of London is just a business decision…

Absolutely right! For what it’s worth I personally think BA should have a network linking the regions with key business destinations in Europe, if not around the world. Despite various business models the regions have long been a disaster for BA, perhaps of their own making in some ways, but a disaster nonetheless. No business can afford to be in an unsuccesful marketplace, so BA has moved out. Not personal, not anti-regions, just a business decision.

I was looking forward to seeing this and have to admit to being a little disappointed. The tail logo needs to be higher and the fuselage logo lower, with both being bigger if it could be done. Let’s see what the Twotter fleet looks like when it’s painted.

FlyBe have taken over the franchise that Loganair had with BA

Will be taking over. The BA franchise remains in place until October. Could this aircraft be headed for the new flybe Dundee routes in the meantime?

One thing I did like the look of was them little ‘Pod’ things that take you from the Business car park to the terminal.

We had a skipper convinced the other day that it was the shuttle to the ‘Captains only’ car park. Some people are so gullable.

Shame it isn’t finished for the opening!

Tomorrow is my first day off so I will be nowhere near T5 or any other part of LHR.

ZB057 are you one of the many invited guests (I believe there are 90 in Club Europe) or have you booked to travel on the flight?
