I think we’ll see quite a lot of this kind of thing over the next few years, most of which I suspect will come and go quickly, some of which will work.

I know for example that VS are looking at A319’s all J Class on various routes from mainland Europe, and BA are looking at 3 class (J, W and M) B757’s from various European cities to JFK operated by a new JFK crew base.

Anyone know what these “commercial reasons” might be?

That’s what airlines call it when they can’t sell enough seats for enough money.

G-BUSH Wonder if Tony Blair Reg that aircraft?

I get asked that one by every American that boards when I fly on her. I always tell them that we had G-BUSH long before they had W.

BA’s booked load factor on the LGW DUB LGW route tomorrow (Thu) is 81.5%. Not bad really for a Thursday out of the main tourist season, although as I always say a full flight isn’t always a profitable flight.

As Shamrock says EI have tried the route before and it didn’t work but they must be confident to try it again.

I seem to recall that LON DUB is one of (if not the) biggest routes from the UK so hopefully the market at LGW is big enough for three airlines.

I believe at least one of the BA early BCAL order -100 series airplanes is already in such a state at Lasham

Two now, G-BUSD and G-BUSF have both gone to the great sardine tin factory in the sky.

Only 3 -100’s left with BA now.

and you see that great big bird sat on the ramp, oozing homeliness in that great colour scheme.

I always remember some years ago chatting to one of our Moscow regulars who hates Russia but works out there 6 weeks at a time because the money is so good.

He told me he has a particular seat in the lounge where he always sits with his G&T, eagerly awaiting the sight of the inbound BA 767 coming round the end of the building. He described seeing it as a huge hand coming to pick him up and take him home.

Amazing how people often percieve aircraft. Just shows there is still some romance left in flying.

Last rumour I heard was that they were getting x5 MD-80’s from an airline in China

I thought I’d read somewhere that the MD-80’s weren’t happening now.

Despite the gap between the delivery of this aircraft and the take-over of BCAL by BA, I don’t think that it ever flew in BCAL colours.

    Spot on.

Excellent report as ever Mark, and as ever I’m glad you enjoyed your experience with BA. By the way I’ve passed on your details so they can bill you for the broken footstool 😉

However I do face a big dilemma to get over until then: whether I can ever go back to BA First now I have discovered 62K…!

What price a little sleep for everything else a trip in First brings?

1L, perhaps if it’s the shape of a Concorde, it might well be Concorde?

    Very witty David.

To the others, thank you, especially Ian for the photo.
Looks like a lot of work went into that, but I don’t think it’ll fly.

If it doesnt work, some heads will role!

Unfortunatly Shamrock that’s not how it works at BA. If a manager cocks something up, they then spin the situation into a positive and get promoted.

we will have to wait and see what actualy happens in 6 months!

I still can’t decide whether to take leave to avoid day one, or to work so that I can see the chaos first-hand!

I hasten to start this reply by saying I don’t know for sure, but…

I was in the restaurant at the Compass Centre (LHR) the other day and two suits at my table were talking about when they started with the company as graduate trainees. Neither were older than about the 30 mark so can’t have started with the company that long ago. I guess dropping a line to BA may be worth a try.

    Good luck.

Another question for the MAN guys if I may efiste2.

When I landed the other day I saw what appeared to be a small framework in the shape of Concorde but I couldn’t quite make it out. Can anyone enlighten me please?

I cannot see any valuable effect this would have for an airline

In a area of the market where the customer is often looking for fares in single digits this gives the opportunity to save even more money by limiting what you carry to very small amounts of handluggage. What that in turn does for the airline is save money on baggage handlers and fuel, which then gives them low enough costs to be able to offer said single digit fares. At some of the fares we are now seeing loco airlines can’t really afford to include anything in the price other than the seat.

The evidence from the loco’s who have introduced this already is that it does work.

Those of us who say we would rather pay as part of the fare and have a normal check-in baggage service presumably don’t fall into the ‘just want the cheapest ticket’ part of the market.

Reckon BA are taking a bit of an ear bashing from some of their bigger customers who might use this route.

I had an interesting chat with one of our commercial guys who was telling me that WAW isn’t nearly the high yield business route that people think, being used mainly by Polish ex-pat’s and UK/US holidaymakers. The decision has therefore been made to pitch it as a leisure route and move it alongside the KRK which is already at LGW.

The reverse is true for the ALG which they believe will repeat the success of TIP when it moved to LHR. Although the load factors dropped slightly the yield went through the roof. Market research suggests the same will happen on the ALG as the high-end business customers want it at LHR.

DTW and HRE are being dropped due to lack of yield so that slots can be put to better use.

GOA has come and gone several times before so I wouldn’t be surprised if it will be summer only.
