That’ll be THE Stansted that IS in Kent then, rather than the other, lesser known one.

If I remember, it was Italian
Are you mixing up the AA A300 crash that the guys have mentioned with the light aircraft that a teenager flew into a Milan office building at around the same time, IIRC.

I wish I’d known that bmi were using the 145 on MAN LHR when I had some guy giving me grief that our A320 was ‘too small for a key business route’.
Great pictures and report by the way.

DA 727 in PMI 1991
I’m sure you’ve seen these before, but here are a few I took of a DA 727 on the ground at PMI, late Summer 1991. The last one is a lone shot of the cabin of a charter configured DA 1-11 taken at PRG , early Winter 1991.
Please excuse the quality, they are scanned from old photographs and much reduced in size to enable uploading.

We had the opposite when I went to MAN earlier this evening. We had to hold because of weather passing through, then landed in glorious sunshine.

I wonder what is the reasoning for doing a 3 + 3 + 3 seating arrangement for economy, instead of 2 + 5 + 2?
The DC10’s that BA used to fly had 2+5+2 config and it was awful. No-one wanted to sit in the centre seat. The whole boarding process consisted of people whining about having to sit there. It did in fairness feel very crowded in the centre seat. Strangely people don’t mind sitting 2 seats from the aisle if it gets them the all important window seat.
Now, about those overhead lockers in the 4th picture. Can they be retrofitted to the aircraft I work on? PLEASE!
The rest of the pictures may look very pretty, but we all know what the real cabin is going to look like on this and the A380 (and every other new design aircraft) don’t we? With the possible exception of Virgin aircraft of course.

British Caledonian had 10 DC-10-30s – G-BEBL, G-BEBM, G-BFGI, G-BGAT, G-BHDH, G-BHDI, G-BHDJ, G-DCIO, G-MULL, G-NIUK – plus two DC-10-10s G-BJZD and G-BJZE. At least one of the -30s was second hand – one came from Ariana Afghan Airlines for sure – and the two -10s came from Laker when Laker collapsed. The rest were new build.
Two were sold – G-BFGI and G-BGAT, and the two -10s were transferred to Cal-Air/Novair. The other eight were aquired by BA when B.Cal was bought by BA. They remained based at LGW until they were disposed of. They mainly operated on the former B.Cal routes ex LGW to the USA (e.g. IAH, SFW, ATL, SAN/LAX), to South America and to a limited extent to Africa.
I flew on several of them in BA service – to ATL and from SAN to LGW via LAX. They were great airplanes to fly on – always seemed slightly more comfortable than the 747s – and the crew were mainly ex-B.Cal people who seemed to be just that little bit more friendly.
All eight BA DC-10s were converted to freighters, and most are still flying including with DAS Air Cargo, Gemini Air Cargo and Centurian Air Cargo.
Andy
I agree with everything you say Andy except
and the crew…seemed to be just that little bit more friendly
Not sure when you took your DC10 flights, but I flew at Worldwide LGW for a couple of years in 94/95 and I’m afraid the one thing the crew were not was friendly!

and the airlines were all ‘propoer’ airlines!!!
Do you mean they weren’t loco’s? Interesting to reflect how the industry has changed in the decade and a half that have passed since that footage was shot.

Thanks Oneleft, I wasn’t entirely sure if they’d gone into brief B-Cal service having seen pics like that before…
No, strangely the A310’s did but weren’t kept by BA, the A320’s didn’t and were!

Although never delivered to BCal, the first couple were painted in their livery.

lets stop the bitchiness and all get along
I think this statement could be applied to a number of threads recently. We have become quite an intolerent bunch of late. Intolerent of some newcomers to the forum from the outset, and intolerent of stupid questions in particular. Well as the saying goes, there’s no such thing as a stupid question, but there are stupid answers.
If someone asks what we think is a daft question, would it not be more in the spirit of learning and sharing to explain why it’s daft rather than simply attack, as is becoming the norm?

Wouldn’t have thought they are actually at 3L. More likely being (or been) used to look at something on the wing.

I quite like that picture, looks a bit moody.
How about this one for a wet day even by Manchester standards, although I was nice and dry inside the aircraft cabin. The second picture was, believe it or not, later the same day.

Have you ever operated into Aberdeen?
Oh yes, many times, probably hundreds of times over the years. I use the roster system we have to bid mainly for domestic flying. I mostly operate MAN flights but often do ABZ as well.

Tom, your purser on the LHR ABZ sector, Celcily, is a friend of mine. She’ll be delighted by your comments I’m sure. Glad you enjoyed your BA flights.
