Oddly enough, I’ve spoken to them, and they seem to be very switched on. Good project, good guys. Incidently, as far as I am aware, this is not the original team – the first project hit development issues a couple of years ago. This team seem to have solved the issues.
Just registered and had a quick flick through the site – its pretty good, but focuses on pilots manuals more than tech stuff which is my interest. That said, I will be downloading the Stearman set (A long term aim of mine is to build one… I just need the bucket of bits….)
The site COULD be expanded and vastly improved upon to kill off these muppets who think that they can charge 5K for a set of manuals….
As I have said many times before, 603 was to be parted out. The cockpit was alledgedly going to another Vulcan runner for procedures training, 319 was to benefit from access panels and cosmetic items, Several other Vulcan owners were to benefit from bits and pieces too. Find Andrew Darlington at BAe Systems Woodford, and ask him what the state of play is. He was the original taker of requests.

Would there be public support? The majority of the public (ie. where you would get your money from) would not know what a Shackleton was. Maritime patrol aircraft don’t have the appeal of a big triangular bomber or a Lancaster or spitfire…..
I’d love to see one in the air again, but you need what I need with my project – a very rich person with a passion for aviation. There are almost no public funds available for anything, let alone ‘another’ historic aeroplane – especially one which will be difficult to market…
Engineering wise, its possible but as you’ve said, will be expensive. What’s the CAA’s view on it?
Aircraft designed purely for flying training in the RAF? Not many. Avro Tutor, Tiger Moth, JP, Tucano, the usual suspects……
Aircraft used for training – almost every aircraft built…. even Tornado had twin stick versions….
Just to clarify here… are we talking about ab initio trainers and advanced training aircraft only, or are we to include type training, gunnery training, etc?
Not a photo…. RAF Morpeth

its a shame nothing can be done at the moment for this glorious building
its Hylton Castle for anyone thats interested
Scott… keep up with the times! The Friends of Hylton Castle are progressing well with refurbishment plans which will benefit both the historic aspects of the castle and the local community. These plans essentially boil down to a visitors’ centre within the castle itself, including the re-fitting of its roof and floors. When I last spoke to one of the members, the plan was to have very modern interior fittings which reflect the original walls and floors in location and size only. The centre will be filled with local history items, especially relating to the Hylton Family.
The chapel is to be fully refurbished too and should be able to hold weddings and other related ceremonies for the first time in a century or two.
For those who are at all interested, the castle was (sort-of-recently) used as a school for boys… the most famous resident was a certain Joseph Swan, who went on to form a little company with Thomas Eddison… certainly an Illuminated business decision…..
Alledged ghost stories seem to revolve around the ‘Cauld Lad’, said to be a stable boy who was accidently killed by one of the Baron Hyltons. (The stables were located where the former Doctors surgery stood (soon to be housing). Having organised and conducted several ghost tours of the grounds, and done some very in-depth research, the Cauld LAd sightings are myth…. the spirit was laid to rest in the mid 1800’s when clothes were left out for it. (It was a sprite… google it). The single gravestone in the grounds (close to the entrance and looks like a small standing stone) is a grave marker for one of the Baron’s favourite horse.
Fascinating place…

One of those JPs is probably XM419, which moved to Saints when Halton closed to the apprentices, then up to Newcastle Aviation Academy.
