    Vulcan Update

The A.A.P.P. was removed today with minimal fuss. As per normal, the other guys should be able to provide photo’s – mainly of me with a very worried look. Thanks to Storm Aviation (Brett) for lending a hand, and of course we drafted in the boss and his truck… and several other members for this particularly iffy engine drop. Its out anyway, and no-one was killed.:D

The AAPP bay is very clean with almost no corrosion, just a mountain of flaky paint. Next week, the plan is for me to work on the F86D, and the Vulcan team to fit the remaining spine panels ready for the winter.

Ask Millom if they would part with the fuselage they have stored at North East Aircraft Museum. Be warned – transporting a large aircraft like that is a big financial headache! I speak from experience.

    Vulcan update 28 September 2008

As promised, here’s this week’s installment:

During my absence over the last few months, the fake John has got a job fixing 737’s in Ireland, and several other team members have come and gone. Chris, Grant and Michael have been the backbone (in some cases, the only bone!) in the team and have been steadily plugging away at the corrosion removal in preparation for the long awaited re-paint.

319 is now considerably lighter having the majority of the underside manually stripped to bare metal, alochromed, and etch primed – removing all of the oxidisation which has occured since 1982. She looks, as all aircraft do during restoration, multi-coloured – a mix of faded grey paint, green etch primer and orange alochrom………

Visitors are being charged £1 to get into the cockpit, and this has been the main source of funding.

The latest news is that there is a chance that 319 will make noise again – currently we are removing the a.a.p.p. for overhaul. While it is away, we will be looking at the 28V DC circuits (lights, etc) and the bomb bay hydraulics. We have a huge task ahead – alot of the AC system has been chopped. Contactors have been removed by cutting the cables (I would assume they are fitted to a different type of V-bomber right now…). It MAY be possible to isolate the majority of the electrical systems and only use the Rover to power up limited hydraulics and the cockpit instruments. Quite how much work will need to take place for that to happen remains to be seen. I’m imagining alot….

We need more dedicated volunteers to help us through the winter. All we can offer is hot drinks and good banter in exchange for hours of cold hard toil….

Generally, NEAM is moving ahead with its re-generation. Its well worth a visit to see the changes.

I’m sure Chris or Michael will post some pictures.

    Thats all for now.

Immediately behind the bomb bay doors there is a panel, approx 18″ x 8″ which was part of the BS mod… apparently.

With XL319, the bomb bay itself reveals the most clues, from stencills declaring that ‘tampering with ‘these’ wires will result in the release of the missile’, to the mounting points for the missile itself. There should also be an ‘arming’ panel in the cockpit which will be different to non BS aircraft.

Personally I’ve never looked at every Vulcan in the country to see if they ALL have BS capability. I would have thought that they would since the B2 was designed from the outset to carry it with only reletively minor MODs to convert it to a conventional bomber…..

it was the ever greens, thanks for the help, now for the second question…does anyone have any information/images of WL181 in her display team livery?

Evergreens. Ray was team leader and possibly flew 181 when she was the lead ship in the team. Your own archives have a picture of her. Standard camo pattern with a large dayglo section covering the nose – sweeping curves too – very nice. If she was Ray’s aircraft, when you CAREFULLY peel back the paint close to the cockpit, you might find the remains of Ray’s mascot motif…. Gus Gus – the fat mouse from Disney’s Cinderella. Sarah Hanna was going to look through her dad’s log book for me earlier in the year, but must have slipped her mind. I could always give her another call.

This is the only twin engined fighter aircraft to have gone under the Tyne. (back of a truck via the Tyne tunnel from Acklington)

absolutly awesome sight john…it was in fact chris who emailed the crew at least 7 times in the last 48 hours lol

and the roumour mill’s latest is that the cane is sitting under an XL 737 as there was no storage space for it..it had some sort of fault?

I’ll see if its still there tomorrow. We could probably put it in our hangar.

Vulcan (very low) heading south east over Sunderland from Nissan towards the town centre at about 13.30. Nice sight apparently! (I didn’t see it). Did you have a word with the aircrew, Mr. Marlee?

By the way Scott, I didn’t see the alledged Hurricane at NCL on Friday. Chris will know though. He lives by the fence.

Spotted a Griffon engined Spitfire at about 1500 ft heading due north over Newcastle Airport at about 12 ish. No doubt on the way to Leuchars.

Ten minutes later, NCL’s resident Jet Provost T3 took off and turned north. Possibly going to the same place (well, I didn’t see it come back anyay…)

Boring by some standards on here, but damn rare in this part of the country – two classics in one day! 😀

U/c NDT already? If so, roll on winter maintenance when it gets replaced!

As for being outdoors – she spent the majority of her life outdoors. I’m sure a few nights in the rain won’t hurt.
