I’ve heard some rumours (some contradictory) about GA aircraft. LAMS is being phased out and will be replaced by an EASA licence category. With this in mind, the pay rate should become higher for GA licenced engineers WITH the EASA pt66 qualification.

Just to hammer a couple of points home – apprenticeships are virtually impossible to get, don’t pay, and don’t get you a licence.

To get a licence without taking four years of your life away (2 years at an academy, 2 years RELEVANT aircraft experience) there is only one route to go:
Get a job (simple… haha) with an EASA part 145 company – there is a list on the CAA website somewhere! While you are working, enrol on a licence by post course. After at least 5 years you’ll get your licence and you’ll have been working and earning money. Providing you have worked on aircraft over 5700Kg, registered in Europe with an EASA 145 airline!

Last point, just for your general info – aircraft experience is very hard to get while in training at an academy, however most have at least one airframe to play with. Generally you’ll do u/c retracts, control rigging, basic stuff.

    CoBC – Learjet
    Northbrook – Jetstream 200
    Hartlepool – Jet Provost T5
    Newcastle Aviation academy – 737-200, Jetstream 200 (+fuse), Jet Provost T3 (x2), and more to come…..

I know there are many more places with working aircraft, but I can’t remember them all off hand! More suggestions welcome….

There’s not much runway left. Lots of taxiways though….

no info on there, but I’ve registered and asked the same question….

I have also e-mailed Hendon’s archives concerning the plans, but their replies can take 20 days or more.

The plans references are: Morpeth 1385/50 (airfield) & 1386/50 (dispersed site)

There are several Aviation Academys which provide EASA pt66 B1 licence training, but I’ll use Newcastle Aviation Academy as an example since its local to me, I’ve been a student there… oh, and I teach there now….

The usual route is as follows:

Newcastle College Aerospace course – BTEC, C&G, PEO qualifications over a 2 year course, mechanically biased. Module structure following the EASA Pt 66 A licence standard. Entry requirements are 4 GCSE’s in Maths, English, Science and any other, OR relevant experience, OR a suitable pass in a lower level lead in course (run by the college). ‘A’ licence pt147 accreditation is being sought.

    followed by:

Newcastle Aviation Academy – EASA pt147 – run by Kingston Uni, CoBC, and Newcastle College. 2 year Foundation degree course, module stucture as previous, but to EASA pt66 B1 standard. Exams at the end of each module for both FD and pt66. 95% attendance requirement, 40% pass mark for FD, 75% pass mark for pt66. Includes 10 week OJT at a pt 145 maintenace company. Entry requirements – same as any university – the correct number of UCAS points, OR relevant previous experience. (Graded by induction test and interview – A level engineering should suffice).

    Followed by:

Minimum 2 years relevant experience on aircraft over 5700kg within an EASA pt145 maintenance company.

As a former student of the latter course, I can happily say that it is the hardest course you will ever do. Following 7 years in the RAF, experience on aircraft ranging from Bristol 188 to Boeing 747, I still struggled. It must take over your life.

There is no easy way into licenced engineering. The RAF route will not lead to a licenced career, although there are rumours that Waddington, Cranwell and Brize can offer pt 145 experience. Generally speaking, military aircraft do not count towards the required experience.

    Good luck

From what I understand she needs a minimum of 6000 feet and duxford isn’t even close as far as I know, also you have to take into account runway strength and I’ve read on the VTTS forum that the runway wouldn’t take her weight.

If you could land a Vulcan at Usworth (in 3/4 of the runway length), and at several other tiny strips, then anything is possible. 558 is the preverbial racing snake of Vulcans now.

Anyway, I’ve heard she’ll be retiring to a museum north of Newcastle and south of Alnwick 😉 Never let the truth get in the way of a good rumour.

Bardolf tools should stock them. Give Cromwell Tools (Bardolf’s UK agent) a ring – 0191 487 3000 (ask for Paul Stewart and mention its a tip off from Newcastle College). I think Team Valley should be closest to you, and they should be ble to find them IF they are still being made by anyone. It might help if you can get a part number.

Have you tried LAS? Light Aero have a stock of tooling and sometimes have older stuff.

Bet Air Atlantique have some knocking about — perhaps for a small donation?

…..at present she’s stopping where she is. She is ‘safer’ at the mo

There are no plans to relocate, ………..

    ………….
Other than that there are no plans that I know of.

There’s nothing to worry about 😉

mostly right. She is safer where she is for now, and there are no IMMEDIATE plans to move her 😉

Its relevance is besides the point in this post – a truely amazing job has been done by the restoration team at RAFM Cosford. Its a shame it could not have been left there for a few months so local people could see what has been done. Well done Cosford – you know who you are!!!

    Bump!

Plus we still need Jetstream bits –

    Stbd wingtip light,
stbd side cabin sound proofing and trim,
Spare panels, nuts, bolts, screws, etc.

Also one tiny thing – we had to cut our main wiring looms at the wing root – a new one would be good……:o

Dispite the fact that I’m named in the Lancaster manual, I’m actually dissapointed with both the Lanc and the Spitfire manuals. I would have liked to see more technical information regarding the aircraft – more like the car versions. I’m probably on my own here, but I really don’t feel that full value was achieved with either of them. Sorry.:(
