Not heard that the Gannet at Newark actually ran, lots of opinions around that one here, and the one at Sandtoft a few years ago (although that was a potential flyer project at the time i think), anyone know for sure if either were coaxed into life ?
Seems like Newcastle may be the place to see some action next year, albeit behind closed doors by the sounds of it, damn !
The list is growing nicely !
Just instructional airframes I’m afraid. We won’t be able to run the engines on any of our aircraft, but we will maintain them as if they were runners. Who knows what will happen when we are finished with them – kept indoors, mint condition….:D
Jet Provost T3’s XM355 and XM419 at Newcastle College. Currently stored awaiting a new hangar. They will be returned to fully operational condition by September next year, and joined by another fully operational classic.
At the same place is Boeing 737-200 C-GWJO, formerly Westjet’s Oscar the Grouch. She is alive and well, fully working except for the engines. The APU is fired up occasionaly . Training aid for Newcastle Aviation Academy.
At NEAM, Gazelle G-BAGJ is being returned to running condition. Estimated completion of summer 2008.
Nash
Lets just say it shouldn’t have hapenned, credit to NEAM for the work they are doing there but from a purists point of view its just wrong.
Before everyone condems me for my point of view, just see the reaction you would get if you painted a Spitfire the wrong shade of green!.
John.
I agree from a purists point of view it is wrong, however our reasons are thus:
Our lightning is a Saudi varient, and as such we cannot justify having the aircraft in the collection. Hence the repaint to represent a UK type.
As a Binbrook aircraft, holding QRA for the north of England, we can justify it by linking it to RAF Boulmer (control + scopies)
The aircraft is to become an external display, and would die very quickly in a natural metal finish – again, hence the repaint.
We get very few enthusiasts through the gates, and so very few people who will be able to tell the difference. Our history file on the aircraft is swollen with images and reference material should the original Saudi scheme be re-applied, and we can still provide tracability to that airframe’s history.
If anyone has a complete F6 from XI(F) sqn or Binbrook, which they would like to exchange for our Saudi Example (must be in similar condition) then I am all ears.
By the way -as it stands, this will be our ONLY non-original paint job. The general policy is to keep the aircraft in a paint scheme they once wore. We are incredibly lucky to have the Sabre Knights F86D and a Meteor which was based at RAF Acklington AND was part of the Evergreens display team at Manby. For the Meteor, we have the opportunity to tell the story of Acklington and Display teams through the ages…
Kindest regards, etc etc,
LL (Projects manager at NEAM)
Bex must be on holiday….:D
Put the TV on mute and just watch the aeroplane……… awesome….:D
… but will you all be at legends?……..
coat, hooks, door… etc…..:D
Hi Peter,
Next, the major strip-down of BBMF Lancaster at Coventry during the winter months to a knock-out standard that will allow us all to watch it for many more hours to come.
It was a nightmare but very eye-opening.
I’m out, sorry all. The XL319 roadshow will not be in attendance….
Robert and Richard Taylor are Father and son……:D
I concur – Aces High have a good reputation, and if I had the available cash, they are who I would go to.
OR you could buy an original from me, (painted by me)…. I’m no Robert Taylor, but also have a look on the forum’s virtual art gallery to see what we have available on here!
Photo bucket test – and finally the updated pics!
lightning fin work

Grey lighting (primer)
Karl’s Auster diorama
Almost complete Bloodhound mk 1
Bomb disposal diorama
A very blue link trainer
NEAM’s hidden Chipmunk and a JP wing belonging to Newcasle College (XS180)
You are more than welcome to take ours – its crap.
It contributes to more accidents on the A1 than anything else.
“Look Dear, there’s the Angel of the North…. Damn, I’ve just driven into a truck”……..
It also resembles a Nazi symbol… something to do with either Lufthansa or the Luftwaffe. I’ve seen it on a propoganda poster from the late 1930’s….
LL (less than 2 miles from the Angel of the North)
Love the Spitfire idea though….
this is where we get into fights over ‘preserving’ and ‘restoring’. Two distincly seperate kinds of living history…
To me a ‘preserved’ aircraft would have to be un restored. Half of the Me 109 display at Duxford (the crash diorama) is preserved, the other half restored.
The Halifax at Hendon, for the most part is preserved, whereas the Battle will be restored, not preserved.
The FAAM’s Corsair is preserved…. the airworthy warbirds are restored.
PA474 has been a mix of both. The airframe has been continually maintained, but never re-built, so technically has been preserved, but actually has been restored in a rolling restoration scheme.
AGGGHHHH my head is about to explode.
I know;) We are planning some road trips (XL319 tour or Newcastle College business trips) so we may yet arrange to visit.
Finally, another update
Well, where do I start?
First off, apologies to my regular viewers for the delay – we have been quite busy recently!
The management structure has been completely revised, and now includes a Project Manager in charge of all the restorations and displays, followed by team leaders in charge of individual restorations. For example, the Vulcan guys are under direction of their team leader (me), and I report to the Projects Manager (also me!):D So far we have 5 separate teams and enough people to make another one. With this set up, we can make far better use of our limited man power and everyone has a job to do whatever day of the week they turn up!
Right update time:
Vulcan news: None. It rained at the weekend, but the sheet metal repairs are on going, and from now on, when it rains, they will be concentrating on the cockpit. I hate winter.
Lightning news: The stub fin is almost off! having cut out the skin, all that is left is a few frames – they can now get to the bolts, which is making life a little easier. Work continues apace with the aircraft now in its undercoat (grey!), completely weather sealed with the exception of the spine, cockpit and jet pipes. The spine repairs are being progressed with the help of Newcastle Aviation Academy / City of Bristol College. The electrical conduit panels along the fuselage are also being replaced.
Gazelle news: Lots of it. We now have 2.5 Gazelles…. The first, G-BAGJ is progressing well on its way to running status, parts are being removed from the second Gazelle, former XW666 which crashed in a big way. We have the pod, and the guys are removing all of the electrical looms, hyd systems, brackets, and anything else. The third Gazelle is being renovated for the Army, with a view to use it as a gate guard by them. That is the joy of mutual help – we get lots of support, they get a nice heli! (XX380 – Royal Marines).
Other news: We were host to various VIPs regarding our future recently, so we have had to put on a couple of extra displays – Karl Edmondson’s Auster is currently set up in a WWII field ops situation, complete with camo nets, scramble bell, manequin and ops hut. We also have a Bomb disposal diorama, courtesy of the bomb disposal guys!
We are updating the stock in the shop to include NEAM monikered items – from fridge magnets to mugs, etc. There will be some big movements fairly soon on the display side, since a new office will be built; the archive room renovated; display cabinets moved, built, re-stocked; Space generated by careful re-shuffling of the displays; and finally, moving some of the exhibits moved outside. We are chronically over crowded, and something has to give. One of the next projects is to weatherproof the comet nose section, and build a stand for it outside. We are formulating a collection policy, and for now, that aircraft does not have a place with us. My priority list is as follows:
Vulcan
canberra
Lightning
Whirlwind
Gazelle(s)
Comet
followed by various small displays such as the Link trainers.
Finally, there are no pics because I’ve run out of room! I’m going to work out how to use fotobucket or something similar…….
