Jeeps and Jets 2007
What a good weekend! Hopefully this event will be a regular (annual) thing!
Thank you to all who attended from exhibitors to visitors.
My rough guess for visitors would be upwards of 1000 people per day. We showed the Vulcan cockpit to well over 200 people per day, hundreds of guide books sold (nearly sold out!) and hundreds of raffle tickets sold for the Jet Provost and Chipmunk flights – again, thank you to the organisers of those flights.
The 1940’s dance held at the Nissan Sports hall was a huge success too – packed to the brim!
Here’s just a couple of pics – one of the general view down the main strip on Sunday, and a picture of the Bofors gun crew getting into the spirit of the event.
My personal stars of the show were the Air Cadets from Hexham having stripped, primed, painted, repaired, moved, set up, and operated the Bofors gun – all in the space of a few frantic days! It was quite some sight to see it in its own revetment complete with dummy rounds. The re-enactors who also manned the gun diserve special credit IN MY OPINION for their display too..
Thanks again to EVERYONE!!!!:D 😀 😀
Did you like the new non slip floor? I removed the old stuff……
It’s surprisingly cramped inside, isn’t it? At least it is if your a bit wide around the midriff, like me! I couldn’t quite get into the cockpit over the wings root box (my brain has decided it isn’t going to tell me what that’s called).
the rear spar is bad enough, but try going over the front spar when the battery table is removed along with the batteries, and the forward cover is removed exposing the lovely wingnut on the cable conduit which is strategically placed to cause mischief…
I think the swiss were the last to phase out hunters in the 80’s weren’t they guy’s? not bad going for a design 30-40 years old
I suppose the RAF are the last military user – leasing HHA’s fleet…. 😀
we have our Hunter cockpit open this weekend, so come up to North East Aircraft Museum and have a play! Failing that, I’m sure most hunter owning museums would let you dribble over their hunters if you asked.
is that advertsing?……..
Ray Hanna’s involvement with The Evergreens has been confirmed, but the original request still stands – any information / pictures on the team?
Pilot list?
Groundcrew?
Display routine?
Places where they displayed?
etc.
Still looking for a high res shot of WL181 – was she allocated to any particular pilot or were the jets flown by anyone? We know 181 was the lead aircraft..
one would assume the last real aircraft carrier, broken up in the 80’s….
you don’t half go on…………….and on and on and on and….:D
JRXL319 you have been PM’d…. Given that we have Real Dave and Jelous Dave at the academy, which one of us is the real John? Are we both the real John providing that one of us is at the academy and the other is at the museum? I think my head is about to explode….:D
At least he forecast a good weekend, rather than it being ‘dreek’ which seems to be his favourite word!
What’s the opening times for the J&J weekend?
Simon
10 AM til 5PM for the open day, and the dance hall should be available from late afternoon (4ish) through til last orders at 11PM
It was a bit dreek today, and blowey.
Sea Kings are particularly prone to wet starts too. Best seen on a night scramble – a helecopter with afterburners… awesome.
Update 5 September 2007
Where do I start?
THANK YOU to ITV Tyne Tees ‘NorthEast Tonight’, from Newcastle, who have sent their erstwhile weatherman, Bob Johnson to do his daily feature on us today.
The romney shed has been cleaned and its contents shuffled about – visitors to the J&J weekend will be able to see in our Alladin’s Cave storage area. Several cockpits are open – Hunter, Vampire and Vulcan will be accessable, with the canopies open on the F84, and Mystere. (and F86, T33, from tomorrow….)
The Bloodhound has all of its markings except the roundels on now, and the Bofors gun is green!…. The corrossion in the tail of the lightning is being sorted.
I found all kinds of stuff in the storage area – from a Halifax fuel tank (undamaged) to a Double Mamba! Obviously, none of this stuff was lost, but it is now visible….
Jeeps and Jets is THIS WEEKEND. Be there !
😀 😀 😀
tip profile doesn’t match, although the hub end shape is better.
I had a wet start on a Tornado F3 APU.
good fun. By the time I’d given the ‘fire’ signal, the aircrew were legging it. Odd, since the ladders had already been removed…. never seen two guys move so quickly! (The fire was well established – normally wet starts just blow themselves out…) damn.
Thanks very much from the Vulcan Restoration Trust for letting us swap one of our damaged fuel filters for one from XL319. It turned out to be in better condition than all our spares; it looked as good as the ones that had recently been overhauled. Not bad for 24 years standing still.
Thanks again, good to see all the progress.
THANK YOU for managing to get the access doors open 😀
Glad 319 could be of service. Now at least you can see WHY we have to save her – the outside is knackered, but the inside is factory fresh!
DON”T DROP THAT ONE STEVEN !!!! 😀 😀
