there was half a dozen of us in today!

The DH Dove wings were moved out of the display hangar and are now under the F100 in storage along with the tailplane and rudder – the fuselage was already in the storage hangar.

The outer wings have been taken off the Pucara ready for its trip outside in two weeks.

A plan has been formulated for the Canberra to move forward out of the way of the display hangar door so we can extract the Pucara!

The Brown Helecopter has been moved into the Lamella hangar out of the way

More Lightning work has taken place – quite what, I don’t know….

The F86D will have to be polished on the stbd side and rubbed down and polished on the port side before the markings can go on – that task was started today…

And finally, we have a CARE AND MAINTENANCE airframe!!!! The Mystere is complete!!! 😮 One down, 35 to go………

I forgot about the Vulcan cos its so far from the hangar….. and dispite ‘leading ‘ the team, I haven’t touched the thing yet…..

As for the daily updates – I hope it helps someone, somewhere in seeing what can be done in a set time scale; advertises our position (i.e. broke:D ); and when we make mistakes, or are about to, then you lovely people can correct it before the boss finds out….;)

I’m back in tomorrow AND monday! Its great being a contractor – work all winter, then have a holiday until the money runs out….!

I just found out today that we have a piece of the R100 airship…. I know Elvington has a bit – who else?

‘Lindy’s’ condition, and that of the Brunty Victor are well docuymented on this forum – out of fatique life, well and truely. Strip to components, NDT the spars, possibly replace the spars, then work on all the other systems which us volunteers have messed with for years.

The only chance of a ‘complex’ aircraft to fly now is if a complete restoration was carried out with the design authority, OEMs and an EASA 145/part M compliant company running it. Sea Vixen ‘Foxy Lady’ being the exception to the rule since it already has a permit, and 558 soon to be flying. I can’t think of any complex aircraft (Lightning, Bucc, Phantom, etc, which has been maintained in a ‘just out of service’ condition, hangared, with Licenced engineers at the helm, and everything documented – unless the QRA Lightning guys at Brunty have done those things.

HHA’s buccaneer is a possibility because of their eminent position as an EASA compliant company, but nothing from the world of ‘preservation’ will fly unless a complete re-build can take place.

On the subject of Tornado’s – possibly one could fly, but we would have to wait until they were all retired and classed as non-effective. 2011 for F3’s was what I’ve been hearing, just for retirement. If someone was to have the foresight of Mr. Walton and buy an F3, all the support gear they could get, some engines (ALOT of engines)… then just maybe….

UK Phantom – no way, not enough spares
US Phantom – sure, providing that SALT II doesn’t get in the way and a good airframe is plucked from Nevada….
Javelin – no spares, and a dodgy safety record (plus complete re-build)
Lightning – possibly, if the CAA can get over the bad safety record and other well documented problems with a return to flight of a lightning
Jaguar yes, if someone acts NOW and gets the recently retired ones at Cosford (CanopenerAl’s masterpiece) AND all the still servicable spares….
Gannet Best chance is the one stuck at Goose Bay….
    Swift no spares
Harrier ha ha ha pull the other one, its got bells on. TOO COMPLEX

can’t think of any more for now…….:D

Certainly not by air! I can’t imagine anyone moving Lindy – the cost alone would be too great – splitting at the transport joints etc.

Several years ago, there were rumours and speculation that the airshow would move, but that came to nothing. Personally, I can’t see either of the things you mention happening. The airshow is VERY popular, and is the only airshow on an airfield in the north of England (anywhere south of the M62 is SOUTH…and Sunderland’s show is not exactly brilliant given that the display line is half a mile out to sea….)

edit – sorry, forgot about breighton show – no big landing stuff though….

Gents I feel airshow attendances may increase next year including yours truly who has not attended an airshow for about 10 years, well there has not been much to go and see till now. Get the earmuffs out Blodwen.

    Paul

I agree with the attendance thing… I’m still trying to convince the missus that she really wants to attend some big airshows next year just to see 558. I’ve drowned her in YouTube clips, and TVOC forum vids… I think she’s coming round to the idea….

Can’t wait to see her fly (558, not the missus….), and that howl sends shivers down the spine… I remember the last Finningly display – awesome!

Weird considering most aircraft spend their entire lives outside….

As an aside (Hijacking my own thread) – Bruce, did you get the Lancaster pics I sent, and were they any good?

The Leeming Javelin has some bits missing I think – not sure about the engines!….. The last Leeming Phantom is now in a hangar awaiting the scapman’s torch… XI(F) Sqn’s Lightning was complete and kept in potentially taxiable condition. It was a running joke to get new linies to ‘BF the Lightning’

    25 august 2007

    Another busy day!

My estimates for the Mystere completion were a little optimistic – one more day!

The ‘Sabre Knights’ name has appeared on one side of the F86D for the first time since the 1950’s……. It needs a second coat, but its a start.

The Hunter was cleaned today and looks nice and shiney

Hangar 1 was opened up again completely showing the lightning to one and all, and while it was open, the Bofors gun was wheeled out and jet washed in preparation for the primer (estimated thursday delivery). Time is tight to make Jeeps and Jets…..

The pylons for the Pucara were removed ready to remove the outer wings, and be pushed outside for the J&J weekend….

The Vulcan MLG are continuing to be stripped, treated and primed – we now have the paint to do the u/c legs….(Paint on next week for those bits!)

Still looking for someone to tackle the Canberra!!!! (Failing that, I’ll do it next year….)

We potentially have a supplier, its just the actual specs we need…. I really don’t want to paint it the wrong colour – that would be mildly embarasing:o

LIndy – what is the status of some of the other projects with the museum i.e Anson , Jet Provost and Chipmunk ?

The Anson and JP are privately owned, and the owner has not done anything for a long long time. The JP is dissassembled and in the back of the working hangar, and the anson is, for now in the display hangar, looking as it has done for as long as I remember (10 years or so). It will be moved into the romney shed in due course – out of the display hangar to allow us to DISPLAY aircraft as opposed to work on them.

The Chippie is at Newcastle College on loan, so I don’t know what is happening to it…. alledgedly being restored by a lecturer in his free time…

Anyone heard of the Whitleys and halifax buried just behind HAS 1 (the old XI(F) Sqn site) at Leeming? Alledgedly they were just pushed in when they were stuffed down onto the runway a bit hard….

    update 24 August 2007

I don’t think we have made contact with the pilot. In fact, someone insisted that was the name of the squadron just the other day…..:p

Update time! (again), but no pics….

The Mystere saga is almost done with most of the emergency markings applied today – everything is hand painted, cos we don’t have any stencills… She will be completed tomorrow!

The Hunter has has a fresh coat of paint on its nose leg, with the mains and doors to follow. Next for this aircraft is again, stencills, and a good wash!

The Lightning was progressed some more with more rubbing down, bolts removed, and generally prepped for paint. And the hangar which houses it has its doors open for the first time in years. Took us an hour and a half to open 4 doors, and five minutes to close them again.

We now have a new sign (again made by us) to put opposite the gate just to let people know we exist – you’d be amazed at the number of people who drive right past up the dead-end lane because the gateway is shielded by hedges….

Not bad for just two of us today…… 😎
