She was with 617 longer… plus the 35 Sqn camo was satin / matt which will fade like nobody’s business outside. Gloss is the way ahead. You are not the first to mention a 35 sqn scheme…… whats so special about 35?
Work begins!
yes I was just being blind. It says ‘Entrance’…….
Right, news!!!!
The first picture is located under the nav rad bench…
Work today focused on tidying the area a bit more (grass is completely cut now, and the gravel is almost gone! Hard graft works wonders…
The jet pipes were inspected for damage over the years, and have proved to be the most durable part of the aircraft. Aside from golf balls (!), stones, sticks and a nappy (soiled), no damage or corrosion was apparent. The No.s 1 and 2 turbines spin feely, but the 3 and 4 are seized.
The no.1 jet pipe end cap was removed today – the photos show the reason! The other 3 will come off over the weekend. Scrap sadly. Lets just hope we can source some better ones. 603’s are the wrong type…
The future colour scheme has changed while I’ve been sat here. I think we will go for the 1970 scheme (gloss camo as before), but the TFR nipple was fitted as 617 converted the aircraft from Blue Steel to conventional bombing. We still need the smooth fin cap… (more on that in a second!).
Next weeks jobs are:
Remove the jet pipe end caps
remove and restore the access ladders and repaint the entrance door inner surface.
Build the scaffold tower and seal the cockpit
We should be able to secure the Gloss white and Medium sea Grey paint, but we are having difficulty in getting the appropriate shade of green – any ideas where we can get some cheap?
We will be painting her this year! starting asap with the drip strip application, painting the nose, followed by the upper then lower surfaces of the wing. The fin and spine will remain as they are until the repairs can be carried out (copious amounts of re-skinning).
We have received a letter today from Mr. Darlington at BAe systems, and our request for parts (lots of… including the fin cap) from 603 has been added to their work schedule. It looks like 319 will be saved as a result of 603’s sad demise. Our thanks to Mr. Edmondson at TVOC and Mr. Darlington at BAe Systems.
In the photos we also have a shot of the scanner, a view out of the jet pipe, the No1 turbine face, and a picture of 319 being towed by a giant wrecking truck across Usworth airfield to her home on the tennis court way back in 1983……
Very nice…. I’ll swap you a DH Dove for it……………;)
Andy, which Kidney would you like?…. Any idea what the writing is under the badges? (or am I just blind…?)
I am hoping that the original markings are under the grey paint and we WILL be taking it slowly just to see….
Lots of good Vulcan news in a short while…..:D
NEAM have a Shorts 330, and its easy to see how it comes apart since alot of the panels are off…
Pop over to Sunderland and take as much time as you need to study it. Ours is ex-gill airways G-OGIL, which has the unfortunate accolade of being the only SWEPT WING 330….
It was taxied into the hangar literally, and the wings took mpost of the force resulting in a bent spar. 3 degree sweep back which of course wrote it off…
Spiteful or Sea Fury wing (clipped too)
Late Griffon
Mustang fuse
All moving tail surface (F86?)
Polished metal exterior, csk rivets…. smoooooooth….
What happened to the Learstang?
Failing that, just build an MB5…..
Here you go courtesy of vulcans in camera website. This is XL319 btw
Ah well, Peter goofed up. They’ll give moderators positions to anyone these days….
Back to business – When 319 was with 617 sqn in the colours seen here, she had something written on her entrance door (same as the other 617 jets I believe). I’m positive this was the squadron crest, a couple of other badges, and the names of the crew responsible for the aircraft. Does anyone have a good picture of one of these doors? We want to replicate this feature with absolute accuracy. On the photo Peter has so kindly posted here, you can see the sqn crest, 617 flashes, another badge and the names…If anyone has a face on view of of 319’s door showing said detail, they are more than welcome to one of my kidneys or a lung….
(more picture updates later)
I’ll be there tomorrow. While you lot are showing off YOUR Vulcan at Jeeps and Jets, I’m going to be applying the markings on the F86D in full view of the public (dontions for the poor painter’s fund welcome…). A little restoration demo goes a long way! That should fill in the weekend.
And before the fun police descend, the Vole AND the toad were safely deposited on the embankment in the long grass….alive and well
You didn’t kill it did you?
I ate it……..;) and the toad…….
What about the Lancaster one?….. Could have done with that over the winter…..
Re the Victor and Bucc, I can only surmise, but I think its public liability insurance….
2 August 07 Update
Yet another busy day for some of us…..
The Vulcan surroundings are almost presentable again – see the photo for comparison with earlier ones. The only problems encountered were lack of strimmer wire, and blazing sun!
Amongst the finds in the long grass were :
A toad
Several golf balls (see the picture to see our problem…;) )
and an evil killing machine which was fine until I prodded it. It bit me.
A cheeky magpie set the tone of the day…
The no. 2 Jetpipe was inspected as far as possible for corrosion and appeared fine! The rest will get done soon.
The gravel is almost gone thanks to the Academy boys – keep smiling lads, the worst is almost over, then we can start fixing 319!
Finally, some gratuitous shots of the P40 wing and the Auster!
I would assume lack of funds. When I was there, we used to get donations of fuel from the airshow bowsers which would see us the rest of the year. Major problem now I would assume would be public liability insurance..
She is immaculate, but I have never seen the Brunty example, so I couldn’t say which was best. I’d be biased too…..
Everything on Lindy worked except a few unknows like the anti ice, etc which we couldn’t test, and the autopilot kept coming off line at random points. The H2S works a treat. I swear a couple of years ago she had air UNDER her wheels during a VERY fast taxi……….
They have a good stack of spares, but as usual the problem is that she is not under cover. If a big hangar could be built, she’d out live us all.
I’m sure Steven will have more up to date news on her. We’d appreciate being kept informed since the website is down…..
My regards to Andre, Andy King et all… Do you still have Roger ‘Ra ra my aeroplane’ Brooks there?
Update 01 August 07
Just a small one for you today…. The mystere tail art has been applied to the stbd side, and the blue and red of the roundels has been painted. Just the white and yellow for the roundels to go.
We are pleased to be hosting the Guild of Aviation Artists Northern Region Meeting at NEAM on Saturday 11 August, so if you want to see some amazing artists at work, come visit! http://www.gava.org.uk
Also try ‘The Halifax Explored’ CD… We used the Lanc explored during PA474’s major and it had some good photos….. I’m sure someone will have a copy (not that I’m condoning pirate DVD’s or anything!…..). There’s usually an advert in Flypast for it….
Elvington (Yorkshire Air Museum) may have something along those lines too. Worth a try…
