DB – Tried e-mailing them, but no reply, that said, it wasn’t about the glass. I’ll try again. Cheers

edit: TVOC (Mr. Edmondson) e-mailed with a grovelling request… my knees are sore…

    ——————————————————————————–
I was recently in Newcastle on on business and having a free afternoon, I thought I’d drop into the North East Aircraft Museum (NEAM).

Frankly I wish I hadn’t! I mainly went to have a look at XL319. If there is ever an old lady who needs to be put out of her misery, its her. She’s in an absolutely deplorable state. I appreciate it costs a load of money to maintain an airframe in a resonable condition but I really think she should be reduced to spares for use on other, better kept examples.

Just found this on the TVOC forum – its people like this who don’t help. If anyone is a member on the forum, could they please set the record straight?
Post is in ‘Aviation Waffle’, thread is ‘XL319’. Thanks. (It won’t let me post)

For the record, XL319 will NOT be reduced to spares while I am still breathing!

Peter – we have just contacted Woodford, BAe systems. They should have got a rather polite begging letter this morning…

I have read ‘No Moon Tonight’ probably 10 times, for some reason it just seems to click with me, I believe Don Charlwood is still alive and lives here in Victoria.

    I also like;
    The Big Show (Pierre Clostermann)
and War in a Stringbag (Charles Lamb)

    Paul

I met Mr. Charlwood 10-15 years ago at Sunderland Airshow! I bought the book from him – as in, he personally took my pocket money. Didn’t realise what an honour it was at the time. I only read it for the first time last year… Great book!

Got ‘Talkdown’ by Brian Lecomber somewhere – must dig it out. It would make a good film as has been suggested. Even using real aircraft! – a CGI cessna (or whatever it was…) would be a bit duff…..

And sincere apologies to anyone connected to Eric ‘ Winkle’ Brown. My memory is rubbish……

LoL well the goats ate me coat and I tripped over that dog that cannot be named trying to run thru door 😀

LL have u guys got a decent model Vulcan?

    Bex

We have a 1:72 Vulc. Its a damn site better than I could do! Its even got its own cabinet and plinth!! (Terribly sorry to hear about the coat….)

Can’t imagine for a second TVOC giving us some glass, dispite having given them some internal bits already. Still, stranger things have happened. One rumour was that they may be donating a set of U/c leg doors, but I won’t hold my breath. Rumour Control is at its highest state of alert….

    TWO VULCANS!!!!

hehe. Yeah. Thats hopefully what we will be doing. The new hardstanding could be made right up to the hedge on the bottom of the pic and extended to the left around the dog-leg in the hangar – enough room for a freshly painted cranberry…. or a FSM hurricane/spitfire…. Sadly all of this is just planning as yet – lack of concrete stops play!

Considered electrifying the fence, or buying a rotweiler, but this was met with incredulous looks and being handed my coat. Bex, you’ll know all about coats, doors, goats and a dog which cannot be named…..:D

Lightning again – the vertical height problem may exist inside the hangar too, plus its difficult enough towing the damn thing about over soft marshy gravel without balancing it on a trolley…. *note to self – fix the nose wheel steering!!! – lack of castoring makes life difficult!*

And finally, yes a structural engineer would have to be called regardless of the weight of the aircraft… 🙁

Neil, I like the idea of new signs, as well as the boards in the main hangar. We are looking to install a few boards for an aviation art gallery in there, as something may be happening to the engine display room where the pictures are now, which will mean that the room must be empty! (or rather filled with something else)

As for gun emplacements – don’t laugh but the Bofors gun will be kept outside in its own revetment including barbed wire, sand bags, etc… its just deciding where to put it….

Keep it all coming guys. Thanks!

Conifers or something similar – YES! I suggested the very same to Chris on sunday! The green grant could be a good avenue though – good thinking.

Lightning – As it is at the minute, the lightning needs its fin replacing. We have a replacement, but (I think) the hangar roof is too low to get the fin on. It will have to be done via crane, etc outside, then moved back indoors – which is where the vertical height comes into play -she might not get back through the door!

Which brings us onto the other door problem. The main hangar is an industrial unit with a narrow door – The lightning (probably – must get it measured) won’t fit through the opening.

As for hanging things from the roof – we have a Mignet Flea, a Luton Minor, and a hang glider which would go up there quite happily. Good suggestion.

Not going to get down there today – damn car!

Wow your getting quite a resume with work on lusty lindy, XL319 and PA474!

Lindy was a long time ago… ahh, those were the days…;)
PA474 was the first proper job I had in civvie street post Newcastle Aviation Academy. (Now its all down hill with faceless Airbus A310’s, etc…)

But Peter… a Lancaster has a bit of a bigger pull. I had to move to Coventry for six months to work on PA474, and travel for 4 hours to see the wife and kids on a weekend…. I have a VERY understanding wife….:D

If the passion is there, distance doesn’t matter…..;)

    Lobby for Aviation Art forum

Truely amazing. You could not get that level of detail with a brush unless it was close to 1:1 scale….

So moderators, how about it? An aviation art forum? There would have to be a big sign saying ‘Do not copy these images cos they are copyright to the artist’, or make sure all pictures uploaded have a watermark…. just a thought!

I’ve been at Newcastle College for the last two years studying Avionics Engineering with a bit of workshop thrown in ie. riveting and sheet metal work. Probably not relevant but iv’e also done RADAR and NAV, Pitot static, di-icing systems, theroy of flight and aircraft electric machines/motors. I’m moving up to the Academy at Newcastle Airport in September.

Completely relevant. I’m a product of the academy too. NAA2 2004-6, although I escaped the colege bit (cos I’m an old git and ex-RAF). Hopefully the academy will be part of our restoration plans too. They are a great bunch of people. Look out for Dave Southern. Top guy

Thanks for your help. I’m very interested. What activities could I expect to do on the Vulcan if I was to turn up?

Intense supervision for a start! Do you have any working knowledge of aircraft?

Jobs right now include: Full wash, corrosion treatment on the spar caps, cockpit spruce up (clean and seal the canopy) ready for visitors for Jeeps and Jets weekend. (see Jeeps and Jets thread).

The way ahead is to come down for a few weeks to see if you like it, and take it from there. We have alot more than the Vulcan which needs doing. Best thing is to come down on a sunday, and find me. (John)

The Brit is looking good. I will give that working party some thought. We have put in a bid for some parts which are sorely needed, so hopefully there will be something to paint fairly soon. Plus, we need ALOT more paint…..and we are seeking sponsorship for that…

Thanks for the comments everyone, both good and bad. Its exactly what we need – lots of idea, thoughts and suggestions. The less time I spend thinking, the more work I can do! Hopefully, there will be some update pics tomorrow. (If I get over there after I’ve taken my damn car to the garage to have its engine hit with a big stick)

Would it be worth trying to organise a dedicated working party day?

We try and have one once a month at Speke (in addition to normal weekend activities) and we average about 15 people coming to work on the Brit. Admittedly the nature of the project is different in that CF is in bits but the essence is the same.

Sunday is the day. Usually during the week, there may be one or two people kicking about, but on Sunday the work gets done. I’m lucky in the fact that I live within spitting distance of the museum and can just pop over whenever I have ten minutes spare. Some members have their own projects which they plod on with, the Gazelle being a prime example, but usually such people have other commitments which means that they can’t always get there on a Sunday. The stalwart of the museum, Billy, looks after the place 6 days a week, cutting the grass and being the shop assistant, etc.

Regards the Vulcan, we simply don’t have enough people to form a working party. There are a number of us who float about doing a bit of everything, and I think that it is us who will chip in on the Vulcan. Maybe one or two people on the beastie full time, with help when needed. She certainly is THE priorty museum-wide now. As always, weather permitting.

Great work on the Brit, by the way!
