    OOOF!!

Seriously mate, I’d move heaven and earth to make sure that it’s simply towed to wherever else you move it. I dread to think of the costs involved in NEAM attempting to dismantle the aircraft and move it by truck. It would be an enormous undertaking, and would eat up an enormous amount of manpower, money and resources. Having seen XL318, I would not personally like the thought of dismantling her in that way, with a view to rebuilding her. Trust me, when you start pulling it apart, you will open a massive can of worms that doesn’t come cheaply to mend.

I don’t mean this in any way a slight on the guys at NEAM, or yourself, but being up to my eyes rebuilding ‘the best example of its type’ XH558, my rose tinted spectacles have now been both dropped and trodden on, as to how easy rebuilding such a beast is.

    Cheers,

    Flipflopman

Not my idea, I hasten to add….! The figures I have heard estimate £50 K just to get another ‘speciallist’ company to dismantle her, move and rebuild her. Personally, I think its crazy as just towing her 40 yards is going to be a nightmare…. and 500K for the following!…. –>

I have learned since yesterday that all of the above may be on hold as there are certain people who want the whole museum to move. There are claims that the grants available would be considerably more if the entire museum was moved to a new site, and may provide a means of getting a ‘landmark building’ erected. From my personal point of view, it seems a little strange, but I’m not the boss by a long way. The museum has been suffering considerably in the last 20 years since its previous home was built on, but at last there are plans afoot to rejuvenate it. The management need to decide on a direction for the museum regarding its location first and foremost. If it stays where it is, we can develop the site to provide a much tidier and visitor friendly place – an actual tourist attraction! If we move, we have to start over again. Not an exciting prospect. I’ll keep you informed.

Its one of several options. naturally, if we can get things for a discounted price, such as a damaged FSM, or the shipping containers, then it leaves us with better options on things like visitor facilities. All I’m after is leads.

The playpark is sorted, but there are other things we need to get first.

The FSMs and the new hangar base take priority, followed by the nissen huts, play area, then a roof over the vulc.

Things such as the DB tug are for my own personal enjoyment, and are in hand, so thank you to all who have contributed to that link!

The Vulcan will be moved, whether it is simply towed 100 yards to its new hardstanding, or whether it is dismantled, trucked, and re-built.

Vultee35, I trust you will be coming to the evening do…? See you there!
Apparently, there will be some guys manning the Bofors Gun during the weekend, providing we can get it up an running!

Just as an aside, what would your thoughts be for setting up a display hall for your vehicles on the NEAM site as part of the museum?

PA474 is also fitted with Lincoln type rudders. These aircraft were generally constructed with these rudders, rather than retro-fitted.

The Lincoln rudder added extra area to the trim tabs, which would improve the ability of the pilot to keep the aircraft trimmed straight with engines out, etc, and also improve the rudder response.

The later Lancs were built with an increase in trim tab, and thus a squared off rudder. The Lincoln design carried this on. Curiously, the Shackleton did not….

…… takes the point loads exertied by a 16 ton lightning and aircraft such as the Vulcan = £32,000 total this cost come from the following:

    ….

Hope that gives you an idea of the mamoth task we have just completed

    Cheers
    🙂

Would be nice to see a Vulcan white, but I can only imagine the headaches with keeping it clean if its outside, our camo and grey ‘little’ Lightnings are a pain in the a***, which is where this started I think, going for a lie down now 😀

That would it with our forcasted budget. In case you couldn’t tell, I have had nothing whatsoever to do with the planning….:o

The QRA sheds are a work of art, and you should be knighted for re-building them! That act alone has saved your lightnings for many years to come… good effort!

Ive got half a tin of dulux in the garage for the first vulcan interested, they can even have the broken fence post mixing stick.

Has anyone any idea if it was only the V-bombers and TSR2 that were painted white or were other aircraft? Im guessing it would only be those nuclear capable but was anything else used?Canberras perhaps?

thanks… do you also have a completely solid paint brush?… ours sadly still have bristles which are soft…

The Saunders Roe SR177 (or whatever that SR aircraft at Cosford is…The one with the missiles on the wing tips… I’m sure you know wht I mean!). That was white.

I think that you will need a bit more than 40 tonnes of hardcore / concrete if it is to hold the weight of a Vulcan – ask the Lightning Group at Bruntingthorpe about how much they used for their QRA shed.

See post #331 on the link below:

Already off my bum and looking! The play park will be a major investment, and built by a speciallist company, just want to know if anyone has used such a firm, etc.

Nissen huts – looking at a couple of options including new build and former RAF

Its the FSM’s which will earn anyone brownie points for finding…..

Concrete, etc for a new hardstanding – donations are welcome! 😀

Thanks for the info on the nissen huts!

Nissen huts….well just get off your bum and go ask…thats what we did six years ago at RAF Bentwaters and built our own museum, we recovered three more from Derby last year for the extension – but they are hard work to dismantle properly and erect properly (you need a good tool kit and a tensioner) but if they are in good order you’ll have to dismantle em yourself – if in poor state and falling down you wont want them anyway!

DB tractor, oodles around, been offered several unrestored which need work for less than £500.

Aircraft Tug, we have two, ‘Rosie’ a Reliance tug which was bought (in Argentinian AF markings 😮 😮 ) for £75 about 5 years ago and ‘Jim’ a Douglas Tugmaster which was a couple of hundred quid at about the same time… they’re around….check ebay

Playpark subject to lots of H&S gubbins – be careful. better to get a specialist company in there…

Can’t say, not until I have presented the plans to the board. I just need leads at the minute….

its a small museum with many interesting aircraft including a record breaker and a film star. All but two aircraft are under cover and in the process of being restored. The plans are for regeneration of the museum which will increase the dwindling visitors by providing conference facilities, a cafe, and reflect the history of the site. Its a UK museum.
