I’ve heard that the Texas Airplane Factory is considering building a few Ju-87 Stukas after they get the Oscars sold.

My understanding is that she needs lots of expensive work yet, but at least she’ll be at home in her own hangar where they can work on her over the winter instead of the maintenance crew having to commute back and forth to California.

No, 51025 clearly said U. S. Navy on the side.
The picture you posted is of AT-11 N7337C, for sure. I have several photos of it from the side, rear left quarter and nose for comparative verification.

I was there the whole week. I had a green EAA Photo vest on much of the time.

I agree that a movie about Erich Hartmann would be excellent.
A good novel begging to be made into a movie is “Gray Eagles” by Duane Unkefer. Set in 1980s, some retired WWII Luftwaffe fighter pilots secretly restore some Bf-109s and then set out to settle an old score by bouncing some retired USAAF pilots who are flying P-51s on the airshow circuit. Great dog-fights. Great fun.

Firebombers….that brings back a much older warbird memory. In 1967, a strong wind caused a small Montana forest fire to become a major inferno. I was able to drive to a spot right across the river from a mountainside of flames and watch as B-17s, PBYs, A-26s, and DC-6s came down the valley one after another to drop their loads of retardant. I stayed a long time to watch the warbirds in awe as they performed their missions in an entirely different type of combat zone.

Three P-51 Mustangs (one was “Worry Bird”) and a F4U-7 Corsair “Alberta Blue” at Fairchild Air Force Base Open House in 1983. All through my growing up years I had read about warbirds and build many models but seeing real warbirds there in front of me with props turning, smoke, beautiful deep engine noise, etc….. I couldn’t take my eyes away and felt a very deep excitement. Well, right then my addiction for WWII aircraft became a full blown disease but I’ve loved every minute of it since then. Long may they fly! And MANY thanks to those that own and fly them for us to enjoy!
