I’m decorating all of july – I had to cancel everything to get this house done so we can move to a cracker of a house we’re buying right under the approach to Biggin Hill, with enough garage space for all the cars – so it s all in a good cause 😀
still going to Fairford and Farnborough (with work) though 🙂
nice!
love the hawk shot
hi-vis vests in air to air shots now…!
They get everywhere!
Nice shots though – looks like you had a good trip
or emit a blue note
Food good and afordable, people willing to help, no pratts on ladders at the fence. An all round nice place. When we left in the Spitfire at the end of the show people were still full of enthusiasm, good to see.
Level of Numpties – Low.
Number of interesting people – V High.
sounds like the old Rochester Airshow
they just seem so real…
Blimey – they managed four servicable Typhoons!
some kind of record?
please don’t start with trains – it’s bad enough they’ve invaded Discovery Wings!
gets my vote too
It doesn’t matter how fantastic a building is in concept and noble in intention – some people will always whinge…
Personally I love it – it allows a ‘grand entrance’ where you walk in and get a B52 right in your face, and then as you wander round you can see everything, wheras in a normal hangar, you have to shuffle around among groups of people just to see what’s ‘down the end’. Let’s not forget chaps that it is a memorial, so try to be polite with your comments as to it’s aesthetic appeal. It wasn’t built for ‘us’ it was built for ‘them’
It’s far enough from the traditional buildings to allow yourself a bit of day dreaming time travel as you wander round. I’ve been going there for over 25 years and I still never tire of it.
Keep up the good work Duxford!
your mention of ‘redundant burger gear’ actually makes me feel quite sad – I realised how much I would look forward to the Air Fete each year…
Their burger relish was fantastic and as a kid it was ‘cool’ being able to use US dollars left over from holidays!
Way back – watching the SR71 take off and feeling the ground shake, so many other great types, sadly no longer with us – today’s air shows aren’t a patch on the old days – but I still go as they’re better than nothing.
Maybe when the spams have finished imposing ‘freedom’ on the middle east we can have our airshow back!
I hope that Lanc’s fully laden 😉
Thanks chaps – my mate watched it from his living room window – made his day!
I’ll tell him PL965 🙂
I had lunch in the Kings Arms at Biggin Hill last sunday – apparently the landlord of this particular pub was killed while watching an air raid from the pub door. There’s a picture of the place complete with shot up cars in Biggin on the Bump by Bob Ogley. The old Jail is a nice place – plenty of pictures on the walls – thay have regular talks there by old pilots and other notables. A list of these dates is available from St Georges Chapel at the airfield.
Anyone know if any of the pubs in Podington have a tangible connection with the nearby Station 109 (now Santa Pod) 92nd BG?
I use to spend my holidays in westgate, a seaside town not far from Manston, and loved going across the airport to see the visiting aircraft, and exibition of a Spitfire, a Javelin and a Canberra. But upon all was intrigued by the dump, where were Vulcans, Varsities…Has anyone got phototographs of this dump?
Thank You
No pics, but I used to walk around the fire dump at Manston, wandering among Vulcans, one of which had it’s nose gear in a hole to simulate a collapse, there was a shackleton laying there half burned, lightnings, victors and a smashing smashed viscount among many other delights.
One day however it all they sent the landrover out to escort me off the premises, but in the years leading up to that you just wandered past the RAF chaps playing football and helped yourself. Happy days!
