Typical Daily Mail (hack, spit) readers (loony alert) comments:
You get the picture…
I hate to make a call to troll, but when DM readers get the idea that hundreds die at every airshow that has ever taken place, anywhere, maybe more knowledgeable and, erm, sane ‘experts’ need to go and enlighten them.
Started doing my bit but there are so many comments to reply to
One was interesting, said that many countries allow air shows only over water. Anyone know them?

“So they’re the real victims here, right?”
I don’t think that, I’m surprised you do but everyone is entitled to their opinion

“Sounds like a case for a petition. Someone contact SomeOfUs or 38 Degrees quick!”
Sarcasm is the lowest form etc. but anyway, who are they?

“That sounds…disturbing, but I’m sure you have the information to hand that backs this up and an eagerness to share…”
If I could be bothered to respond to that sort of tone I might look and share but I have better things to do

“As for his parts/scrap too bad. Drug dealers lose cars to the crusher that are worth more than his tat”
In money terms probably but in historic terms no

I’m very tempted but the temptation isn’t as strong as the fear of the wife and kids reaction if I don’t go on the holiday that starts on that weekend.
Was really good last year and the amount of interest in the cockpits shown by people was very high.
So if it turns out Fred West or Ian Brady built Airfix Lancasters does that immediately make a documentary on their sad lives the subject of a valid Historic Aviation post?
I ask only for future reference.

No it doesn’t, it would be in the modelling section, but when the person concerned has or had a complete historic Lightning, a ventral turret from a Wellington, significant amounts of Lancaster parts and assorted other airframe parts including cockpits then I for one will take note of anything like this because it puts them in danger.
It wasn’t a documentary on his life anyway, it was a documentary on his and his brother’s reaction to having their only access to the outside world blocked.
In answer to the question about scrapping items, it’s not unknown for the police and/or the local authority to confiscate anything they find on site, regardless of whether it is relevant to the crime committed, and then dump it in the English Channel or wherever. As far as I’m aware some organisations did approach the police to prevent this happening in this case.

It was originally in Historic, presumably on the basis that the flasher had some vague connection to that part of aviation.

You do him unjust.
Like him or loathe him, and a lot of people weren’t impressed with him before his rural antics became general knowledge, he had quite a big connection to historic aviation. There are/were some unique and historic items in his collection that a number of people were deeply worried about when he was arrested. It’s still unclear what happened to the collection, was it confiscated and scrapped or is it still in his possession?
There are a lot of unanswered questions around this whole sorry episode, I for one am not going to speculate on them.

Belongs to MOD/RAF
5 May 00 By road from RAF Newton ( where it had been dismantled for transport
two days earlier) to RAFM Hendon on initial three year loan from the
RAF/MoD. Dummy GPS equipment now fitted. Photo on display; Flypast

OK, thanks.
Why does a Chipmunk need GPS? Can’t they just lean out and ask someone?
The Hendon Chipmunk is not owned by Richard Wilsher – he helped with information for the historical narrative.
So who does own it?
[QUOTE=WH904;2238496]Bunsen, I don’t think there’s any misunderstanding, it’s just the implication that follows. All well and good to claim that the collection should be directly relevant to Scampton, but if Buccaneer items were removed it suggests that it’s more about an obsession with the WWII era yet again. QUOTE]
I don’t think that if Buccaneer stuff is removed it points to an obsession with WW2. It could just as easily be an obsession with Eurofighter. Alternatively it could just be that as there were no Buccaneer units based at Scampton it wasn’t seen as relevant. Don’t forget, we’re talking about the RAF Scampton Heritage Centre, not a general aviation museum.
On that sort of note, are we discussing the correct Vulcan nose? I don’t think anyone from VTTST, Aeroventure or Scampton has posted on this thread, one of them could confirm it. I say that because also at Aeroventure is the nose of Vulcan XL388, which did fly operationally from Scampton.
Gokone – That’s very sad if the Scampton museum is deliberately removing items that people would like to see. As you say, there’s certainly no reason why Buccaneer artefacts shouldn’t be on show – same would apply to Phantom, Tucano, Jet Provost, Hunter, Vulcan of course, Canberra… etc. I really do find the obsession with the WWII era very frustrating.
There’s been a misunderstanding here.
There never was any intention to have only WWII items there. The Museum is the RAF Scampton Museum and a new Station Commander thought it was inappropriate to have items that had no direct relevance to Scampton or the units that were there while they were there.
As a result a number of items were ordered to be removed.
There was a lot of anguish over the way it was done and the timescales imposed by the RAF, more time should have been allowed and the person(s) deciding what should be retained and what should go should have been more knowledgeable but as afar as I know at no time were the people running the Museum told to have only WWII items
How true! History never ends….
History never ends but Government disposals procedures and attitudes to heritage change, with resulting changes in availability of items for preservation.
So TSR2 items appear now and then but later Harrier GR1 items, that I need, don’t and then Tornado items do but at stupid prices that hardly anyone can afford.
I have altered the somewhat enigmatic thread title suitably.
It would be helpful if posters would realise that not everyone is as familiar with acronyms as they are.
Using them does not confer any superiority over the rest of the readers.

Knowing Gokone and going by his many previous posts I think that’s an unfair implication.
Yes he could have explained the acronyms but he probably just assumed people would know them or ask, which someone did. He certainly doesn’t seek to be superior to others.
While I’m on, I do think this issue is right to be aired, it acts as a caution to others to be more cautious in their dealings and obtain written terms of agreement.
