Jeez!
You don’t HAVE to attend, do you?
Popham has to make money to survive as working airfield, and the Aerojumbles, etc, are a means to do that.
Yes we do have to attend if we’re going to obtain items ands references for our projects, to meet others interested in aviation, and to support the traders who make the effort to attend with stocks of aforementioned items so that they will continue to attend.
In terms of long term survival, if the aerojumbles are part of that plan then prices to stall holders and buyers need to be set at a level that will encourage them to attend year on year regardless of the weather and encourage potential new enthusiasts to attend. Why are process for other events so much lower than those for aviation events? Killing the golden goose comes to mind.
Along with unicycling clowns, Popham has a unique atmosphere and I would sorely miss it if I was unable to attend but I’m not going to spend hours travelling on South West Trains finest and then doing the walk (free) from Micheldever Station if there’s nothing more than atmosphere waiting for me at the airfield.
Of course it could be that Popham is going down the Biggin Hill route and becoming hostile to enthusiasts but if that’s the case they should just say keep out and not try to price them out.
I have a CD-ROM copy of Mignet’s book….be careful, you may yet inspire me!
I’ve a couple of original 1930s copies of the book and a 1930s fuselage. As soon as I have time, space and money to buy spruce and thin ply I’m going to attempt to complete it.
Same here, weather permitting. There’s a nice little B&B pub nearby. Popham is just too cold to camp and dodging the dual carriageway for a meal at Heston’s Little Thief has lost it’s appeal.
There’s always the Red Fort in Micheldever if you need to warm up.
I’ll be going as a buyer, just hope the weather is good because it’s a long walk from the station
[QUOTE=OneEighthBit;2132179]All,
the climb-descend gauge needs the corner cut-out for the zeroing mechanism.
The Corner isn’t cut out, the adjusting screw is accessed through a screw hole in the panel.
Some round top panels were modified flat tops, you can tell which ones because they have both vocab sections and references but the earlier one is struck through. On that basis, all the holes and the width should be the same. The maximum height probably is.
I always thought the smell was part of the history. My family don’t agree though.
I have a similar problem. I was told that soap flakes, in warm water and used for a hand wash followed by a warm rinse will do the job but I’d be inclined to test this on a hidden part of the yellow cloth because it can fade badly when washed. Definitely don’t use machine powder, bio or non bio.
You’ll have to dry it very quickly to reduce the level of corrosion that will result from the contact with water. Might also be as well to remove any rubber components to delay them going crispy. I don’t know why but post war bladders go crispy even in good storage conditions. I’ve some 41 and 32 pattern life jacket bladders that are still pliable despite indifferent storage but nearly all the post war examples are either solid or on the way there. Same with “foam rot” in flying helmets, what causes that?
Transport will be arranged both to and from the show for you mate, just let me know what you’re bringing and our transport firm will be over to pick everything up.
Has to be authentic.
Couple of Matador or Bedford RL flat beds, RAF blue with yellow roofs.
I see no reason to recover it. There are plenty about, and even our national museums don’t want one!
Out of interest, how many genuine German built Ju52s are there? Are the Swissair operated aircraft German built?
Subject to transport availability I’ll be taking a couple of cockpits/moneypits, one very rare, and relevant flying clothing. If I can’t sort out transport I’ll take some mannequins dressed in something RAF.
Avoid Olive Oil.
That’s right, Pop Eye becomes really jealous after a tin of spinach
Pictures would be useful
I hate seeing stories like this, they should be kept in the family whenever possible, but I don’t know the full facts….
True but hopefully they will go somewhere they can be viewed, even if it’s only by appointment
Still going on, Nimrod MRA4, refurbishment of MR2
And the Harrier
Some interesting projects here, any of them Going to Damyns Hall and/or Cockpitfest?
Be nice to see them
Not sure if it’s already been mentioned, but wasn’t there a company called “Fagans Brown” (or something very similar) who
made replicas at the time of the BoB film ?
It was Fegans Brown. Not sure about the Battle of Britian film but they definitely made some for Piece of Cake
Three pairs of experimental boots, two Iraq/Afghanistan and a pair of Typhoon anti G bots plus an early Harrier Oxygen mask.
I’m happy
