Interesting stuff turns up in odd places. Also via the saleroom there was a fine art sale last week that included a “RNAS Sword” I think it was actually a pre war RAF Air Rank sword, I’ll know later this week.
While I have nothing against Scampton itself I don’t think it’s the right place for a national museum.
I take a lot of foreign visitors to places they wouldn’t normally go to but Scampton isn’t on the list. It’s not the distance but the availability of good public transport links. I’m very keen to vist the Heritage Centre at Scampton but haven’t been able to because of the logistics of travelling to it by public transport. Hendon is limited by it’s size but to reach it all you need to do is go to central London then the Northern Line to Colindale and then walk or go by a frequent bus service to the Museum.
If you’re one of the majority of tourists then it’s a no brainer.
I’m not saying I like this situation but I don’t see it changing.
The light coloured suit in the photo looks like a Taylor floatation suit, it was light coloured (yellow), to aid visibility if the wearer was in the sea. It was stuffed with kapok and had pockets for kapok pads. The suit was worn mainly by gunners as they worked in cramped positions where a lifejacket could get in the way. There was a version of the 1940 pattern flying suit, the 1941 pattern, that was electrically heated. Both were green “sidcot” suits, the difference being the press stud electrical contacts and wiring. A lot of the 1941 pattern suits were used by motorcyclists after the war but with the wiring removed.
The prices will be what people are willing to pay and there are a lot of fools with money out there. SOme of the prices look pessimistic given what you pay on evilbay.
I remember Ken Ancombe from about forty years ago, had a lot of dug stuff.
Why do they need to have served in the military? A completely different skill set is need to run a museum. Yes they have to understand the area covered by the museum but this requires empathy and the ability to absorb and use knowledge.
Kenley Aerojumble coming up on 7th October. Excellent site, increasing numbers of buyers and sellers and most of all, it’s cheap to have a stall. You need to check but I’ve been told it’s £20 and that includes two entry tickets. Details should be on the Acebell Aviation web site. If you’re going by train the best station is Whyteleafe South, not Kenley, then it’s a long walk up a steep hill but it’s worth it
I need one of those. When Hanningfield Metals was breaking lots of fifties and sixties designs I could have built up my own stash but I nver thought I’d have the need
Bhagavad Gita. A hindu scripture.
I’ve been in a few Hindu Temples and taken part in the worship ceremonies so I thought I’d try to understand a little more about what’s behind it all.
I work at South Quay on the Isle of Dogs. We often see these types of things tied up next to the office and you do wonder how they’re paid for.
Where are you sourcing the cable for the electrical work? With luck I’m going to need some soon but I’ve not found any for sale.
And while I’m logged in, isn’t there a good Station Heritage Centre at Scampton? What will happen to that?
“…The reason is London is still the major tourist destination for most people coming to UK, thus Hendon is going nowhere…”
I doubt that not too many visitors to London from overseas, make the effort to visit Hendon ?”
Every time I’ve been to Hendon the number of people who are tourists has outnumbered the rest of us. Hendon is easy to reach from central London, Northern Line then a bus or short walk.
Pretty much all of the buildings at Hendon and even the gates are listed so couldn’t be demolished and the listing tends to include surroundings to maintain some sort of context.
Next year is also the fiftieth annversary of the entry into RAF service of the Harrier and the Transatlantic Air Race

“I guess it’s all too easy to ask what harm is really being done when it’s not your property or privacy. Imagine coming home one day to find photos of the contents of your garage or house plastered over the web. It’s all acceptable and harmless as long as it’s someone else’s privacy, right? “
I had an email from someone asking if they could come and take photos of one of my cockpits “for personal use”. Said person arrived with a friend, while discussing the cockpit in question the friend, without my knowledge, went round taking photos of everything else in my garden and garage. SOme of it is out of siight of the road but is very “colectable”. I had no idea until my phone went red hot with calls from friends telling my that all the photos were on facebook. One of the friends had the entire post taken down on privacy grounds. It turned out that other people had the same problem with this couple. One person’s girlfriend heard a noise and went downstairs to see two people peering through the house windws, she was scared stiff. He had a Buccaneer nose in the front garden and would have given permission for them to take photos from his land but they didn’t even ask him. So now I don’t let anyone take photos becasue I have no guarantee that they won’t be misused
Until recently I had the radome from the Javelin on the gate, acquired from Hanningfield Metals, but it’s gone to a better home. Also had some panels from the side consoles but they were borrowed for copying by a project in Germany and never returned.
The Canberras were a mixed bunch of T4s, B2s and at least one T11. The DC-6 had an engine fire and made an emergency landing. It was being repaired by an engineer from Sabena, I still have his cap badge and long service badge.
