From Mayhem Marshy
“The thing that I find utterly despicable, is the fact that a place of remembrance, respect and quiet reflection (building and grounds), is being turned into part of a tourist attraction in the first place – surely, there would have been an alternative place to site a museum, not too far away?”
There is a much better location on the other side of the airfield with original wartime structures, one quite unusual and one slowly rotting away. This could be turned into a bigger and better museum at less cost than the memorial museum.
It was a City of London WIng camp, now London Wing. You could try them to see if they have any records.
I was there, took photos of the Canberras, the Javelin and the Belgian Air Force DC-6 but none of the Chipmunks. I was there the same week that Turkey invaded northern Cyprus. Interesting seeing painters painting a pile of WW2 steel helmets and some other stuff becoming decidedly war like. Not sure what the role of the Canberras would have been though
How is it I’ve been to India seven times and outside the airports not seen anything aviation other than a Sea Hawk on a stick?
I picked up an eight squadron A Type Flying helmet, very happy with that. A few of the auto jumble stall had aviation items, including the aforementioned large lumps of Lightning. One stall had a lot of wiring and plugs and sockets, amongst other stuff.
The stall price had been wrongly stated in the adverts, anyone who turned up having pre paid was given a £10 refund.
I’ll be going to Kenley, I did well in buying and selling last time.
Wasn’t aware of the disparity in stall prices but I’m not surprised
Who are you calling old?
I was really disappointed. Hardly any aerojumble stalls, all car related. I’m told this was largely due to the cost of stalls, it’s certainly cheaper on the other days and events. I didn’t see the bloke on the unicycle too. Having to walk in next to the cars was interesting, breating in masses of dust and smoke.
That said, there were some very attractive light aircraft there, including two registerd in Germany that I’d never seen before and didn’t have a clue as to what they were.
Many thanks for explaining the Wedding photos. I often see them being taken but never asked why.
Bunsen, have you contacted Emily W at Westland (Leonardo) yet? I will pm contacts if not. They have a lot of Wapiti info.
Hi Beermat
No I hadn’t, because I’d been told that they wouldn’t help, but in a phone call a couple of days ago I was told that might not be the case. After the holiday I was going to look for a contact but if you have one it would be useful, save me using some sort of generic address auch as archivist or PRO.
The Norfolk and Suffol Air Museum have a Ryan F24 complete with Bomb for the same purpose
The Wapiti has always been a favourite of mine and as a result of sending some scans to Jagan for use with his book on the Wapiti I found that one of my log books was far more important than I thought. I’ve been thinking about doing a thirties aircraft and having a Wapiti rudder bar clinched it. The instruments etc are going to be a challenge, particularly financial, but the biggest problem has been finding details of the panel itself.
Emails to those I thought might have the information haven’t been repied to.
I put this in Projects wants and trades but I think it should have gone here. I can’t see how to move a post so……………..
Been looking to do something a bit different for cockpitfest, not next year’s though.
Does anyone have drawings of the Wapiti instrument panel? Or anything else in the general area of the panel.
Somewhere I have a drawing of a MkIX panel and that one does have the “bridge”. The L shaped cut out was for the sun screen but, as has been suggested, the top may have been removed for the reflector sight, which may have been retro fitted to some MK IXs

I think this is a really good idea, I’d certainly support it.
Location could be difficult, airfields are usually out of the way with poor communications but places in towns are expensive but if an arty crafty lot can do it I don’t see any insurmountable reasons not to try.
I sold some odds and ends of cockpit parts that then paid for a 12AEF flying suit some gloves and an escape knife. I think I broke even but as I spend most of my working days doing things with numbers I tend to avoid it at weekends.
I was very happy with the weekend, only downside was missing the early morning tea run but I don’t think it was personal.
