    Small world……!!!

I am going to an evening organised by Anglia Flight on March 9th. It’s being held at the Aviators Bar, Hangar10, Gambling Close, Norwich.
They are having a video presentation featuring Moushold Airfield in the 1930’s and Meteors at Norwich in the Fifties, there is a nominal charge of £2 per head to cover costs.
It sounds like it’s going to be an excellent evening, anyone and everyone is welcome, for more info or to pre-book their phone numbers are 01603 301991, 01603 412888.

    Web address is http://www.anglia-flight.co.uk

    See you there….!!

Wonder what VOSA, the D of T, Road Safety Councils, Police etc would make of a ‘motorcycle’ or maybe groups of ‘motorcycles’ such as this in a town centre, on a busy saturday morning, at a busy set of traffic lights with milling pedestrians galore. I don’t suppose whirling propellor blades would come in to it…!!??
Also, I wonder if the ‘riders’ will qualify for AA/RAC membership — instead of fuses and fan belts, I guess the patrolmen will have to stock up on rotor blades and propellors……

    The mind boggles…………

    Yup, it’s terrible…

Was at Cambridge in the morning, whilst there a KLM DC10 took off on 05 when we were standing in the light aircraft park, couldn’t have been 200 metres away….

    😮

EGSH was the place to be today.
Formation flights for publicity shots, then formation aeros in clear sunshine at 5000′.
Will post pics if copyright allows.

    It’s a sh!tty job etc……….

    😉

It is as I feared. Not many pilots out there and those that are there would rather fight.

    Am I wrong?

    Yes you are..

I could be there and fly myself in, probably in close formation with DBW.

If my Stearman is out of restoration then that is the plane I would fly….

However, if the a/d is reduced in capacity it will, IMO, leave the a/d freeholders in the inviduous position of working out who gets to use the available slots. This will affect all users, not just HFC, as I do not believe the planning system allows particular users to be singled out, just the nature and frequency of use. In short, all users could be equally in the soup.

Correct Mr G, if the Council relents and supposing movements are set at 700 a year, I don’t think any aviation business could survive with just two movements a day. Maybe time should also be spent looking for an alternative base, if so then a good program of initial local consultation should be implemented, and continued with, so that the problem doesn’t get to such a heavy, complicated and costly stage. If this had been done at Monewden then one wouldn’t find oneself in this position.

I will copy my logs and forward them if it will help your cause..

    Correct Mr Mog….

compile records of as much movement as can be shown 1972-2004.

    sparse number of locals

    Neil G

I really don’t want to put a negative damper on things but the situation must be clarified.
I understand your frustrations Mr G, it’s always a travesty when airfields are threatened like this, however, as a former incumbent of Monewden, I feel qualified to add that yes, you can compile records of aircraft movements as you ask above, but HFC has only been there these past few years and, furthermore, until then we never ever had a problem with the locals..

You must be very careful with your other quote, the ‘sparse number of locals’ include some very influential and high powered, national and international figures from all walks of life. They cannot be underestimated..

Three movements a week was about the frequency of usage up until HFC moved in, I guess the locals would like to go back to that. A bit of consultation up front would have worked wonders but there was none..

On a more personal note — whilst based at Monewden, I (and my aircraft) was the recipient of a letter from somebody purporting to be from HFC stating that the locals had complained about excessive aircraft noise and that the main culprits were the larger engined aircraft such as the Stearman – I took exception to this as I had been based there a number of years and had never had a complaint about my aircraft, in addition my aircraft had been out of action for a number of months and hadn’t flown, it therefore, had made no noise at all!!
I then found out that Sunday movements had gone up from half a dozen (pre HFC) to 26 on one Sun morning — I’m no expert but I guess that’s where the complaints came from…. 😉 😉

Like I said, it’s sad to hear of an airfield under threat and I do sincerely wish you the very best of luck in your battle….

    🙂

Norwich is a horendously long journey for me, I am based at Filton or Staverton, why don’t we see who we have and where their home airfeilds are then come up with a suitable place for all, you won’t get that much further East on the UK mainland than Norwich, it’s not really “central” 😉

Yup – depends who goes I guess.. 🙂

You could try asking Norwich Aviation Centre, they would probably allow the use of their hangar exclusively free of charge. I know they hosted a private fly-in last year. their number is 01603 301991.

Much of a muchness for me – Leic/Abingdon/Norwich about equidistant for me.
But if my humble opinion be known I would go with DBW suggestion.
Am sure Dale and Andrea would be accommodating with discounted landings (International Airport with friendly ATC), and discounted food — how about it NAC??

Just out of interest why one with the free landing Mog? I’m always intrigued that PPL’s will pay a fortune to fly for an hour or more to say, North Weald, Headcorn or some such place for a ‘£200 burger’ but will cry foul when asked to pay between £5 and £8 at places like Norwich or a bit more at Southend for a landing fee. What do people moan about the difference between 2 hours aircraft rental or running costs (if privately owned) and the same plus £5?

I agree. Whereever such a gathering is likely to be held may be convenient for some and not others, if I have to fly distance to a forum fly in I’m not going to be worried whether I can get a free landing or not.

The situation could arise whereby a suitable airfield would be found, with a landing fee, as opposed to an airfield nearby offering a free landing — for me and my aircraft, the airfield with the free landing only has to be 5 mins extra flying time and that’s my £5 saving gone.

Personally I would be more interested in the type of airfield, facilities and reception/attitude of the people there.

As an aside, when refuelling, a half pence/litre difference would be + or – £12 on a tank full — for me that’s more of a consideration.

Besides – if we agreed on a certain airfield and could guarantee a particular number of aircraft then a discount could possibly be negotiated….

So, how about it chaps & chapettes?
See how many names we get then we can come up with a venue that’s central for all of us although I have to do my 300nm cross country for my CPL so personally distance is not an issue, I will rule out Scotland though 😉

    Names below 🙂

I’m definitely up for it Mr Deano if the Stearman is out of it’s resto.
I’m in East Anglia but am willing to travel..

I’m sure you will be very welcome, just ask to park at hangar 10, remember to book a training rate with ATC! Or give the club a call on 01603 301991 or 01603 412888 and get them to sort it for you. You can even pre-book your lunch so its ready when you arrive!

My sentiments entirely, can’t recommend it enough – can’t beat landing the Stearman there in between holiday jets!!
Andrea’s cooking is second to none, even if mine goes cold cos the bl**dy plane won’t start!!

Yep, he’s the only guy I know who got married, had a baby and filed for divorce in 10 months flat!

Are you going to the talk/video show on the opening of the first Norwich Airport on Mousehold in 1931 if they organise it? I can’t wait to see this video footage that has turned up, apparentely its the only footage of Mousehold aerodrome around.

Will it be open invite?? If so count me in – post the phone number here or PM me.

Video footage that “turns up” can be dodgy – as you well know

    Fnarr fnarr!!!
