What, like Engleberk Dumpertruck?:)
wow what saddens me is the idea of large groups of folks trampling over what could be a war gravesite
I agree with you Peter but in an area of the world where life is considered cheap
the lure of a fast buck probably outways the thought of a few old bones!
I hope with all my heart that the pilots remains are found and given the respect he deserves and a dignified funeral.

One hopes the nails are rust proof.
Nah I have sprayed them with WD40 and sharpened them for the first person who says “We had God on our side!”:D
We didn’t ‘take’ the moral high ground…..we ‘had’ the moral high ground!
Surely the important point of war is not ‘winning’ but to be on the side of ‘right’.
Therefore the Geneva Convention (or whatever) isn’t ‘tosh’ and wherever circumstances realistically allow wars should be fought within some sort of controlling guidelines.
The whole point of war is winning by whatever means at your disposal. It is a bl00dy nasty business, you fight for your Country the rest is up to the nice safe politicans(except Airey Neave DSO and a few others on a jolly at the Grand Hotel Brighton) Yes my war was “The Troubles”
Controlling Guidlines? You make it sound like it should be conducted like a Cricket match with a break for refreshments!
So if, as you seem to be suggesting, that in war the Geneva Convention was tosh, that means you accept that what the Nazi’s did, for instance, to the Jews was acceptable?
If the Geneva Convention was nothing more than tosh then why was the Geneva Convention used at the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials and at the International Military Tribunal for the Far East?

What the 3rd Reich did to the Jews and other sub humans(in their words) was Genocide.
Your last paragraph the easy answer to that was we won! Therfore we could take the moral high ground.

Looks rather like a BSA to me.

Merlin yes I do remember that thread. The Geneva convention is tosh in total war. We try and uphold it but in WW2 it went out the window once the SS Athenia was sunk. We fought for our lives during the Blitz on such places as London,Coventry,Liverpool,Bristol and I could go on and on. Our side destroyed Dresden which was of no military significance. British Civilian deaths were 67000 during the war.
In total war who cares about the Geneva convention? not many so one dead Nazi? good I could not care less. “Knights of the air” went out of the window in WW1. If you wanted to uphold the Geneva convention all bomber crews should have been held to account on both sides and hung along with their commanders. We won that war due to the selfless action of all allied forces and I take my hat of to them and their sacrifice for our today.
Fortunately we in Afghanistan uphold it and treat Taliban casualties with the best treatment available which is more than they would do to ours. So we have moved on but war is different these days.
Where was the Geneva Convention when 50 escapies from Stalag Luft 111 were murdered by the Gestapo?
The means justified the ends in my book

The Nazis entered this war under the rather childish delusion that they were going to bomb everyone else, and nobody was going to bomb them. At Rotterdam, London, Warsaw, and half a hundred other places, they put their rather naive theory into operation. They sowed the wind, and now they are going to reap the whirlwind.
Sir Arthur Harris.
I don’t have time to look up the Geneva convention up at the moment.(SWMBO has given me todays orders!)
What does it say about bombing non combatants?
I would have killed him without any qualms at all.It was total war. How long does it take to train a pilot against how long to build him another aircraft?
Lets add another dimension to this. You are flying along over Germany and see a train with red crosses all over it. Do you shoot it to bits or leave it be(unless it was firing back at you)?
I am in two minds over that one. I think I would destroy it otherwise the occupants could be patched up and returned to servce.
Leave it and its a drain on the enemy and their resorces attending to the wounded.
What do the rest of you think?
In view of all the fuss over who gets the P40.,have the Germans expressed any interest in claiming the Dornier?
