I like others on this forum have spent time in the armed services and many like me have seen unimaginable things caused by weapons and bombs and people trying to kill us. In my case it was civilians in Northern Ireland. I can’t speak for others but I doubt you will impress them one bit.

This is a serious question. I am not having a go at Americans but would like to have an answer to this.

Why do Americans feel the need to have automatic or semi automatic weapons such as AR15,AK47’s or similar?

I understand that if you have a handgun in your home or car and you are vast time/distance from law enforcement that is understandable.

I also understand the need for a shotgun or similar if you are a Farmer.

Defend yourself and your loved ones by all means but I can not see a case for taking a Kalashnikov on a picnic or to Wallmart.

I am not stupid enough to think this would stop all mass shootings with handguns but I feel that much tighter control of who they are sold to is also needed.

Please don’t throw the second amendment at me. I read it as this “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” What Millitia? and who is going to invade you? You have the most powerful armed forces in the world and you also have your National Guard who could and would destroy any invader within minutes of setting foot in your Country. I therefore think the second amendment is superfluous 250 years after being written I don’t think you will need another Paul Revere.

As a by the way in the UK if you are found with a firearm of any description without a licence it is a mandatory five year prison term. Since 1987 46 people have been killed in mass shootings. That is 46 to many.

Unfortunately John I agree with you. It is just a matter of time before one slips the net here. I see no way of stopping a truck in the hands of an unknown ISIS sympathiser slips under the radar here. I hope the good and law abiding Muslim community mention any concerns to the authorities and not bury their heads in the sand. That I fear would begin to start a backlash against them all.
