The pic is rather old, I beleive taken around in the 2003-2004 period. So it’s been flying with that radar. It was a time when there was so much discussion and competition to put a radar on the FC-1. There was contenders like Grifo S7, the RC-400, and Kopyo F. Nonetheless it appears that CAC installed a local KLJ type radar into the plane, and there should no surprise they did that. KANWA described the radar as a KLJ-10, though posters of the KLJ-6F or KLJ-7 both appeared in defense expos suggesting both are meant for export planes.

Also, the prices for making GaAs based products like the TR modules for the AESA is also dropping. Similar phenomenon with all digital products. When first introduced, prices are super high. Then, with mass production, volume prices drops like a stone.
10 years from now, you can’t use price as not a reason for using AESA.

Can’t remember if this is either the Sokol or Kopyo-F. I think this is latter. The Kopyo-F was a phase array based on the Kopyo-M. This seems familiar to me, and I think this is the picture of the display they had in the FC-1 exhibit in one airshow (Singapore I think).
crobatoAs well as what flex says, it can slew the beam faster than a mechanically scanned radar (but so can PESA radars), & because it has multiple transmit/receive modules, it can keep working with quite a lot of failed elements, though with reduced performance.
Being able to scan faster means nothing. That’s because you need the timed intervals between scans to be able to determine the speed and heading of the target.

The radar has problems and glitches, but that is typical when you pioneer the technology. The Japanese should have both the technical expertise and the money to fix it. But they didn’t.
The Japanese F-2 was so demonized by Japanese right wing politicians and the media that it became something of a humiliating symbol to the Japanese. It simply became politically dead and anyone budgeting for it gets some political repurcussion. The stigma meant it should be dead and left dead.
It would have been much better to start a new project, One that I think would make sense is to build more F-15s again, and this time fitted it with a new AESA radar of Japanese design, with all the lessons from the F-2 project but without the stigma.

crobatoToday’s Russian architectures are based on militarized COTS processors by Texas Instruments. Similar like those you will find in Playstation II.
Not too long ago I read of a Russian embedded processor project using RISC. Lost the page now, but it basically uses the MIPS license. As I understand the Playstation 2 also uses a MIPS processor. My understanding is that MIPS also contends with PowerPC as among the most used embedded RISC architectures there (there is also a Chinese project using the MIPS architecture.). The modular mission control computers used in the F-16 MLU uses MIPS chips, something like the ones used in the Playstation 1.
However parallely linking lots of slow CPUs to get more computational power is very complex subject, suffice to say it may not work always.
How much speed do you really want to get? Most of the computational intensive jobs has to do with signal processing, and you have the DSPs to do that. Much of a plane’s control systems are I/O bound and you really don’t need that much processing power.

That’s always on the assumption that the planes are detectable, and don’t do stuff like putting on RAM, using ECM and other countermeasures to reduce your radar efficiency, or don’t fly low or use terrain masking features.
It is always a mistake to assume that your foe will fight based on a “rule” book.
