    These are more likely the SU-30MK2/MKK2, and I think the number is either 24 (1 reg plus 4 training/evaluation aircraft) or 38-40 (two regs) . I tend to think more it’s 24 for now. But then, it can be 28—like the UBK reg in the 33rd, this could now be the standard size for a training reg.

    I think we have our Navy SU-30 reg here that we are anticipating, with an initial number of 12 planes.

    How was this data compiled? By the date of order? If so, maybe even though aircraft are not delivered the order counts in the year it was made. If so, then this may indicate a new order of MKKs.

    I think the article probably means they’re MK2/MKK2.

    $600 million for the delivery of 12 Su-30MKKs to China and four Su-30s to Vietnam,

    800 million for 10 MKI’s and 600 Million for 16 non-MKIs’. The MKI’s cost twice as much?

    It appears that way. The Vietnamese and Indonesian SU-30s are most probably of the SU-30MKK standard, e.g. of KnAAPO manufacture.

    Could KnAAPO’s data not be available making this incomplete?

    I think the article is lumping KnAAPO with Sukhoi as both are goverment owned. Irkut/IAIA is non government which is why it can issue stock.

    Makers of Sukhoi Lead Arms Exporters

    Reaping more than $2 billion in revenues last year, Sukhoi fighter jets maintained their position as the country’s top arms export item, according to a report to be released Monday.

    State-controlled Sukhoi tops the list of 20 defense companies that agreed to provide their 2003 financials to the Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies, a Moscow-based independent defense think tank that has compiled annual ratings since 1999.

    Despite the strong showing of Sukhoi, which capitalized on contracts with China, this year it is likely to be bumped from that spot by fighter manufacturer Irkut Corp., the authors of the report said.

    “The top five companies remained roughly the same and Sukhoi continued as No.1,” Konstantin Makiyenko, deputy head of CAST, said Friday.

    The companies, in descending order, are Sukhoi, tank maker Uralvagonzavod, Irkut, and aircraft engine makers Salyut and Ufa MPO.

    The MiG corporation dropped from No. 5 in 2002 to No. 14 in 2003.

    Both Sukhoi and Irkut manufacture Sukhoi fighters.

    Sukhoi reported $1.5 billion in revenues for last year, up from $1 billion in 2002.

    Privately managed Irkut ranked third, reporting $502 million in revenues, down from $528 million in 2002.

    But thanks to contracts with India, Irkut may well surpass Sukhoi as the No. 1 exporter this year, Makiyenko said.

    In 2004, Makiyenko said, Irkut can expect sales of approximately $800 million from deliveries of 10 Su-30MKIs to India.

    Irkut will also benefit when India begins assembly of 140 of the same jets under a $3.3 billion license agreement sealed in 2000.

    This month, Irkut, which is majority-owned by its management, will bring 20 percent of its shares to the MICEX and RTS exchanges in the first initial public offering by a defense firm.

    Next year it is aiming for a listing on the London Stock Exchange.

    Unless new contracts are signed, Sukhoi can look forward to earnings of about $600 million for the delivery of 12 Su-30MKKs to China and four Su-30s to Vietnam, Makiyenko said.

    Last year arms companies continued to depend on exports for the bulk of their earnings. For example, 95 percent of Sukhoi’s revenue came from sales abroad, the report said.

    The company delivered only five Su-27-SMs to the Russian Air Force last year.

    Yelena Sakhnova, an analyst with United Financial Group, agreed Irkut has a chance at coming in at No.1 this year, but estimates its earnings at $700 million.

    Sakhnova said that while both firms will sustain export volumes in the short term, there needs to be serious investment into the research and development of new-generation systems to provide for a continuous growth in sales.

    In a fourth straight record last year, Russia earned $5.4 billion from arms exports, but both Makiyenko and Sakhnova said they expect revenues to fall in 2004.

    Uralvagonzavod, which came in second in the CAST ranking, earned $749.7 million in 2003.

    This year it could drop out altogether, Makiyenko said, as the company has just completed a major delivery of tanks to India.

    Aircraft engine makers No.4 Salyut and No.5 Ufa MPO earned $420 million and $406 million, respectively.

    MiG, which dropped nine places to No. 14 in 2003, saw earnings fall from $281 million to $110 million.

    MiG delivered 25 MiG-29s, including to Myanmar and Yemen, in 2002, Makiyenko said, but exports last year were considerably smaller.

    Notoriously tight-lipped about exports, Tula-based Design Bureau of Instrument Building, or KBP, which makes anti-aircraft and anti-tank missile systems, for the first time agreed to provide information to CAST. It ranked No.7 with $250 million in sales.

    Apart from Sukhoi fighters, Russia is scheduled to deliver a third Project 1135.6 frigate to India.

    Two Project 636 diesel submarines will be delivered to China this year under a 2002 contract, Interfax quoted Vladimir Alexandrov, general director of Admiralteiskiye Verfi, as saying.

    After Russia and India in January finally signed a $1.5 billion deal on the Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier, no more contracts of such scale are expected, Makiyenko said.

    I deleted some pictures due to excess clutter, which is making hard.

    The T-98 was already “in service” when it was displayed in October 1999 in a surprise unveiling. It entered service the year before. There was a small quantity—around 18 tanks—in that initial parade, in complete battle gear and unit numbers.

    At the end of 2001, 40 T-98G—the second improved version with ERA and 1500hp engine—entered service in a try out basis.

    Chinese Type 98 tank fires laser-guided missile

    China’s new Type 98 main battle tank (MBT) can fire a laser-guided
    missile from its 125mm/50-cal smoothbore gun, China North Industries Corp has confirmed.

    This is understood to be identical to the Russian KBP Instrument
    Design Bureau 9K119 Reflecks (NATO reporting name: AT-11 ‘Sniper’) missile
    that has a maximum range of 5,000m.

    The Type 98 entered service with the People’s Liberation Army (PLA)
    in 1998 and was first seen in public the following year. It is understood
    that development of the Type 98 has continued and an improved version is
    expected to enter service soon.

    The missile is fitted with a high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) warhead that is claimed to penetrate up to 700mm of conventional steel armour. More recently, an improved tandem HEAT warhead has been developed by Russia to defeat MBTs fitted with explosive reactive armour.

    The ability to fire a 125mm laser-guided projectile enables targets
    to be engaged beyond the range of the 125mm smoothbore gun, which is fed by an automatic loader located below the turret. This first loads the 125mm projectile and then the semi-combustible charge. The automatic loader holds 22 rounds of ready-use ammunition.

    A Chinese-developed computerised fire-control system is installed and
    the commander and gunner have stabilised day/night sights that
    incorporate laser rangefinders to enable targets to be engaged while the Type 98 MBT is moving across country.

    In addition to an advanced passive armour package over the frontal
    arc that provides protection against HEAT and kinetic energy attack, the Type 98 has a number of advanced features to improve its combat survivability. These include an infra-red jammer and a laser dazzler device. The infra-red jammer is similar to the Russian Shtora system and has been designed to jam anti-tank guided missiles. This system only works over a limited arc, with the turret being traversed to the area of greatest threat. An active defence system is also provided.

    Mounted on the turret roof are a pole-type laser detector and a
    pedestal-mounted laser jamming device that is operated by the
    commander or gunner and can neutralise hostile optics by blinding the threat vehicle.

    Standard equipment for the Type 98 includes a nuclear, biological and
    chemical defence system, fire-detection and -suppression system, global positioning system, snorkel for deep fording and front-mounted dozer blade.

    Who says the C-803 is supersonic? Any article that says the C-803 is supersonic is wrong in that detail. The C-803 is a clear evolution of a subsonic missile; otherwise they won’t call it “803” for nothing after the subsonic 802 and 801. The turbojet and the blunt shape of the head is further proof of that. I believe some articles are confusing the C-803 with the supersonic ramjet YJ-12, which is already on advanced stages of testing and will be used on the 052C class destroyers when the destroyers are put into service soon.

    As for the actual range of the C-802, given the actual tracked range of a test C-803 vs. the advertised figures, yes that leaves some room for doubt as to the actual range of the C-802 in air launched form. Causing your enemy to vastly underestimate the actual range of a missile is a good way to put him into a trap.

    When the T-98 was first shown, it was indeed ready for service, albeit in limited numbers. It didn’t take long for the T-98 to appear in shots in various exercises.

    If it’s just for show, they would be showing the missile instead in a mockup where you can see the entire missile, not within a launcher, and not certainly in a battalion form. There is another picture inside a factory that shows C-803s being assembled, and this is based on a TV scan. I deleted files off my PC so I can’t find it right now, but it should be in the CDF.

    Huh? I didn’t see that ever mentioned in that report, and from what I gather the air launched version (Yakhont M) is only due for testing this year. It is only the ship launched version that was commissioned in September 23 of 2002.

    As for the C-802 and the C-803 weights, mockups of the C-803 in display next to C-802 indicates a very similarly sized missile—which is why it uses the same launch tubes. The two missiles are almost identical, which means all changes are only within, with a datalink antenna being visible with the C-803, indicating midcourse guidance, while the C-802 relies on inertial guidance in the midphase.

    As for the C-802’s “120km”, which is the advertised range, it’s probably as true as the C-803’s advertised range of “160km”, which as events have shown isn’t true. Those ranges are probably only low flight profile, ship to ship trajectories, and are not the air launched versions, which could greatly increase range. Note that the proposed air launched Uran was supposed to be 250km, when the base Uran is 135km.

    HY1 was a clone of the SS-N-2. The HY2 was physically longer than the HY1 by about 2 m (~7.? m vs the ~5.?m of the HY1) IIRC – and had about ~40 km more range than the HY1.

    HY-1 is the Silkworm. HY-2 is the Seersucker; I don’t remember the US/NATO applying Silkworm designation ever to the HY-1. The ones sent to Iran were HY-2s, but it was originally thought to be HY-1s.

    Only in a boat, but it’s not air launched as of yet since the air launched version is still in development.

    What kind of qualification is that? What’s the point of even asking what the ‘best’ air-launched anti-ship missile is if you’re going to constrain it to weight? I wasn’t aware the thread asked for “which anti-ship missile in the same weight class as C-803 is ‘the best'”.

    So is that your answer?

    The Iranians used Seersucker missiles which the press miscorrectly called ‘Silkworm’. These were similar to the Styx.

    In the mid nineties the Iranians tried to acquire C-802 missiles but the US called China to stop the shipments. However, it seems that a few C-802 managed to go through, and the Iranians were trying to reverse engineer the missile with the help of North Koreans.

    The Chinese HY-1/2 Silkworm is the Chinese cloned FSU SS-N-2 Styx.

    The C-801 may probably have Exocet connections but the dimensions and the aerodynamic configuration is different. It looks more like a smaller Harpoon. I think a fusion between Exocet and Harpoon best describes it. There are two versions of it, the earlier one with a range of 47km and the later ones with 80km. The newer version has foldable wings.

    The C-802 evolved from the C-801 and has turbojet rather than a rocket motor. The rocket booster is only for the ship to ship version. The air launched version does not have it, which is the same principle as the Harpoon or Exocet. Range is 120km. Most Chinese ships have upgraded to the C-802 from the C-801, while retaining the same launcher.

    The C-803 is not a secret since it’s already been displayed in TV and airshows. It’s official range is 160km as listed by factory posters in the airshows, but its true range appears to be a secret until it was tracked by US military intelligence firing off from a JH-7 with a recordable flight distance of 255km. It appears compatible to Bandstand fire control radar and Lightbulb data link (same radars used on the Sunburn) which is used on the 052B class destroyers. It uses the same squared launchers as the C-802/801.

    Chinese derivatives of the Styx include the Kraken (160-200km), which uses a turbojet instead of a rocket motor and is launched from an H-6 bomber. Designation is C-601/603 or YJ-61/63.

    C-701 is a coastal missile with a TV guided version and an infrared guided version. It may also be used like a Maverick against ground targets. This missile appears to be operational with navy Z-9 helicopters.

    C-101 and C-301 are attempts to create a large supersonic AshM, despite successful launching attempts, the missiles didn’t have the range, and interest shifted to the Sunburn instead.

    I’m sorry but there is very little information other than what’s been posted in the boards or shown in websites. Such projects are generally hush-hush. We only know they are working on one, possibly one will be chosen from two or three internal projects from competiting institutes but that’s as far as it goes.

    Also KAB-1500 are separate orders from the MKK2 and those had been previously ordered.
