I think “peace time” and “limited war” global power projection is on the cards – not as in a full blue water fight with USN in Atlantic, but as in China deploying frigates to global hotspots in support of her “allies”, and to make US led global “policing” harder. For example, if China sides with say Iran in a scenario where USN is leading multi-national blockade/intimidation patrols in Persian Gulf, PLAN now has the capability to deploy frigates to act as a buffer and inhibit US action through fear of political escalations. Not saying it will definitely happen that way, but Chinese politicians now have the capability to deploy a limited force far overseas and I think they’ll find it hard to resist as and when such an option appears beneficial, regardless of the strategy behind their procurement plans.

Even when they have the sticks, Chinese policy don’t seem to prefer or encourage the use of “big stick policy”. Remember, they take their page from the Art of War. Soft Power—money power—can be a lot more powerfully influential than Hard Power, and they have gobs of that, like the new sovereign fund.

Man, its so nasty of the Chinese government to LIMIT children from playing MMOs for more than 3 hours each day. We absolutely must demand our Divine Right to play World of Warcraft 24 hours each day. That is so abusive, we must invade China and change their gaming policies to save the two or three million World of Warcraft players in China, plus all the other millions that play those Korean games. And yes better wages and living conditions for the games “gold farmers”. In the meantime, we will force them to stop the banning of the Death Note manga from schools. After all if kids want the right to write their teacher’s name on the Death Note (meaning the name written upon will face an untimely death: watch the show in Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim) by all means they should be allowed.

3. Two things stand in the way of the Anti-Christ for total world domination. The first is the Prince of the Magog, otherwise known as the leader of the revived Soviet Empire.

4. The second is the “Kings of the East”. Probably the PRC, but it refers to the Kings in plural, and there are four Kings. That would be an alliance of four Eastern nations with an army of “200 million”.

In the middle of it all is a revived Israel that has somehow broken the Dome of the Rock to rebuild the old Temple of Jerusalem.

The war begins with the Revived Russian Empire striking down in a Blitzkrieg across Turkey to the Middle East.

The Eastern forces crosses the Tigris and Euphrates and dives across the Arabian Peninsula.

The Antichrist mobilizes the forces of the 10 nations/Revived Roman Empire into a crusade to Israel, where all three massive armies will face a showdown called Armageddon.

Yup, kind of wanting to pay a frigate’s price to do a cruiser’s job. The result is this mutant you call the modern warship.

As a note, the French call every ship a frigate, and describe Frigate classes with I, II and III. So for them a destroyer can be a frigate. It has something to do with history too. During the Age of Sail, the French innovated a single cannon decker ship that ran rings over its multiple decked opponents. That ship became known as the Frigate. So it had a strong meaning for them.

The Destroyer had a more modern origin as a ship meant to protect bigger ships against torpedo boats, hence, the Torpedo Boat Destroyer. Later it was just shortened to Destroyer, and extend to protect against subs and aircraft as well.

The Brits and the Japanese have a strong naval history centered around the Destroyer, so no wonder they preferred to keep its name. Ditto with the Australians. The USN had the traditional sailing frigates once, but modern history is dictated by its destroyers as well.

By their original meanings, a frigate is a scout ship, a destroyer a protective escort ship, and a cruiser, a high speed long range power projection ship.

So give it an F414 and support for Sparrow?
